Mark Holtze, in Germany it is also allowed to copy movies if you do it for private, but not in you break something like DRM or anticopy.
Wow a video that explained everything simply and to the point, no 10 minutes of BS.
Unlike your videos
Exactly what I was going to say, except hilarious too!! What wonderful memories!!
it costs money
Thank you,, really simple to understand đ
Straight to the point and that's what we need.
Wow you do not know how much this have helped. Im from Haiti, I escape the earthquake in 2010 and lost almost everything. My mom was a photographer and videographer and she brought all the VHS tapes of our lives with her here in the US and just had them sitting there in the drawer collecting dust. We watch them on christmas but thats it. Now I can watch them and show my friends Haiti before all the earthquakes and my life as kid đđđđ
Thatâs incredible! Sharing that will be quite the experience! Best of luck with it!
Thanks for this man, been wanting to get a VHS camera to mess around with and this is simpler than I thought it'd be!
Ya it's super easy, once you get the hang of whatever capture software that comes with it. I did a whole "vlogging with a 20 year old camera" to really test out the camera and the software. Been using it almost all the time ever since going through all of our old stuff. It's great and a nice way to modernize these old memories. Thanks for watching. EDIT: Shooting with VHS is dope, I have to say as a creative authenticity that's totally coming back in style ;)
Nice channel content by the way.
God... such nostalgia! I am 25 and my dad used to tape me and our family in the past. I still remember the sound the adapter is making, when you put the cassette. today's technology may be easier and so on, but they do not have the same charm like the technology before. much of it was built to stay for a long time.
Totally agree!
I have been a teacher att highschool in Sweden for decades and have just recently retired. I have tons of this stuff and itÂŽs all on high 8.
Sony Camcorder and high 8 whas state of the art at that time. The camera kept on running, in the 80:s and 90:s and so i have memories of my children, parents etc, but all the tapes have been just laying there.
But now i can digitize the tapes and show them for family and friends!
What is great padagogy?

And man u really want to teach us something here. "High five" U made it :)
Hi Peder, what a great message to find here thank you so much! I honestly feel pretty strongly about this as well as everything I talk about on my channel. It comes from a place of both experience (been working as a professional filmmaker for damn, 16 years now?) but also from a place of authenticity. I really do feel like sharing these old videos with people who haven't seen them really is something special.
It's not something I started to appreciate until I got older, but since kind of discovering it I felt it was an important element to share with anyone out there who may feel the same but doesn't have the knowledge or understanding how to do it.
Anyway thanks so much again, your comment made my day for sure! Wish you the best in your retirement. You can use some of that time to find some select moments on these tapes and share them with those who'd love to see them.
Best mate!

HOW MUCH MONEY DO YOU EARN ???đđđ YOU MUST BE RICH
Always store tapes horizontally otherwise they will get an oval sag and playback will suffer.
Awww, that last day of Hugh school snippet is so beautiful and fills me with nostalgia - which might be weird as I can't remember having been there with you. :D
Thanks for this video, just ordered one of those adapters to revive some childhood vacation videos that seem like from a different world...
Amazing how goofy the tapes looked when you captured the moment but 20,30,40 years later, they seemed priceless. Thanks for the vid.
Totally agree. My pleasure

THANK YOU! My parents have a lot of old home videos and too much hassle for them to dig them out and hook up a VCR and play them. I was looking into Legacy Box, and their prices are waaaaay too high. Especially now after seeing how this is done. You saved me bruh!
Ah! Please help. I got Sony VIDEO 8 old school handycam, i got one package of 3 RCA male composite cables and i got a composite AV to HDMI adapter- its not working. My computer isn't recognizing the HDMI or USB cable from the adapter to the PC- don't understand, any idea Mark!?
Very informative. I also liked watching your older clips.
Thanks Drew! It's so much fun to be able to capture and share this stuff with family and friends. People's reaction to seeing footage not seen in decades is pretty incredible and worth the effort IMHO. Thanks for the comment!
It's all about nostalgia. Times were so much "better and easier" than now. Thanks for the clear and fast instructions. My dad and I are going to keep ourselves busy with putting all our memories onto the computer.

