What Would We Do If The Feed Stores Closed? | Improving The Land For Our Goats

- Have you ever thought about what you'd do if all the feed stores shut down? If you're a farmer/homesteader, like ourselves, it's a great question to think about and prepare for. Today, we're selectively clearing out some cedar trees in our goat pasture that are near good trees such as oak, persimmon, etc. This is just one way, we're preparing for feed stores to close (if they ever should). Check out the video for more of our ideas of how we would manage a farm with no feed stores! Hope you enjoy!

The goats are loving the branches to munch on goat heaven. ❤️🇦🇺👍
Am I the only one who watches Jacob push over trees with his bare hands and thinks "Sasquatch"? lol
He's a Marine...yep
That's funny lol
Hercules 🤣
There are a lot of Sasquatches in Oklahoma especially around Broken Bow, Ok.
Yes he is a sasquatch! Very Awesome folks. My wife and I love them to pieces.
That’s no puppy anymore! Wow he just gets more beautiful! 🥰
Judah is growing, good too see him...thanks for the video...take care and may GOD BLESS y'all.
🤗 Good afternoon.
Yup, after thought. 🤔 When it comes to times of trouble I guess for the most part people don't always stop and think about it. People pay for freedom with their lives and should not ever be taken for granted. Where I am, 🇨🇦, my main daily thought is -- the Lord has promised to never leave us nor forsake us. He is coming back for His own. Praise the Lord. 🙏☝️
Anyway you folks have a blessed day and God bless you all. 💞👍🙏☝️
Yes God will get us through anything
@@SawyerRidgeFarm you bet 'ya!
So happy to hear your family is doing better! The shortness of breath lingers long after the other symptoms are gone. Like a bronchitis that won't go. I hope & pray they all recover fully soon. We lost a few in my family, as so many others have. Never pass on the chance to say I love you is how many will remember this terrible year.
1st time I've heard Judah bark 😆... cutting a path for the 4 wheeler is like painting yourself in a corner 👍
He is getting his bark
I’m so glad to hear that your family’s health is on the upswing. 💕
Jacob you make it look so easy pushing those trees over

Thank you for the prayers Diane
Glad to hear your family members are doing ok. Take care and God Bless you both
Not only the acorns, your goats eat all kinds of greenery, just as they are nibbling on the cedar spikes now. Jacob, you also have the cedar wood and other wood you are removing to trade for pasture grazing. At the current lumber prices it would problem be a good trade.
It is good to hear your family is doing so much better.
When We Started Downsizing for the move out here from our Farm in Upstate N.Y. it Took planning, BUT with that being said, I told my Farm neighbor who had Milk cows, who Grew corn, told him, if he wanted to plant corn or what ever he could use our land.. It helped to keep it open - Where growth would start - and it helped him as well ! Always pays to help one another !
That's a great working with your neighbor
Nice work y’all. Jacob pushing over trees like it’s nothing 👍🏻💪🏻
Its one of the workouts on the farm lol
I think we have Paul Bunyan here instead of Jacob! He just pushed those trees over like he's been doing this all his life! Lol! God bless and y'all have a Happy New Year!
🇺🇸🎉🎊🇺🇸
Haha that's funny, I do enjoy land management

Very enjoyable watching y'alls way of life. Unfortunately I'm a town dweller and can't afford to buy a house let alone land. How beautiful your home and family are. Best wishes to you and your family, and a very Happy New Year to one and all from England, UK.
🙏Glad your family getting better 🙏

Very informative Jacob. Yes good trees need to have light and although cedar wood is beautiful I like pretty trees. Great video. Your a one man terminator when taking trees down.
Thank you Beverly lol
That pup's getting big!
You guys are seriously some of my biggest faves on YT! Thank you for just being you, it is clear that you guys don't put on a show, I love that.

