  • THE JOY OF RV LIVING VASTLY OUTWEIGHS THE MANY TRAVEL RELATED STRESSES YOU WILL PERIODICALLY ENCOUNTER. YOU SIMPLY NEED TO MAINTAIN THE PROPER ATTITUDE AND WORK TOGETHER AS A TEAM WITH YOUR TRAVEL PARTNER. Join Sue & I as we discover we were about to have our tow vehicle DISCONNECT itself and fall out of our RV motorhomes hitch receiver! Apparently one of the safety chain hooks articulated in such a way that it "nut cracked" and snapped off the locking collar on the pin!
    Later in the trip, we show what some of the other issues are while riding thru a few toll booths. We did not knowing if our transponder would work properly because it was in our tow vehicle AND NOT in the motorhome. We discuss past issues we had traveling in areas where we DID NOT have a transponder. This makes the tolls much higher because your vehicle license plate is photographed, and they have to bill you via US mail. Sometimes these bills would take 6 months to reach us!
    I talk a little bit about our new "Open Roads "Freedom Pass" Transponder that we have changed to that is good in 26 states and 5 states pending! We show you what this thing looks like, and where you can get it. It is a natural extension of the awesome TSD Logistics Discount Diesel Fuel card program. Your toll charges will automatically be paid for by the banking data you already have set up with them for the Fuel Buying Program!

    When parked or unhooked it is a good idea to have a locking pin to protect from theft . I will not use one while actually towing either a toad or trailer as it is almost impossible to get the vehicles apart quickly in an emergency situation. I helped separate a burning flatbed trailer with construction trash just by pulling the clip and pin and the guy pulling forward.

    • @OurJourneyInMyles
      @OurJourneyInMyles  Před 2 lety

      In a fire, we will have to pull the two pins that attach the tow bar to the car. Trust me,.....I will only work so hard at this,..........

    Consider heavy duty carabiners in hitch frame and attach safety cables to the carabiners. Eliminates those large hooks interfering with hitch pin.

    I watched your video on the broken tow bar pin lock and went out and checked mine the next morning .. It was fine !!! But... Thanks for the reminder !!! However several years ago someone did steal my receiver !!! So it can happen ... My bet is someone tried to get yours . I understand with the right tool someone can pop the lock off those pins but the pressure on your pin kept them from removing it !! Keep up the good work !! RC

    @rollingeezer Před 2 lety +2

    Love your videos! One comment I have to make regards people that believe they don't need an auxiliary braking system. I'm an engineer like you and one of the principles we learn about early on is Newtons Laws. Simplistically if you're decelerating, on average the force being applied to your hitch is 2.7 times the weight of your toad. So if your toad is 4,800 pounds, the force being applied to your tow bar and hitch is 12,960 lbs. If your hitch or your tow bar isn't rated for that kind of force then you'll have a real problem. More often than not this kind of force isn't applied if your easing to a stop but if you have to make a quick stop this will have devasting results.

    • @OurJourneyInMyles
      @OurJourneyInMyles  Před 2 lety +2

      I agree with you 2.7 times John! Always buy over the rating you think you will need to have some safety margin.

  • @davidwalton6877
    @davidwalton6877 Před 2 lety

    Mark, you should consider buying a hitch pin with a lock AND a pin - belts and suspenders😁

  • @rjw8316
    @rjw8316 Před 2 lety

    Mark, I can't tell you how scary your video was concerning the missing hitch pin lock. I agree with you that if not detected the pin could have worked its way out and dumped your hitch with car on the ground. Perhaps the cables would have held the van from becoming detached but I can imagine all kinds of damage done. From one engineer to another I enjoy your methodical thinking. After watching your video I was considering if drilling a hole in the pin between the lock and the receiver tube to install an additional cotter pin or such to provide some redundancy would be something to think about?

    I've had the exact same issue with those lock pin devices. I don't trust them. Our Wanderlodge has the receiver pin located under the coach in front of the rear bumper. I do exactly what you did and push the clip further into the head. If someone wants to steal my tow bar they have to crawl up under the coach to remove the pin. So far so good.
    Thanks for the heads up on the Freedom Pass with Open Roads. We use the TSD card for fuel stops. Seems like a good way to coordinate toll roads. Really appreciate your channel Mark and Sue. Thanks again from a long time subscriber.

    The evidence looks pretty convincing to me that those safety chain hooks leveraged the end of that lock right off. You could see that kind of force turning a tight corner with both pieces positioned just so. If a person was trying to steel the tow bar they already had the lock off so why did they leave the tow bar behind. Good practice to look everything over before departure
