    What You'll Learn in TouchDesigner Beginner Crash Course:
    - The fundamentals of the TouchDesigner paradigm: Never used a node-based programming environment before? I walk you through the basics of TouchDesigner logic and workflows, explaining exactly what nodes and wires are and how they work. This includes a walkthrough of the basic settings and preferences you can leverage in TouchDesigner that set you up for success and make your life easier.
    - Discover all six of the operator families used by TouchDesigner, and how they integrate with the TouchDesigner workflow. I’ll walk you through an example project for each of them. Operator families include…
    Signal processing and channel data (CHOPs)
    Compositing and texture manipulation (TOPs)
    Procedural 3d and rendering (SOPs)
    Data processing (DATs)
    Materials and shading (MATs)
    User interface and controls (COMPs)
    - Real time generative graphics basics: From generating graphics using dynamic noise data in real-time to audio-responsive 3D geometry, we’ll go through multiple examples of how to start creating beautiful generative content in TouchDesigner. Interactive, immersive, generative media is the reason you’re investing in learning TouchDesigner, and my course helps you get started creating it right away.
    - Simple, day-1 preset system: Most TouchDesigner preset systems are too complicated for beginners. With my day-1 preset system, anyone can start creating presets without any prior TouchDesigner experience, which is a massive advantage most people don’t have when they’re starting out.
    - Time-saving keyboard shortcuts and application tricks: This should be intuitive, but it’s not. Having these under your belt from the get-go is huge time-saver.

    Such a great series of tutorials, love them. A quick FYI though for other beginners like myself, remember that if you're running the Free version of TD as a learner tool, you're limited to the 1280 X 1280 resolution, so it will look slightly different when following along. Not too much of a big deal but worth noting. Great channel btw.

      Great point, thanks for sharing! For anyone interested, you can check out a full list of the Non-Commercial license limitations here: docs.derivative.ca/TouchDesigner_Non-Commercial
      Fortunately for beginners, the image resolution is one of the only major limitations of the free Non-Commercial License, which makes it great for those looking to learn TouchDesigner! You'll be able to use nearly everything that's in the paid Commercial/Pro versions.

    Ive been watching TD tutorials for almost a year now, and this is the one that i have been looking/waiting for the whole time. You answered several fundamental questions I had, and I can now get started building whats been in my head all along. thanks for that.

    TD not exactly crushing it with layout tools 😂 while precise, lots of clicking and typing and switching tools and spaces to make what would be pretty simple mods in most every design app 😂 nice tut…moving along;)

      For sure, one thing to note about this particular approach is that we’re keeping things beginner friendly by using one operator per function. You could also approach this with Composite TOPs, which composite multiple layers at the same time.
      We chose not to go this route because it can be confusing for beginners to know what kind of results to expect when compositing layers of different resolutions within the same TOP. The Composite TOP also doesn’t allow positioning of each individual layer, which is something beginners might expect coming from other platforms.

    I've been following through your Bigginer Crash Course. Thank you so much!! I have an issue with Constant2 window. it seems updated? doesn't look same as yours: Constant/Output/Common options you can see. There is an issue wot "!" warning mark on the Constant2 window soon I dropped on window. do you have answer for this issue?(it might not an issue 😅 I cannot move forward form this step. some how I cannot change the resolution of canvas size (greyed) on Composite and Constant2 might be the issue? Thank you so much!

    • @TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ
      @TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ  Před rokem

      Great question! The Constant TOP has been updated (there’s a new Output page), but all of the settings we cover in this video are in the same place. The first thing to check is whether or not you’ve connected another TOP to the input of Constant2. When you connect another operator to the input of a Constant TOP, it automatically sets the resolution and will grey out the resolution parameters.
      For the Composite TOP, the resolution parameters will be greyed out in most normal use cases, as the content being input to the Composite will set its resolution. Hope that helps!

    thank you! can I ask why/if it’s better to chain the comps at the end the way you did , instead of plugging all three butterfly and the background into the same composite ?

    • @TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ
      @TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ  Před 2 lety +2

      It isn't particularly better or worse. In this case, it's often easier for new TouchDesigner artists to have operators doing discreet functions (everything doing one thing). There are ways you could optimize this network to only use one Composite TOP, but then it'd involve a few extra tricks and techniques, so in this case for simplicity and getting you used to creating networks, we used different composites.

    16:30 - would it be possible somehow to reuse a single instance of the over1 + over 2 combo with only the unique assets being duplicated, and then each being routed back out individually. hope this makes sense. thx for these vids!

    • @TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ
      @TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ  Před 6 měsíci

      Great question! In the context of a larger project, you might work with a Base COMP that contains the two Over TOPs and reuse this component for the additional textures.
      Try this: connect a Null TOP to the Over2 TOP. Then, select _only_ the over1 and over2 TOPs via right clicking and dragging. With the two TOPs selected, right click in an empty area of the network editor, and then click "Collapse Selected" in the menu that pops up. This will create a reusable Base COMP that contains the two Over TOPs (and In/Out TOPs for routing the texture in/out of the COMP). You can simply make a copy of this Base COMP and connect different textures to the input in place of the additional Over TOPs. Hope that helps!

    Great tutorial. I'm sure there's a reason, but I'm a little confused why you can only change x/y positions of everything in a composite/over and not individual layers

    • @TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ
      @TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ  Před 3 měsíci

      The intent here is to introduce and practice the compositing workflow in the program. The benefit of positioning this way is that each "unit", i.e. butterfly + title, is automatically aligned (along with the individual components themselves within the unit) without having to specifically define a constant pixel-based position value. In practice, if the size of one of the elements were to change slightly, we wouldn't then have to go through and manually adjust each of the image positions to maintain the layout. Hope that helps!

    Does anyone have ''Not enough sources specified'' on Null? This is my first tutorial and rechecked everything and it's just like the tutorial. Why I can't connect Comp2 in Null?

    • @TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ
      @TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ  Před 2 lety +1

      Can you double check if the Null you made is the same family as the comp2? It should be a Null TOP I believe, you might have accidentally made a Null from a different family.

    Every time i see tutorials for this software i end up with more questions. At 21 or so mins in, why would you use a whole load of composites in series when you could just use one and connect all three of the overs to the one comp? I don't see why - it seems massively inefficient

    • @TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ
      @TheInteractiveImmersiveHQ  Před 2 lety +1

      A lot of the time in beginner videos, we have to find a balance between what will be easiest for someone to dive into and get working with vs what will be most efficient. What you'll often notice in a TouchDesigner development journey is at the beginning you use a few operators, then in your intermediate stage you learn to use tons and tons of operators doing different things and you make crazy wild networks, but then the high-end gurus end up with crazy amounts of functionality just from a few operators that are mostly GPU accelerated with not much visuals to really follow with your eyes when it comes to data processing. So it's all part of the natural learning curve, and in this case specifically, if we went with just one Composite TOP, then likely what a lot of beginners would do is try to use the transformation parameters of the composite and get frustrated they don't have a "per-layer" transform, which is what more people are used to having coming from other environments/softwares. Hope that answers your question!