Yes God is good all the time. So happy we are one of your faves
Continued prayers for your family glad to hear that doing well
Thank you Carla
My goats are funny. We have slash pines and Brazilian Peppers that are a pain here in SW Florida so we try to get rid of them. The goats love pine needles and all parts of the Brazilian Peppers. When they hear the chain saw, they come running and start eating the needles or the pepper. When they here the tree crack they scatter and as soon as the tree falls, they run back and start eating it. Goats are really smart animals.
Wow Judah is getting huge
You are addressing my number 1 concern about keeping livestock. Given the current efforts to starve us out without dependence on the government, feed will be under threat too. I sincerely appreciate your humble approach. My God bless the work of your hands and your family's health.
Do what you can and trust God.
@@SawyerRidgeFarm I've never heard better, more concise advice.
Good game plan! Buying extra feed & hay to have on hand helps too.
Your land is looking really different nice.
Well, I have given this a lot of thought. I started with a small garden behind my chicken house this year. After I put their fence around it and let them in, it took a while to figure out that they could eat it. They cleaned it out. Learned - need lots more growing room!!! Indian corn is hardier and keeps going into the early frosts. Chickens love sprouts and worms too - need to grow the seeds for this though.
Also, dog food ----- Well, my dog loves chicken (but does not attack the chickens - only eats prepped meat in the house) and EGGS - wow, she loves eggs and that is a really good food for everyone.
I am looking into goats, but they take a lot of planning. First, was going to fence them into an area around pond and then realize they would really mess up the pond. So, back to the other side with the barn as some shelter and easy to get them on back porch to milk (if I get to that point). Cancel yard man and turn them loose :-) We will see on that one. Still trying to learn about goats - have 28 acres, but not all fenced to keep them in, but had some one else's for a while and just turned them loose and they stayed in the area pretty near the house which is where they get fed and so, they come back after eating the wild stuff. Winter right now, will there be enough for them??? So many questions and I am almost 80 and disabled and have to pay or depend on help.
I talked to Baker Creek and discovered this HUGE beet that is used for livestock - and other grains that I can grow and just let them eat when ready. So many questions. The locals here did not cover their livestock - but, goats really need some protection.
Also, dog food is a big question. I have thought about nonflying ducks for the dog too. I would have to kill them. She is trained to NOT kill any wild animals which is good and bad. She is a service dog. And, thank goodness, she love veggies
Keep up these kinds of videos. Just putting up industrial freeze dried food is not a viable self reliance skill.
Taylor gave y’all a big shout tonight Happy New Year 🎊🎆🎈 Jacob and Alex make Jason and Jared behave 🤦🏻♀️Love you Guys 🎄🎈🎊✨

