Vocal agility is the ability to perform fast phrasing in a clear and articulated manner. The more our instrument is flexible, the more we are able to maintain a precise and balanced sound even during rapid and articulate passages. However, agility is not just a mere technicality, it is also the basis of a good emission free from effort and constraints that risk making it fixed and heavy. The more flexible and agile we are, the more our voice will move smoothly between the various registers, managing the dynamics over the entire range very well. In this way we also improve our vocal expressiveness.
How to train agility? It is simply an athletic gesture, like all singing activity, and therefore he trains by singing and practicing with different exercises.
There are singers who make vocal agility their strong point (in the video I report various examples), producing very complex and articulated phrases that we could call melisms (or in English "riffs and runs").
However, here I would not like to go into too advanced techniques, but I would start from the base, and then gradually increase the difficulty. If you are interested in more advanced and complex exercises, let me know in the comments!
Exercise 1: to begin, we start from a simple major scale, stopping at the fifth and then go back, and at first we slowly try to articulate every single note with all the vowels. We can help with a consonant to give the first attack to the sound (I recommend the "m" or "n" to soften the attack), or we can start directly with the vowel being careful to make a soft attack. We slightly accentuate all the notes so that they are clear and precise, as if they were the frames of a film viewed in slow motion. Then we gradually speed up trying to maintain this clarity in the scanning of the various notes. If we feel we are losing notes or dragging them in an unmarked way, we go back to slowing down again until we feel safe.
Exercise 2: always starting slowly and then faster, scoring every single note as in the previous exercise, we can start intoning more complex phrases, such as those you can find in various exercise books. For example, I sometimes take inspiration from Antonio Juvarra's book "Lo study del canto". Although it is a text with a strong classical imprint, I find that many exercises and notions reported are also very useful for modern singing. In the video you will find some examples of exercises that I like to apply with my students.
On each of these exercises we move up the key as we like until we feel comfortable. The more we increase the speed, the more the difficulty in maintaining good agility and precision will be greater.
It is up to us to try to push ourselves beyond our limits!
