I've got an old 7 mil shaft that got bad corrosion on it, bought a new one but thinking if there's a good way to clean it so I'll have one extra

Not really, the only way is to take off the bard, sand and polish back to bare steal then take it into an electroplating business who do electroplating in zinc. Once re-plated, re-install the barb.
