Adult to a 9 year old American: "A BB gun? No! You'll shoot your eye out!" Adult to a 6 year old Soviet: "Here's a pistol. For the motherland, comrade!"
he could have told his grandkid in the '90s that whined about walking to school that back in his day when he was on his way to school he had to every morning stop the german warmachine.
I know he had at least two children and lived to see the birth of his grandchildren. So I have no doubt, even if they didn't hear it from him, he would have at least told his children, who pass along those stories. They know their grandpa.
I understand the joke but I just want to say this for the sake of history and to give these children attention as well. During the U.S Civil War there was between 250,000 and 420,000 males (both sides combined) thag were under the age of 18 who got involved in the conflict. Including It's estimated that around 100,000 Union soldiers were 15 years or younger. The youngest soldier in the entire conflict would be "Edward Black" who was only 8 years old. He would also be considered the youngest casualty (wounded). The youngest soldier killed during the conflict would be "Charles Edwin" who would be hit by an enemy shell during the battle of Antietam. He died from his wounds 3 days later at the age 13. Keep in mind that a musician was also considered a soldier. There was 80,000 - 100,000 Musicians in the war. But it is not guaranteed that these numbers were mostly those under 18, among these musicians were also grown men. Majority of these minors weren't forced but rather volunteers due to the mind set of "Adventure, Fun, and Glory" The youngest noncommissioned officer would be "Johnny Clem" who became a sergeant at the age of 13 after he shot a Confederate Colonel. Also keep in mind that many minors would lie about their age meaning a minor who claims to be 18 but was really let's say...16 could've taken that secret to his grave when killed.
If I remember right the US had a 13 year old boy in its ranks during WW2, granted he lied about his age, but I'm not sure how you mistake a middle schooler for a high school senior.
Just think about the amount of positive effect this kid had on the moral of the unit, but it's double edged sword, if he actually got killed it would impact the unit even more in the negative context
A possibility could also happened that the soldiers who had witnessed this , could either be extremely demoralized or have the extreme urge to win as to avenge him
I think it would be the other way around. If he died, those men would stop at nothing to brutally murder every last german they could find. If he died, I would want nothing but vengeance.
For those who were curious what became of Sergei he lived a pretty good life it seems. Not only is he not a boomer (the literal term stemming from the term “baby boom”), but Russians don’t have a word for boomers, or what came before them, since the birth rate didn’t skyrocket the way it did in the US.
Kid soldiers are more ruthless, there’s plenty of them it’s not a uncommon thing In certain parts of the world, and back then they had honor and actually took responsibility instead of playing victim, kids or teens would run away from home in the civil war or to fight in ww1 and ww2 or lie about age, they didn’t care they just needed man power