@speedyboishan87 it looks fine; itâs SD remember so donât expect HD level resolution ;)
Excellent - simple, direct, understandable, most informative! Thanks! Tucker
Thank you for your video. It was well done and informative. I would like to confirm the Ion video to PC adaptor will work with my iMac? I want to capture the files directly to my computer or external USB hard drive. I will install the Ion capture software, then hook up the components, and via the supplied USB cable transfer the analog video to a digital format, correct? I am concerned the .avi files might be too large. Right now when I capture video 1 minute of SD video is over 200 megs per minute. Can I capture in a file format that would be smaller and not lose quality? Thank you for your help!!
I am not tech savvy..but your tutorial is truly awesome..even I can do it..save precious memories.. And money! So empowering! Thanks dude!

Thanks. I always wanted to do this with our home videos but didn't know how to get started. Thanks again for starting us off.

What sort of connector can I use for the AV outlet from my old JVC GR-AX10 camcorder. Nothing seems to fit?
If I can find my old home videos, i am so doing this. Thanks for sharing!!

You'll get better video quality if you use the S-Video port instead of the yellow RCA cable. Also, some of those video capture devices will change the way the colors look, and or save the footage in a lossy format.
Hi could you pls advise me I have an old hi8 tapes and want to convert to MacBook Pro 2020 not sure which adapters are best. I tried digit now adapter but it wasnât recognised when I plugged it into to USB port.

What file format did you set it up as do you know? You can change the codec. I would suggest using mpeg 4 or H.264 if possible.
I am wondering will this also work with the new macbooks that have a c-usb? I do have like a usb plugin but not sure if it will work
Thank you so much for such short and clear instructions.....will need to get an adapter and replacement RCA cable and then I am definitely going to give it a go even though I am 68 with zero technology knowledge. You can rest assure I will be revisiting your video.
Best of luck with it Patricia
Silly question I know, but how do you load the recordings from the tape In the camcorder to the software?
You have to make the connection. Load up the program, set your record destination. Hit record on the software and play on the VCR and it will record. I have a part 2 of this video which outlines that process. Check the link in the description. Shows the process. Hope that helps
Thank you so much man, one question I only have a yellow and black cord, will it still work with the adapter ? The black cord is the audio
Yes it will. You can plug it into either the white or red input and you will have audio. Mono single channel but thatâs all the camera has so shouldnât be a problem.
Thank you for the video. What adapter would you recommend that isn't too expensive but still does a good job?
Hi! Since the Ion video 2 pc came with a cd, and I have a mac book pro, do I need to purchase a external cd driver to read the cd and to open up the software it tells you to install?
So could this be done with a VHS player as well? Not just a camcorder? I've got some old full size VHS I want to save digitally.
Hi Lindsey, yes a VHS player works just the same. :)
I've been looking into several options Elgato or diamond video capture I've also considering just dumping everything to DVD and then ripping it. The only thing I get confused on is the installation of the software and how to set up codec and compression and video speed and all that good stuff
H.264 codec is most efficient with quality and space. Medium settings is fine for the most part.
Hi Mark, this is a very helpful video - thanks for posting! This might be a bit of an involved question: I have a couple of older Sony digital video camcorders. I like using the iMovie interface and I have a couple of iMacs including an older one currently running El Capitan and iMovie version 10.1.1. This version still recognizes the older Sony camcorders (iMovie on my newer iMac does not). I was thinking about finding an older MacBook Pro to be able to do the same thing and be more portable. Does it make sense to find an older MacBook Pro from, say, 2012 that might have the same version of the OS & iMovie? Or, if I find an old MacBook and it has the latest OS is it possible to wipe it and install an older OS? Or is all of this just overkill and should I just use a converter? I like being able to just plug the old camcorders directly into the computer with Firewire (which I believe will also give me the best possible transfer, correct?). If you have a chance, would love to hear your
thoughts. Thanks for your help!
Hey, I was wondering, I have a bunch of VHS C tapes but not the camera anymore. Can I insert the VHS C tapes into a VHS C adapter, then into the VHS reader then transfer it on a computer ? Or it can be done only with VHS regular tapes (like movies). If it's possible, what kind of adapter would I need to connect the VHS C adapter to the computer ?
How do you deinterlace the video on a mac. Your footage looks like it is still interlaced.
I usually run it through a deinterlace video filter in editing software. Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro or avid. I think QuickTime can do it and might be able to do it by selecting de-interlace but not sure. Not at home this week so canât check.
there may be a slight exception in relation to copy copyright content. At least here in England you can make a safe copy of copyrighted items provided you own the original and that is just for security/preservation reasons. There are VHS films that are not available in digital form, I am talking about rare items like for example 'Breakdance Sensation' which VHS original tape comes at 100 dollars on Ebay. In that case I would feel more safe if I had a digital copy on my mac in case the original VHS would loose too much quality or would be damaged accidentally.
Absolutely, I definitely didnât want to get into in this video, it was more just that FBI warning I remember at the beginning of every movie :). There is nothing preventing the transfer, just canât distribute it in any commercial way as far i remember.
Unauthorized duplication (to sell on the black market). I wanted digital copies of the ya altered Star Wars films where Darthâs Light saver is still a shade of red and not a pink tone from too much remastering :)
Thanks for the comment, I think you have the longest name on CZcams! I dig!

