  • What was flying a Pan Am B747 in the 1970s like?
In Los Angeles, you can re-live the magic of flying onboard a luxurious Pan Am B747 at Air Hollywood.
I arrived at the 1970 airport terminal to check in on my Pan Am Experience Flight. Retro dressed Pan Am stewardesses offered cocktails, prop cigarettes and magazines. They served classic dishes such as caviar and chateaubriand exactly what Pan Am served back in the 70s. The menus, seat covers and china served were all original Pan Am items.
During the flight, there are fashion shows with flight attendants dressed in all the Pan Am uniforms from over the years and assorted international airlines uniform. It was great retro fun and the memories will linger in my mind for a long time to come!

I imagine it'd probably be the same as it is now on cruises and planes. Planes usually have trays that keep everything together, reducing the risk of everything spilling all over the place. Cruises are a little more messy with having to just hold on to plates and drinks so it won't fall off the table. It's pretty much the same now and in the past, but with less glass and fragile material and more plastic.
TL;DR: Trays and/or passengers just having to manually keep their food and drinks on the table.

@@IVANGEBER Well, my first flight from AMS to CGK was in jan 1975. I was 1 year and 11 months old back then. I have a picture of me at the gate at Schiphol airport back then, showing a Garuda DC-10 (note from my already deceased dad says "schiphol vertrek" (in English: Schiphol departure)). I cannot recreate memories from back then myself, and my mom gives contradictory answers.
So my answer to your question is my first flight is from AMS to GCK by Garuda on a DC-10. Not the Queen of the Sky unfortunately. Not 100% sure, sorry. But I do have a picture of me and my sister in an aeroplane, with a 3-4-3 conficuration in 1983. I am sure that was SQ and back then, that must have been a 747-2xx.

My first flight ever was on Pan Am back in 1970. i was ten years old and flew to Los Angeles. My parents had to buy me a suit for the trip, I vividly remember the experience, the food, the flight attendants and everyone was dressed to kill. Shortly after I graduated from university in 1980, I took my first airplane flight from Singapore to Hong Kong to visit my relatives and it was on Pam Am. When it was time to serve tea and coffee, a flight stewardess came around carrying a teapot in one hand and a coffee pot in the other. She was wearing an apron with 2 pockets, one filled with sugar and the other with creamer. After she filled our cups with tea or coffee, we had to dip our hands into her apron pocket to get the sugar or creamer. As that was my first ever airplane flight, I thought that was the service norm on airplanes until I took a flight on Singapore Airlines a few years later and was spoilt with excellent service from the cabin crew.

looks fun! This is exactly the kind of thing I would dream of building when I was a kid. It is possible to further improve the experience with not very complicated additions that will give a slightly more realistic feeling in the cabin or during boarding. The most missing thing in my opinion is to put a hidden sound system near that sheet with the 747 printed on it, that plays a sound track of the very symbolic sound of the auxiliary power unit of the 747. That ever so memorable high-pitched whistle that was so exciting when you got on a flight in a 747. Even inside the cabin, I think there is room to add a subtle sound effect of the buzz of the electrical system, maybe along with some typical background music "of airlines", maybe to find the original boarding music that was played on Pan Am. Also, during the meal I would play the sound of the rumble noise from the drag during the "flight" ". Even just one of these ideas would greatly enhance the sense of conviction that the visitors are actually in flight and not just dining in an aviation museum showroom or in a still factory mock-up. I can think of other things like some sort of symbolic visual effect in the windows that looks more or less like clouds moving by maybe with something with some GOBO light or something along those lines (not necessarily with screens like in a simulator). If only I could afford to build a project similar to this... 🙂

I actually flew Pan Am a few times, the most memorable was a 747 from San Francisco to New York (Kennedy) in 1989.
The 70’s and 80’s were an interesting time in air travel. I can remember some of the now gone airlines I flew on, like Eastern, Allegheny, Northwest Orient, Piedmont, TWA, Republic, Continental, National and of course, Pan Am. Air travel was heavily regulated so airlines could make money flying lightly traveled routes. Even so, airlines went out of business. Sometimes, severe mismanagement was to blame. Other times, accidents and terrorism were key factors. After the Pan Am 103 bombing over Scotland, the airline was doomed. It was such a shock for Americans to see a bombed U.S. airliner. Eventually Pan Am and TWA sold off their profitable and prestigious New York - London Heathrow routes to United and American. By then, the end was in sight.

Bookings were done at a travel agency, who issued those paper tickets which had several tear-off copies. Boarding passes were proper card with a tear off portion, which are sometimes still issued today, but much less often. No security queues, only passport control and customs. Leg room was much better in economy than it is now, but watching the movie was troublesome since there was, if my memory serves me correctly, only one screen per cabin and sound from the headphones was very tinny. It was much more of an occasion flying then, unfortunately Pan Am never recovered from the Lockerbie disaster in December 1988. Tragic.
