In the winter of 1942, Morozov volunteered to help break the siege of Leningrad that had lasted for more than a year.

This actually makes sense in some cases, old men have less to lose and if they can do the job then why not. This illustrates why a militia is so important, at some point the regular army may not be enough and you may need the help of trained civilians even old ones. You don't always have to be able to run for miles with a heavy backpack, just as long as you can get to the fight and accurately fire a rifle that is sometimes good enough.

With age comes much wisdom and much experience. Normally the tradeoff is that one's body degrades. This man had the wisdom, experience and enough strength left to carve a legacy truly worthy of the title badass.
