That battle wasnât a defeat by the Christians alone. The Ottomans disengaged as well and the battle was not for nothing. The Christian army despite their withdrawal accomplished their goal which was dislodging their enemies from the fortified town.
You may sound British, but youâre definitely a pro-Muslim person based on your biases. Didnât you just say in the earlier part that these Ottomans murdered the people they captured? Why are you partial to these murderers?
This is absolutely wild. A perfect storm of events that led a sure victory to a humiliating defeat, but the Ottomans didn't have any way of taking advantage of it and everyone who left the battlefield did so without getting anything out of it.

@@rkitchen1967 totally opposite is true. Janissary unit was among the first if not THE first uniformal, professional infantry in Europe. They had far superior training where as only the Elite of european army aka the knights and squires (man at arms) were highly trained. Otherwise the regular units got basic training. Check your facts.

Dunno why you'd call it the "austrian" empire, cause it's the holy roman empire. The "austrians" were on the throne for the longest time with the dynasty of habsburg, but they initially come from swabia, and built a fortress on swiss land called habsburg. I dunno how that makes it the "austrian" empire.

History shows us this same lesson time and time again: an army more concerned with loot looses cohesion and then their lives.

We only know that the crossing was the wrong decision with the benefit of hindsight. After they routed the Ottomans so effectively, there was a strong case to press the advantage. Also after disasters everyone likes pointing fingers, so after military defeats the sources often contradict themselves, so I would be very careful with these narratives. Also yes looting is disasterous to army cohesion, that was proven many times over.
He had NOT until the faulty report of Mehmed abandoning his camp arrived. He was like the only sensible commander and he tried to do it well till the end, but other than him, it does seem like an incompetence contest.
And also his cavalry contingent was the ONLY one that managed to form up in battle order in time, else the allied army wouldn't have even reached to the Ottoman camp.
What I remembered of Genghis khan new and revised army was that no man should loot during or after battle. But I'd imagine a commander would need to be extremely charismatic to instill such discipline.

I watched this war without knowing the outcome, I thought throughout the video that it was a war we were defeated. In the end, the opposite happened. It made me proud of my ancestors once again. THEN I read about this war from my own Turkish sources. This war is actually a war won by the backward service; lumberjacks, tent makers, butlers, camelmakers and cooks start attacking the enemy with their picks, wood splitters, axes, scythes, cauldrons and ladles. His order was broken when the crusader army joined the plunder and this sudden attack caused panic. After the retreat of the enemy, the raiders and janissaries began to attack the Crusader army again and the balance was disturbed. This battle is also known in the literature as the "Battle of the Bucket and the Cauldron", as the rear guards contributed to the victory of this battle...

Battle of Keresztes series are such roller coaster to watch. Every time it seems like Ottoman is losing various engagements, but they somehow won again, sometime their units are incompetent, janissary come to save the day. It is such a great series

ottomans were too behind in military technology and ideas, their army also usually consisted of volunteers who were there to take part in plunder

I have never seen a well-organised plan fall apart so quickly... truly they snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.
In Turkish public memory, this battle is mentioned as "pots and pans warfare", as the support of the non combatant units such as cooks, grooms, stable boys etc. was very significant in turning the tide. They picked what arms they could find and fought the looters. Seeing the ferocity of these non combatant units, The Jannissaries were riled up and joined the fray. At least, this is how the Turkish narrative goes, I believe there is some truth in it, as a country would not want to attribute victory to insignificant non combatant units rather than their elite troops, i don't see any advantage in that.
Actually there is as dis will make it seem that the highly trained warriors of christian west was defeated by cooks and chefs that would be a great boost to muslim morale and a very good propaganda.

And when the cooks attacked there was a small confusion in Christian army, at the same time one Cook shouted that the enemy was defeated so that the some of the Turkish cavalry turned back and found the enemy looting the camp.

Further the historians mentioned this battle as a defeat because considering the money that spent and the effort to preparing the campaign wasn't really feasible in any way

Can't say I've ever heard of an army trapped in it's own camp rallying and forcing the enemy off the field, usually by the time a camp is being looted the occupants have already fled.

22:17 Great Video. Whilst it is true that this Battle was the last great victory on the battlefield for the Ottomans in Central Europe, it would be misleading to think that this meant the status quo remained the same until the war of the holy league in 1683.
Rather, as discussed by historians such as Professor Gabor Agoston, warfare in Central Europe and Hungary transitioned to skirmishes and sieges of massive fortresses as opposed to large scale battlefield engagements.
Professor George B Michels in his recent book âThe Habsburg Empire under siege,â notes how during the mid 17th century, under the revived leadership of Grand Vizier Ahmed Korprulu, the political stalemate was effectively reversed by the mid 1670s, with the Austrians lacking the money or manpower to put up even token resistance towards the large scale Hungarian defections to the Vizier of Buda and the ottoman conquest of Habsburg border fortresses. Noting that a full Ottoman vassalization of the Slovakian, West Hungarian and Croatian captaincies was prevented purely by the intervention of an international coalition during the 1680s.

It seems Muslim armies in general, especially during the early stages of Rashidun Caliphate, have this high fighting morale, when being cornered. The same can be said about early Crusaders. Religious zeal really helps. It's interesting to see how in battles inflicting loses is secondary to crashing enemy morale.
In this case, though, I think the Christians exceeded the Ottomans in religious zeal
The Ottomans at this time were decadent and unorganized, knowing full well that when defeated, they could always ride back to cushy Constantinople

Amazing Video! I think this is a perfect example of the difference between an medieval army (composed of multiple factions and leaders) and professional armies (roman and post-medieval) lead by generals with clear hierarchy.

"Last Great Victory" under an Ottoman Sultan, the Koprulu family of Grand Viziers would return with even greater victories.
These great empires basically exhausted all their resources and fought each other to a standstill as neither side was really able to make any gains. In that way it was probably for the better.

I wouldn't say it was ultimately for nothing. Because of this victory, the ottomans probably still retained a certain strong image to their adversaries as strong and have military capabilities that can still rival theirs for now

Time after time we see ancient commanders making foolish decisions like this. Another common mistake is the feigned retreat! It makes you wonder how much control leaders really had over these ancient armies, especially with feigned retreats when the "King/Commander" expressly warned their men against this, and their men did it anyway!

This battle remind me of one of my battle in Empire total war, basically the enemy (Marathas) trying to assault my fort using superior melee attacks but unsuccessful. So when i saw they were routing on masses i fixed bayonet all my troops and charge them head on. My units are all scattered and the remaining unbroken enemies began to pick my unit one by one, they even get to kill my general, luckily i could withdraw all of my troops back to the fort and this time attacking them with more cohesion, the battle is won but a very close one. This is an important example of keeping your unit cohesion even if your enemy are routing
This is probably the greatest comeback of all time

I blame the innefectiveness of Maximilian. He tried sure, but overall if he had slowed down his men and been more meticolous in his approach, this would have been a great victory
