Yeah looks like someone was killed, raised as a Death Knight but the Lich King forgot to give him the armor upgrade pack.
Man the reds on the splash art pop so well and then the in game model appears in which they’re just so desaturated and dark. It definitely doesn’t fix how much it looks like standard fantasy nonsense but at least it would look better
Yeah, this is definitely a case of the splash art being miles better than the actual skin.

If I remember correctly, this was a free skin, along with one of Tristana and Alistar. I think they were given for following Riot on different social medias. I have all three but we are talking about 2009/2010

Dreadknight is indeed the one they gave for free for a while. Sanguine was also free for a while, and is definitely MUCH worse than dreadknight imo
Dreadknight was given for free if you retweeted a tweet from Riot. It is my first Garen skin, and I created a Twitter account exclusively for this
I actually got them by requesting it to the support and somehow they ended up giving it to me. It was 2018.
Edit: yeah i literally emailed support "hey i followed the twitter but cant find the code for the skin". They then went to add it to my inventory

Dread Knight Garen looks like he's hanging out at that one flight point in Zul'Drak and repairs your gear and is trying to sell a level 28 white quality two-handed sword to players around level 76 that nobody in the history of the game has ever equipped outside of maybe 3 people who bought it for a roleplaying set.
As someone who enjoys creating and drawing my own characters, nothing scares me most as the phrase "it looks like an NPC" that's evil hahaha
Don't forget this skin used to be free, alongside Riot Girl Tristana and Unchained Alistar, both of which also just used to be Chromas before Chromas were a thing

no, that is an attempt to make something similar to Arthas from warcraft 3 times. Remember that when league and this skin got released, WoW wasn't that much popular yet and warcraft franchise was mostly known from warcraft RTS games
yeah was expecting this to be the pick, if not this then the Sanguine Garen. That skin is just a legit Chroma
well, most of the really old skins look like this. Just look at Ashe from freljord or Sherwood Ashe
He looks like the mid-dungeon bossfight in an optional no-quests lv70-90 dungeon(in an RPG that goes up to lv 120), which also appears in later areas as mini-bosses.

The Skin was reworked on wild rift and it ain't bad.
I feel Sanguine Garen could also been his worst Skin but at least Riot had the decency to lock that thing in the legacy vault.
I think I own that thing, but I am genuinely not even sure, because I also own some actual skins of his (loot system be praised).
Counter point though, Sanquine Garen at least hold some interesting visual detail, he looks like a vampire, and the fully red armor is more interesting to look at than the very boring greys of Dread Knight. Sanguine has aged pretty badly, but I’d say it at least fulfills it’s niche of being a sort of red-evil looking Garen. Dread Knight on the other hand just kinda… fails to be intimidating or interesting. I’m pretty sure I’ve killed fifty dudes who looked like Dread Garen in the last MMO I played
But even with those caveats and my bias (it was the first skin I ever got), I gotta admit… Sanguine still isn’t a great skin
It makes sense that Garen looks like an NPC because lbr, he basically is one.
This makes me realize how cool it was to have a skin back in the day, because you could only get them by spending money, so if someone had a skin you knew they had it because they love that skin/champion so much they paid for the skin. So to me the free skins were awesome, especially Unchained Alistar.

As a long time Garen player, I think this skin gets two specific points in it's favor: being free for many years, and actually changing the shape of his sword.
Compare to Sanguine which is literally just Garen again but ALL RED and with a very similar sword shape, which I think edges this one out as the worst.
Also, Garen's Sanguine Blade is his original blade before the visual update
when you get dunked on by the enemy garen and his npc energy.
I got this thing from when they retired the free skins they used to give. I got Riot Girl Tristana, Unchained Alistar and Sanguine Garen (another lame skin of his). When they announced they would stop having them available they temporarily set up a bot that would give them to you if you asked. I asked the bot for the skins just because, and instead of Sanguine, that I already owned, it gave me this one 😅 (Apparently it had been free too, before they changed the gift to Sanguine. So I ended up getting both).

Kind of funny how we explored God King Garen earlier and how he was seen as an “antagonistic character” of sorts. And then when we look at this skin, it just feels so generic.
Even if we take out the parts of the higher cost and quality, dread knight isn’t really doing much to sell the idea other than “what if Garen, but evil?” And that leaves a lot to be desired if we have little else to work with.
Hell, I thought this was Darius when I saw the thumbnail that I forgot we were still exploring Garen’s skins.

But yeah seeing this and knowing Dreadknight Nasus (which used to be my favorite skin for Nasus before I got Lunar Guardian and then eventually Space Groove). Both Dreadknight skins could really use an update.
A friend of mine made an offhand comment saying that DK Garen would have his head crushed attempting a jumping jack. I laugh everytime i see this skin now.

My biggest gripe with this is that "Dread Knight" Garen still has all the holy-light-paladin-looking yellow VFX, which honestly just made me feel scammed when I bought this as one of my first skins ever.
I love the splash art tbh, that glare on a character that's traditionally very noble and blindly honorable is really cool to me, even if it is an elseworld skin.

I remember the first time someone had this skin my first thought after watching the splash art was "ah yes, my favorite skin: Darius Garen"

Back in the early days, when i saw this skin, i got so giddy on buying it because he looks badass! But the ingame model makes him...alot smaller than i expected and it just look so dull, i atleast expected a sword burning with blue fire when he Q or E.
I think they updated this skin on wild rift to make him look more pale and a bit armoured. i dont remember clearly tho as I haven't touched garen's WR skins in a while

I always hate how they fuck with the colors on splasharts vs actual skins. The splash art for this suggests a vibrant but chilly appearance but the actual skin is as drab as a dead tree, and that’s an injustice to dead trees. Same goes for skins like nightbringer yasuo and aatrox’s blood moon skin
To be honest, Arthas without helmet looks pretty scary tho. Especially if you are a normal human who never seen monstrous shit irl. Especially for ones, who knew Arthas before he became death knight. He looks like straight up dead and frozen man. I would be scared af, if I saw him approaching me💀

I mean, Dread Knight Garen already had a Rework in Wildrift. Different Splash Art, Slight Effects, and updated model. Check it out if you have the time because it's kinda decent.

Blizzard also understood that you can do more with less when it came to designing arthas.
His look when he is a death knight (before putting on the Helm of domination) is kinda freaky, even if he is just gaunt, with white hair and bags under his eyes.

The splash art looked nice, but for SOME REASON they decided to reverse the vibrancy between the armour and the skin on the model, making him look like a healthy boy in a grey armour which... looks worse than if they kept the greyish skin and eyes and the vibrant red accents on the armour.
Of course it doesn't fix the WoW shape language, but damn did they miss the mark.
I didn't have to pay anything for this one, I got it back when this, Riot Tristana, and Unchained Alistar (the first one I ever got) were free promos. Best chroma I could ask for.

dread knight Garen was an attempt to make a skin similar to Arthas menethil after he took frostmourne and became evil, but before he became lich king. This part of his life is shown to players in warcraft 3 reign of chaos and warcraft 3 the frozen throne campiagns. But still, they could have make a better job

On the pricing topic, I feel like league should increase the number of skins that go on sale every week... since there are SO many more champions and skins nowadays it's hard to find even a skin for your champion pool on sale.
Yes I understand the personalized shop discounts exist but it's still lackluster.

When I was a kid, I made a twitter account to get this skin for free. It was the lesser known. And not nearly as rare promotional skin (unchained Alistar and riot girl trist were CZcams and Facebook promotions, they ended up being limited though).