I enjoy your vlogs so much & you are 1 of my top channels I watch for every day. Good to know your family members are recovering. I’m praying this storm that’s coming will not cause any harm to you or the animals. Blessings to you in the coming New Year!
Just like now during pandemic keep extra supplies on hand even a little more than we usually do thx Jacob God bless you and Alex and hoping for a great New Year 💕🙏💕
Aww Jacob the video was very informative and as for leaving the four wheeler on the wrong side of the trees I would say that is Jason Crockers fault. You’ve been hanging around him to much and now you’re doing things like him LOL. Just kidding I love watching both your channels and can’t wait to see what trouble/ mischief you two get into. Alex the video looked GREAT, you did an incredible job !
Thank you Barbara your right that is what jason would do
Putting in that work C'mon good tips!!
I love your videos. Always good content . Your live videos with the Crockers are hysterical . I've never heard Judah bark before. WOW !! Continued prayers for your family . Blessings for the new year . 😤😍
Happy New Year. As Farr as feed needed, Buy ahead when you can!
I live in the Northwest, but I would think in your area, a green house could extend your growing season dramatically. The leftovers could go to composting, or to feed the goats, chickens, rabbits, and pigs. Another thing would be to plant fruit and nut trees, along with berries of all types. Probably have to keep the goats away from those. Planting native fruits and berries outside your protective fencing could bring in wildlife for hunting too. Any excess food you didn't share could be set up as a roadside stand, If you two had any extra time for that. Hope the best for you two, and I was glad to hear you say your family is doing well with their recovery.
For me personally, I have feed for all my animals for at least 3 months...and I do rotation on the food. Also, have 3 months of food for the humans also. Still praying for you and your family 🙏🙏
Y’all will have a good bit of cedar to mill for projects. Enjoy watching all of your videos. Happy New Year!
Never put small caliber chaps on a large caliber man 😜 I do a lot of thinking about feed concerns for livestock .. I wouldn't want to be in a situation where I could not provide feed for whatever critters I was taking care of, especially if I were depending on them for sustenance .. The amount of space required to grow feed really aught to be taken into account, if one is contemplating self sufficiency, and I covered that in "More Food Less Space", with the feed to dress weight conversion ratio for hogs .. but it applies to other critters as well. Trees and other perennials are a great way to provide calories and protein .. not just for ourselves, but also for livestock. There is one you might consider planting as a companion for those mast producers: Siberian Pea Shrubs. Siberian pea shrubs are similar to pigeon peas, but will grow in 7a .. they are nitrogen fixers, so they can help improve the soil around the oaks, and additionally produce a legume that can be used as feed for livestock (we can eat them, too, although they aren't exactly 'tasty') You can do some research on Siberian pea and other useful perennials at permies.com (and I can hook you up with more resources, if you like). Good topic, Jacob!
Blessings❤️
I remember in the dead of winter, with snow on the ground, we would sit in the house and shuck dry corn from the cobs for our chickens. Sometimes the next day you would have a blister on your thumbs.
We also had a slop bucket for the pigs. All kitchen scraps went into the bucket. With a little corn on occasion. Our dogs got the food leftovers, which wasn't much! I had 5 Brothers! And 2 Sisters.
I never felt poor, but I guess we were. There was 8 of us kids. Our Father died when the oldest was 15 and I, being the youngest, was 10 months old. Our Mother got a pension check for $150.00 dollars a month. Our Father was a WW1 Veteran. This money was lowered as each child turned 18. In my Senior year of High School, 1969/1970 we got $65.00 a month, for my Mother and myself. (We didn't receive Foodstamps.) This had to pay the electric and groceries for the month, any clothes , medicine or anything else. I remember my Mother taking a skirt, bought at a thrift store for a quarter, and making me a "New" dress! I worked at the School and earned a little extra money. We used it to buy my clothes for school.
Oats were cheap, cornmeal was too. Sometimes the chickens got a little bit of that. When spring came, the garden went in and we all, including the animals, ate what was in season. My mother canned up everything she could. We had apple trees, berries, Hickory nuts, hazelnuts/Filberts, and blackberries. Huckleberries and anything wild.
I thought we lived well. Many people looked down on us. Now people WANT to live this way. Times have changed. If and when they get worse, I feel that I could survive. My animals would eat well too! GOD bless
Thank you Rita for your experience in life it is very interesting
Glad to here your family members are getting their health back. That is wonderful news. Also you thinking ahead on feeding your animals in an emergency situation. and preparing for that takes a lot of stress off of you. Buying an extra bag of feed when you shop for it ,stock pile hay when you can and if you had just a shelter with a roof or tin , you could cover the hay with tarps. We don’t have animals, just a cat,LOL but we do stockpile emergency food and water. It better to prepare and not need it than to not prepare and have nothing and that leads to a whole other situation. You two have it together, very wise beyond your years and Jacob you push trees over, why even bring the saw. LOL God Bless you both, you are a wonderful couple and your videos are always right on. Have a wonderful New Year and take care and be safe. 💕🇺🇸💕🇺🇸💕🇺🇸
Thank you linda for these encouraging words
All good advice. There's always options when you think about it. Have a Blessed Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year! Hugs to Y'all
I'd be stocking up.
Happy New Year and God bless you all.
Great video! You guys are doing what you need to do for your property to help you both as you get older and for the livestock you have. Making things better has never gotten old. Happy New Year and God Bless you two!
I get my feed from Tractor Supply. One of their employees caught COVID. The store was closed for 2 weeks. I had to visit the store in a neighboring town.
Really enjoyed the video and sounds like y’all have a great plan. Great footage Alex. You two make a great team and as you continue to walk with God, there’s nothing you can’t accomplish. Happy New Year
Barter red cedar for what you need.

Judah is getting his big boy bark!!!
No lie...he is a great protector!
Haha! Yes! Funny story... as I was editing this video, he heard himself barking, woke up from a dead sleep alert and ready to fight. Had to go outside to scare away the “dogs barking”. Haha! It was too funny! 😂
@@SawyerRidgeFarm That is awesome! Cane Corso are the best! Congrats on such a good dog!
Soom good ideas Jacob👍
That's such good News I'm so pleased 🙅🙏😘.
JO JO IN VT 💕😄☃
Great news about your family ! Happy New Year !
When the feed stores closed ans grain was a shorages the local farmers gather into a co- op bargain share storage builing. Tax write off too. Our local neigbor grows in seperate patches with trees in areas the mixed veach oat and wheat like mix / alapha spelling wrong sorry. Anyway they bought bulk which the market was the only way to purchase of basic feeds since the shortages.
Happy new year sawyer ridge and family! :)
