  • The steering shafts in my 99 Jeep TJ have had it so I'm replacing them with a nice new set. I cover most of the details of this tedious but important repair as I go.

    I changed my heater core and evaporator core the other day, which required me to remove the steering column. I’ve been looking for a video somewhere to explain why I can’t get it back on to the shaft... 7:48 “You gotta wiggle the fuckin thing” really clears that up for me. Lol.
    That’s the only reason I watched, but great video man.

      Interesting you say that. I have an 04 and trouble finding the lower shaft. What brand did you end up getting?

    • @user-hx5yx7fs7c
      @user-hx5yx7fs7c Před 3 měsíci

      @@worldtraveler419 I ended up getting a Crown Automotive 5102531AA, and it would not fit on to the upper splines that go to the steering wheel. I already replaced the lower intermediate shaft with a Crown and the threads on the end at the steering gear box were horrible, felt like they were cross threaded. So, I never got the upper shaft installed, no idea why it would not go on.

    I got a steering shaft mount that has a 1 inch rise from Mountain Offroad Enterprises. Made the steering shaft angles better. I have a Tj with a 3 inch suspension lift and a 1.25 inch body lift. Made the steering better for sure.

    • @spacerag
      @spacerag  Před 6 lety

      Hey, that's cool! I didn't even know they made those. Having a body lift would definitely change the angle of the shaft relative to the steering box. A good thing to consider. Thanks for the comment!

      From the box to the steering wheel should the shaft be completely straight?

    • @spacerag
      @spacerag  Před 5 lety

      The main shaft should be straight but the ends flex on little u-joints. Depends how your steering column is tilted.

    Don't go through the grille. It's way easier to rotate the steering wheel 180 degrees and get the bolt out from the bottom. You ca also clock the wheel about 90 degrees to the right and remove the coupler bolt by the motor from underneath too. Once both bolts are removed, center the wheel and go nuts.

    Hey there . Video helpful but my lower steering shaft won’t compress to fit into the bracket. It appears that the end that goes to the steering box is seated correctly. What am I doing wrong?
    The old part compresses 5-6 inches. Should the new one compress!!??
    Thanks

    • @spacerag
      @spacerag  Před 4 lety

      The new one should compress too it just might be seized up or real stiff. If you can't force it to move, it might be bunk. I hope you get it!

    • @spacerag
      @spacerag  Před 4 lety

      Oh man I dunno. You could try squirting some penetrating oil on the joint. Maybe take it to the place you bought it and see if they have another one in stock to compare to. I don't remember mine being so troublesome.

    • @spacerag
      @spacerag  Před 4 lety +1

      The wiggle test I was doing at the begining would have yielded the same result after changing the shafts if my steering box was the problem. I cant say for 100% certainty that my steering box was fine, but I could tell the shafts were definitely worn. Thanks for watching. Good luck with yours!

    Was the steering noticeably tighter? No slop like in the beginning of the video?

    • @spacerag
      @spacerag  Před 5 lety +1

      That portion of the steering was much better. The little u-joints on the old steering shaft were very, very worn. Unfortunately I also needed to replace a lot of other worn components in the steering later. Things like tie-rod ends, ball joints, trackbars. Everything on this jeep is worn right out. So the steering did improve with the new shafts, but there were still more repairs to follow. Thanks for the comment and best of luck with your repair!
