  • Originally from Newcastle, England, and formed in 1974, Raven has been jumping around on stage since before it was cool. Widely considered to be an early influence on thrash metal, Raven took that energy and speed and combined it with catchy hooks, compelling songwriting, and creative guitar solos. While their early albums are absolutely required listening for anyone into fast melodic metal, Raven is still putting out heavy, catchy albums today. If you're unfamiliar with these often overlooked NWOBHM legends, buckle in and get ready to rock until you drop as we delve into their history and awesome albums.

I saw Raven on the "Stay Hard" tour when they came to Dallas. John was already using the wireless headset. During a bass solo he disappeared off the stage but kept playing and singing/talking/yelling into the mic. All of the sudden everybody turned around and looked to the back of the venue. He had made his way all the way to the nosebleed section, found a small kid up there, picked him up and brought him down to the lower level all while still one-handing the bass and singing. It was greatness.

I was too young to attend but some older friends of mine went and although they felt that their outfits were totally ridiculous, they said they did well. Back in the '80s, you really had to kick ass for anyone to slightly like you when you opened for a huge band like Judas Priest. Too bad I missed out.

I can't say I'm their oldest fan, but I'm one of them. I saw them at the Brooklyn Zoo when they first came to the US. it was insane. John had that explorer bass with the trem. His solo blew my mind. I think he's much better than Billy Sheehan and I LOVE Billy. Any time they played in NYC I was there. The L'amour shows were always a blast. I was at the Roseland show where Anthrax and Metallica opened for THEM! Live at the inferno is one of the greatest live albums ever recorded and it still is in the CD holder in my car. . I'm surprised it was omitted here. People shit all over Pack is back but it was almost like a prog album at times. Was it the right album at the time? Absolutely not! But still a great album. I lost contact with them in the 90's because I was in the Army and doing other things. The next time I saw them was at the L'amour in Staten Island. There were maybe 30 people there but they played like they were playing a stadium. I got to hang out with them back stage for a few minutes and I was totally awe struck. I didn't see them again until they were playing at the Vets club in Oneida NY on the Extermination tour. Once again for a small audience, but it mean't the world to me. I got to hang out with them for a little while afterward. Mark is truly an inspirational guy, coming back after a tragic, almosr career ending accident. John is one of my all time heros but they are the most humble guys when you meet them. Real gentlemen. They played Brooklyn last week but I couldn't go because I was away on a job. I'm glad to see them keep going. As far as home work with this band, it's been done for 40 years. The single for crazy world got me hooked. Their first 4 albums didn't leave my turn table until I got out of high school. I got everything up to pack is back on vinyl and I have everything except Glow on disc. I wish I could find that one. Then my collection would be complete. You can follow them at Ravenlunatics.com. And if you ever get a chance to see them live do it. they don't make them like Raven any more. Extra Extra credit, Party killers was a fans only album of covers that came out right before Extermination. If you can find that one you are a true RAVEN LUNATIC! Cheers. ROCK UNTIL YOU DROP!

I had the privilege of going to school with with John and Mark, memories of the Slatyford 6th form common room in the hot summers of the mid 70's when everyone in there played guitar, bass or was musical in some way. Loved their music over all of these years and often wished I had had the same guts to stick with music as they have. It's good to think that guys from Newcastle stuck it out and made such a massive mark on metal music.

Massively under-rated act. I have loved them ever since they released 'Don't Need Your Money', which was one of the most important singles of the NWOBHM genre. I bought my copy, along with the first two albums directly from Neat Records as they had no local suppliers in my area of the UK and they sent me Raven stickers and badges as well. Such an energetic band. You can't go wrong with any of the albums, but I will personally always go to the debut as they were the forerunners of thrash and at the time I had just not heard anything ese like it - looking back from 2021 it is hard to understand just how groundbreaking it was.

I love this channel for covering some of these great old bands that kinda slip under the radar of the heavy metal collective unconscious, and Raven is a great example... I was incredibly surprised to find out they weren't just still releasing albums after the '80s, they are still releasing new albums to this day! They were surely highly influential on the speed and thrash metal thing - contemporaries of Motorhead and Venom, managing to do much the same thing that those more famous bands did but in their own unique way - but somehow almost nobody ever seems to remember who they are. Sure, that athletic gimmick was never going to carry them far into the cynical '80s and was bound to disappear fast, but Raven had more going for them than just goofy costume uniforms, with some really solid early extreme metal without straying far from their original sound even through the difficult 1990s, and they really had talent, personality, and a stage presence and energy that should have left a longer lasting impression on historians, audiences, and critics than they somehow did. It's sad to hear about some of the tragedies to hit the band over the decades - heart attacks and injuries and so on - but it's great to see that Raven are still around and still sound great!

Saw them for the third time last night. I don't know what the fuck they're on, but the older they get, the faster and more energetic they get. I can't name a single other band with that level of power. Raven are in a league of their own, and a true never-miss whenever they come to town.

I can confirm. Since 2010, I’ve seen them 13 times. The last one being only a few weeks ago - on their 50th anniversary- and they did one of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Of 13 times, every show was amazing - but this last one was mind blowing. They are one of the few old school groups that regularly tour through the Carolina’s. Best live band.

I LOVE their firrst two albums and other period tracks (Crazy World, Inquisitor).
The All For One was quite a bit of a let down, ugly drums and the unhinged wildness was gone.
They've never sounded as wild again as on those first two albums.

I tried to get into Raven back in the 80s when I was experimenting with bands I never heard of, and the first album I bought was The Pack is Back. I hated that album. It was the cheesiest music I ever heard, and I never again bought another Raven album. Years later on CZcams, I find out that they actually have some kick ass music out there. lol I guess I picked the wrong album for my first impression. hahaha

Even though I've been into rock & metal since the mid 80s and they have a HUGE catalog, I didn't discover them until 2021 somehow. Seems like there's a lot of great songs and I like how they haven't really changed their style over the years or gotten mellower over the years like some hard bands do. I like Everything Louder the best, then probably have to go old school with Rock Until You Drop. Thunder Down Under probably is my favorite song. And they put out another album in 2023! Awesome

I first saw these guys in the summer of 1983, on the 'Kill "Em All For One tour. Metallica was the opener. It was at a skating rink in my home town of Old Bridge, NJ. Metallica held their own that night. I think it was their 3rd or 4th show upon moving to New Jersey. Raven absolutely dominated on that evening. Not only were the songs fast, but they were also incredibly TIGHT. Saw them again in New York about a year later and still to this day it was one of the best live shows I've ever seen.