The Man In Red - Funk, Soul, Boogie e Hip Hop Square Dance callers are allowed to digitize records into mp3 and us it in that format only IF they keep the original record. (I know, honor system.)
Are those Video-8/Hi-8 tapes? If your computer has a FireWire or Thunderbolt port (most current Macs have at least one Thunderbolt port, but not many PCs do) you can get a Sony Digital8 camcorder from the early 2000s capable of playing back analog Video-8/Hi-8 recordings and capture them directly into Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro X or whatever via a DV transfer, hooking up the Digital8 camcorder to the FireWire or Thunderbolt port (for the latter, you'd need a FireWire-to-Thunderbolt adapter to pull it off.)
hi i have the ion video 2 pc I am playing my hi8 tapes on my camcorder and I hooked up the av cords from the camera to the ion and plugged the usb into the front of the pc. When i open the software and click on capture it lets me use my zoomcam and mic but i cannot get whats playing on the camcorder to show up to be captured.
Hey Mark! Any thoughts on whether it's better to play back (record) the video through the actual camcorder or through a VHS player using VHS cassette adaptor - from a quality standpoint?
I would go through the VCR personally if you can. Dedicated player vs a player/recorder (camera) but it wonât have an impact on quality directly. VCR might have cleaner play heads and better âtrackingâ options. Ultimately whatever is easiest for you :)

The ION adapter you mentioned is currently out of stock. Any others I could use? Just a generic AV to HDMI? Would that work with Ezcap?
hello! do you have any recommendations for a digital camcorder or one that records with tapes? any brands or model in particular?
Hey Mark, thanks for this very informative and well crafted video. I have a problem I was hoping you might be able to help me with.
No matter how hard I try I cant get rid of all the overlaid digital stamps my VHS c camcorder produces.
I have managed to turn off Date/Time, by changing the view mode to âSimpleâ in the settings section which takes off the majority of the stamps, however, during playback Time elapsed, âTBCâ ad âSPâ remain visible destroying the aesthetic quality of my recordings. As far as I can tell no settings on my camera allow these stamps to be turned off, so I am wondering if there is anyway outside of the camera that i could bypass these stamps? someone spoke online of using a VHS C adaptor. Is this feasible?
Thanks in advance for your time
Hi Dripfeed, my pleasure. Iâve come to a point where I feel we shouldnât leave these old formats dead in a closet. Too many important memories to share.
Sounds totally like itâs a camera issue. If you can change them on the fly like that then it must be. Given itâs just a digital overlay, the actual vhs-C tapes should be clean. That should make getting a VHS-C adapter the solution. I use a VHS-C adapter as the old signal from my camera doesnât play well with the adapter. You can find them on amazon pretty easily. Just make sure itâs a prime seller and read reviews. Lots of cheap knock offs out there made specifically to fleece people.
Hope that helps! Good luck! Let me know if the problem persists and weâll see what other options there are.
Mark Holtze thanks for the prompt response brother! I have invested in an Adaptor, will i also need a VHS player to then connect to my laptop? im not familiar with the outputs on the Adaptor
Anytime! Why I waste my time doing these videos is sharing info and the good vibes :)
Yes unfortunately now you will need a VHS player. The setup is pretty simple: VHS with rca composite cables (red, yellow, white). Cables plug into the VIDEo and AUDIO âOUTâ on the vhs and the other end to the video and audio IN on the adapter.
Adapter has a USB cable that plugs into your computer. Install and load software and capture. I have a part 2 where I outline the record settings setup. But thatâs a later step.
VHS decks: consignment stores, eBay, garage sales, parents basement? Seems that lots of people have VHS put away so ask around before going and buying one. Iâve sound the same with film projectors. People keep these things and forget they have them.
Good luck!