If that story is impressive enough then have a look at Alexander Alexandrovich "San Sanych" Kolesnikov. He became a son of the regiment at 12, but he actually hang a lot with the recon troop becoming a recon-sabateur himself. Ended up highly decorated (even by adult standards) and severely wounded a few times. His story is depicted in the film "Это было в разведке" (or "that happened in the reconnaissance"). There was a quite strong scene in the film when he came to the mess hall with all his awards at his chest making the elder soldiers who had ridiculed him earlier feel really awkward.
@@LeCommieBoi That’s a possibility! My money, however, is in the fact that the Soviets needed every man they could get during WW2. Here is a clarification, children couldn't be conscripted in the red army. These were often orphans who joined on their own will. They often were given the role of distributing munition and few ever touched a gun. The uniforms were often resized by custom tailors to fit the child or teen. Their age would often be exagerated in documents.
"Hey, Alexandr. This kid's onlyfour years old. He doesn't know what he's getting himself into!" "The documents say he's 40. Good enough for me, Romanov."
Yes, that is true. And the Soviet Union and Russia does not try to hide it. There was even a scene when a child had a pistol and shot a German machine gunner at point blank range.
War changes every aspect of a person and this 6 year old shows that war makes you mature quickly but still had the aspects of a child by keeping the soldiers morals up
They fought for their survival against the war machine of the third reich, they had no choice but to fight against the nazis as if they won, they would have exterminated us, and the possibility of their victory was actually not that small, at least in 1941/42. It makes sense that every one had to be involved and at that time no one was joking, Stalin’s order to fully mobilise makes sense and is justified
A lot of Soviet units had such children in their roster, so called battalion's sons/daughters. Most of them was orphaned and had no one to take care of them. Sergei was one of the youngest, that's why his story is relatively known. As strange as it may sound, children provided soldiers with emotional anchors amidst the carnage they were experiencing every day.
Nikolai: Aigh, WE NEED BACKUP Sergei: ok ill get my friends. "Later in the russian kindergarten" Sergei: hey i need help. Everyone on the school: *Okay*
I served during the Cold War.. When the Soviet Union was our greatest threat.. But I believed in knowing my enemy, so I read whatever I could find in the base Library, first hand accounts by Red Army soldiers and civilians.. and the lesson I cam e away with, was that the Soviet government was my enemy, our enemy.. But the average Russian human being was not.. I never "hated" the Russians.. something that surprisingly, the Air Force encouraged.. "hate" is a useless emotion that can drive you to tragic mistakes.. and we didn't do "mistakes" This young man.. is an inspiration.. after all the horrors he endured, survived.. he accepted the soldiers as his new family.. and he didn't fight to kill for it's own sake.. he put himself in harm's way to HELP his new family get through, to survive.. He worked to lift spirits amidst the horror they all faced.. He fought FOR life... not simply to take it. To my mind that makes him the greatest kind of hero.. One I can respect... even if he was in the Red Army.. and I was in a Nuclear Missile Wing.. That we never had to fight the Russians is one of the greatest non events in History.. One I am still grateful to God that cooler heads prevailed.. May those saner voices be heard again in the current events.. and there be no hot war.. God Bless everyone and may we never know another world war..

Crazy. At six years old, many kids play soldier. This one did it for real.
At 6, I was playing GI Joe's action figures from Mattel.
A gun shoots unlimited gasoline and a second gun shoots a cool fire ball.

The irony of him being too frail to continue military service after the war. What a tragic life, but also what a hero.
It might even be what he endured during the war that made him too frail for post-war military service
@@LeCommieBoi That’s a possibility! My money, however, is in the fact that the Soviets needed every man they could get during WW2. I dont think a child losing his parents and seeing the horrors of war is wholesome
@@nuttmc4803 no but seeing how the soldier adopted him and raised him as one of their own, jumping into rivers and giving him presents
That warmed my heart
It wasn't Sergey's mother that saved him. It was his neighbor.
But before she could join him she got shot by german soldiers
Here is a clarification, children couldn't be conscripted in the red army. These were often orphans who joined on their own will. They often were given the role of distributing munition and few ever touched a gun. The uniforms were often resized by custom tailors to fit the child or teen. Their age would often be exagerated in documents.
"Hey, Alexandr. This kid's onlyfour years old. He doesn't know what he's getting himself into!"
"The documents say he's 40. Good enough for me, Romanov."
Yes, that is true. And the Soviet Union and Russia does not try to hide it. There was even a scene when a child had a pistol and shot a German machine gunner at point blank range.

When Stalin said he wanted every pair of hands for the defence of the motherland. He REALLY wasn't kidding.
@Just Dope shut up bot
They fought for their survival against the war machine of the third reich, they had no choice but to fight against the nazis as if they won, they would have exterminated us, and the possibility of their victory was actually not that small, at least in 1941/42. It's wholesome that he was loved by his unit

@@Yoshikage.. Hi.
@Anti furry Patrol *do it and succesfully capture you* challange accepted
I served during the Cold War.. When the Soviet Union was our greatest threat.. But I believed in knowing my enemy, so I read whatever I could find in the base Library, first hand accounts by Red Army soldiers and civilians.. and the lesson I cam e away with, was that the Soviet government was my enemy, our enemy.. But the average Russian human being was not.. I never "hated" the Russians.. something that surprisingly, the Air Force encouraged.. "hate" is a useless emotion that can drive you to tragic mistakes.. and we didn't do "mistakes"
This young man.. is an inspiration.. after all the horrors he endured, survived.. he accepted the soldiers as his new family.. and he didn't fight to kill for it's own sake.. he put himself in harm's way to HELP his new family get through, to survive..
