A couple weeks ago I was asked to help move an old stinky cooler in our Church coffee shop. Turns out it was not the cooler that was stinky, but the previously-unknown floor drain underneath - and you bet that's where the espresso machine drained into. It was chokkers to be sure and the smell was... Well it was bad. Turns out the church had an old hand-crank drain snake and after I got done telling everyone I know a bloke down in AUS that taught me everything he knows, I got stuck in. You can bet your mother's brother I got that drain running cleaner than new. I even got my hands in there and dug out the old gunk. What Bruce does not tell you is that it takes DAYS to get the smell off you! Bruce - I couldn't have done it without your wisdom!
I live in a low-rise apartment block. A couple years ago I came home from work to find my kitchen sink absolutely chockers, a real disaster zone. Turns out the upstairs neighbours had been dumping their used coffee grounds down the communal kitchen waste pipe and blocked the pipe! The drain cleaning crew the landlord called out said it was like trying to break through concrete. Moral of the story, never put your coffee grounds down the drain, put them in the food recycling.

They're solid organics, should never go down the sink. Compost or the trash if you can't compost.

I'm never sure if it's voice over but I love the thought that you're in an open coffee shop and the patrons are hearing just enthusiastic rambling from beneath the counter :D
I want to believe that it isn't but the audio quality is suspiciously good. There's one part at around 5:41 where he starts saying "wow" just before stuff starts spewing up out of the drain, so maybe it is, maybe it isn't. Could also depend on the situation of course. Who knows, but either way he's a bloody legend! Nobody can do it like Bruce.
But if it IS voiceover he's not only a drain cleaning legend but also an amazing voiceover-er (what's that even called?) considering how perfectly genuine it always sounds! I don't think I could sound that genuine when reacting to footage I had already seen, or in this case experienced. If it isn't, well, I think Bruce has perfected microphone placement cause the audio is always perfectly crisp
Bit weird to come back with an update, but I think I've come to the conclusion that it is in fact voiceover. Just watched his newest video and you can hear breathing in the footage itself while Bruce is talking at the same time. But that doesn't take anything away from these videos! Bruce is still an absolute bloody legend and the videos just never miss
Drain cleaning Australia is increasingly becoming one of my favorite Friday morning shows.
Love your videos, bud. Little tip from a plumber in Canada, get yourself a couple of flood dams, the kind you fill with water, and a shower squeegee. makes mess management WAY easier. Keep it up, man. The industry needs your optimism.

@MicusII thanks! Lol they definitely make a difference. Might not pull them out every day, but I make sure they're there if I need to hahaha. We may have to give Bruce a break about the mess in the van, though lol.
Bruce! You're an inspiration mate. I cleared a load of peas and pasta from the kitchen sink last week. Wife couldnt understand why I got so excited and kept exclaiming " woo hoo you little rippaaaa"

Two important words for coffee shops:
KNOCK BOX.
A clever little box with a padded bar across it that you smack the portafilter on to knock the grounds into a bin for disposal/composting. Very handy tool to have around the espresso machine.

Hey Bruce, I've watched a ton of these videos now and they're awesome. Keeping me sane in my spinny chair. I do wonder why you don't carry a shopvac (wet/dry vac)? It seems like it would be helpful in these enclosed spaces to suck up some of the gunk that comes up before it spreads everywhere (or at least help clean it up after it spreads everywhere). I live and die by my shopvac for a lot of projects, but I'm not a plumber so I'm not going to pretend like I know it's the solution in these situations.

I feel you for the coffee grounds bit. I used to work in a smallish office where I helped out with the hospitality side of things just as a means to mentally reset between development tasks. We had an issue at one point where someone was dumping the used grounds down the drain (and not flushing them through) instead of dumping in the garbage (no compost recycling there). It got bad enough we had to call out a plumber because the drain plugged and the disposal stopped grinding. Yeah, that stuff can be serious (it's also VERY abrasive).
I’m just stating the obvious but why is the coffee shop putting coffee granules down the pipe . Coffee granules are usually recycled into garden wasters in the Uk , just a thought Bruce . Otherwise your doing a fab job , keep up the good work mate .
Same here in the states. Coffee shops bag the grounds and set them out with a sign “free grounds for your garden”. First-come-first-served, and if there’s a bag when I go by in the morning, they’re usually gone by the afternoon.
My hibiscus plant loves coffee grounds.
The grounds are collected as oer usual ... this is the accumulation of the overflow and spillage

Coffee shop or whatever, there is a good reason we usually throw coffee grounds either into a composter or the food scraps trashbin. The drain is not meant for flushing powder.

Bruce!! Bruce!! I am absolutely amazed that a professional like you does not have an eccentric cone to act as an anti-spill reservoir. It would also include an overflow drain hose near the top. One cone for 50mm pipes and one for 100mm pipes. Come on mate .... get with it, and smell the coffee. A bloke can't have too many tools!! Cheers

Cheers from French Quarter New Orleans!! We brew coffee every morning, and the grounds always go in a bag, then into the trash. No way does any of that....end up in the drain. Surprised though how many people simply actually they'll just 'rinse away somehow'..Uh, maybe not so much.... PS We are having heavy deluge rains every afternoon since Louisiana's officially into hurricane season. Once the rain let up a bit earlier today - we drove by one car park place I really like. I saw the water backed up and made Ric slow the car down, making sure that yard drain was flowing correctly. It was; everything just needed time to catch up a bit, but the water swirled great...ran strongly into the drain. And I thought, "Got to check this for Bruce..doing my bit to keep those drains clear.." HEY!!!! The day's gonna come, mate - an online Bruce store...FIRST PRODUCT: a baby tee shirt that says, "Little Ripper"

Another way would be to cut a hole in the bottom of the tote, put plumbers putty around the hole on the underside, then when you put the jet in the hole in the bottom of the tote, any overflow will be contained within the tote. Totes are relatively cheap, and reusable.