Great video. But one important tip you left out is that not all video output from a camera is the same in terms of quality. So on the camera you had in the video it seemed to also support S-Video it Super Video, and the adaptor you bought also seemed to support it. And since S-Video tends to be better than RCA it makes sense to try and use that method of video capture whenever possible. But note you will usually have to buy a separate S-Video cable to connect the camera to the adaptor.
I kept it to the simplest common denominator, but you're right. S-VIDEO, i figured if one can understand the basics of this they might already know about S-VIDEO, I also don't have a cable to I didn't think it was that helpful to demo what I don't have.
Great points though Jack.

Best is using fire wire or IEEE 1394 plug, 1:1 quality transfer, means no video quality lose.
IEEE is hard to find now days on new computers, everything is USB!
Fire wire is still fast , but the new USB3 , maybe 20% faster.
Not all cameras especially older VHSC cameras have Svideo. I couldnât find mine sonjust used what I had coupled with the lowest common denominator. SVIDEO is best, IEEE unless your camera has it. Those are late 90âs and early 2000âs era.
@@MarkHoltze My 8mm Sony camera from 2000 has IEEE plug, transfered a few tapes to my PC, video came out beautiful. But without compression (MPG4 etc...), I ended up with 30 Gig file/tape. LOL!

Lot of fun!
Looks like you're into video transfer, eh?
@Sannesthesia Long time ago done firewire transfer 8mm to PC, but needed a piece of software to download for windows to make things work.
"Like, federally bad."
The fbi can't stop me!

Hi :) the adapter you used in the video is like completely sold out everywhere and I canât find one đ do you know any alternatives? I have a Sony VX2000 and I wanna learn how to get the tapes onto my laptop but all the other adapter Iâve seen are confusing if they only work for certain VHS
Hey, hopefully you reply to this older video, but my vhs camera only has an av output and a âto pcâ (3.5mm fits) port. What cable would i have to get in my case and will it still work for me? Also, my macbook doesnât have a dvd drive. Thank you in advance!
how does one install the capture software ??? it didn't seem to be an option with the initial usb plug in pop up ...
BTW your editing skills are great! Awesome info, idk why I thought this was so difficult to do.
Could you tell me which camara is that, I have cassettes from 2007 but the camara broke
Hey Mark, couldn't find the exact model adapter you were using and clicked on the other adapters you recommend. Problem though...I have mac OS mojave 10.14.3 and from user comments it seems that most (all) of the adapters you recommend may not work for converting vhs, dvd's, etc. to digital files. I maybe missing something. Any help would be appreciated.
Is there an adapter that will work with the newest macbook pro? i have tried everything and nothing has worked
What kind of adapter do a need to transfer old Sanyo cassette from a video camera to a computer
I have a different capture device and I've connected everything successfully and can view the cassette tapes on my computer but the video plays well and clear through the video camera but on my computer the video is glitching a bit, any way to resolve this issue?
Hi Mark. I have an old VHS-C tape that I would like to convert to a digital file. I watched your videos and it seems like I need a working VHS which I do not. How else can I transfer the tape?
