Just to be aware, Mitch, the second guy to sing, and Kirsty, often change their look so dramatically that some people don't recognize them.
Avi to Matt has been the only change.
Throw a dart, hard to go wrong with them.
Make sure to put "O Come All Ye Faithful" on your Christmas list!

There's a statement that's been going around on the internet about the different versions of Sound of Silence that I agree with 100%. The original Simon & Garfunkel version was a gentle warning of things to come. The Disturbed cover was an angry response that the warning was ignored. The Pentatonix version was hopeful optimism that the warning will still be heard.

The only change in PTX lineup has been the bass singers, Avi left in 2017 to care for family, Matt Sallee( man on far left) took his place. I Know what you mean when you focus on one that's who you hear, that is crazy! They are THE A Capella group. Try their early original "Love Again" Kevin the beatboxer is insane in that one!

I really hope that when they do start touring again, that you are able to go see them live. I saw them in concert in 2018, hands down one of the best concerts I had ever been to and I have been to many...if you ever get a chance to, listen to "AHA The Star Vista" Avi the old Bass nearly breaks the sound system, and Mitch the one with the high voice well it is his spot light and he almost breaks the sound barrier...it is also a live performance.

Many Pentaholics are also Home Fries who support Home Free. Pentatonix took the music world by storm when they won the Sing-Off in 2011, and then I think it was 2013 or so when Home Free won. Home Free is billed as country acapella, but they can do multiple genres. I would say Pentatonix is awe-inspiring and passionate about their music, while Home Free gives you the warm fuzzies with serious musick and a whole ton of fun with other songs with their talent and soul.

Anything Pentatonix is amazing! Scott and Mitch have their own channel called Superfruit. They haven't done new content in a while and probably never will again :( but their stuff is crazy good! A bit more R rated than PTX. If you ever want to go down that path, I know you will have great views for the content! You may want to start with Beyonce, Empire Medley, Defying Gravity or for more comedic content, their Frozen Medley, or Hip Hop Goes Broadway 1 & 2! With Superfruit, there is usually some bloopers or fun content at the end of their videos so you always want to let them play until the very end! Thank you for your reaction!

In this performance, the members of Pentatonix, from left to right:
    • Far left, black guy in a white jacket: Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable), lyric bass. See my comment about Avi leaving for more detail about Matt's voice.
    • Next to Matt, the only woman in Pentatonix, with black hair in this video (but that's subject to frequent change), Kirstin (AKA Kirstie, rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado, mezzo soprano. Except that in the real world Kirstie sings anywhere from alto through coloratura soprano. If it was written for the female voice, Kirstie can sing it.
    • Middle, tall blond guy: Scott Hoying, lyric baritone. Scott's actual range extends well into the bass range on the low end and well into the tenor range on the high end.
    • Next to Scott, shorter dark haired guy: Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable), counter tenor. Mitch has a range of just over 6 octaves. Shawn Stockman, of Boyz II Men, described his voice as "one of the prettiest voices I have ever heard in my life." People frequently call his voice "angelic." He's the one you remember singing the main Freddie Mercury part from "Bohemian Rhapsody." Mitch's hair color and style, amount of facial hair, and weight are all subject to frequent change. Because of this, people frequently think they see someone new in Pentatonix when it's really Mitch or Kirstie; go by the voice, not appearance.
    • Right end, black beatboxer: Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth), beatboxer extraordinaire. In addition to being one of the best beatboxers on the planet, if not *the* best, Kevin has a lovely tenor voice and is known for the great beauty of his falsetto range, but occasionally when he wants to startle another band member (in videos where they're relaxing together) he'll come out with something in the baritone range. Kevin is classically trained on piano, saxophone, and cello. He has performed at Carnegie Hall twice, once on cello and once on saxophone. He beatboxes *while* playing the cello, a technique that he refers to as "celloboxing." He has a pre-med degree from Yale, and he speaks five languages, including Mandarin. In short, he's a genius, a true polymath. And by the way, when he laughs the whole world seems like a brighter place.

Avi Kaplan, their original bass, left in 2017 for personal reasons. Their new bass is Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable). Like Avi, Matt is a lyric bass. When describing the male vocal range, "lyric" means that the singer's actual range is greater than his nominative range. Avi is a true basso profundo - his lowest notes are low enough to actually blow out any but the very best speakers, and have been known to do exactly that in live performances, but Avi's upper register is in the baritone range.
Matt is still young, two years younger than Mitch, who used to be the youngest member of Pentatonix, and it appears that his full range is still developing. When he first joined he was obviously unable to reach the really low notes that Avi could reach, but that has changed. When I heard him sing at their Denver concert in November of 2022 I would swear that his lowest note was as low as anything I ever heard from Avi, true blowing-out-speakers basso profundo low, but his highest note was actually in the tenor range. I always knew he was good - he would never have been invited to join Pentatonix if he weren't - but at this point he's spectacular, and I expect him to continue to improve for at least another year or two.
This song doesn't fully display Matt's current range; unfortunately, I know of no song in their repertoir that does in any official recording. I expect this to change one of these days soon, but it hasn't happened yet. Keep your eyes and ears open for any new live recordings of "Hallelujah"; Matt's arrangement for the second verse of that was where I heard both that incredible low note and the incredible high note. But the only live feed recording of "Hallelujah" from their 2022 Christmas tour that I've been able to find was from the Hollywood Bowl, and in that performance "Hallelujah" was the last song they performed, at the end of the evening when their voices were all tired. Matt sings the high note just fine, but he doesn't even attempt the low note; he used a less ambitious arrangement of his solo.

yeah so heres my rundown/my opinions (correct me if im wrong on stuff) theyre an acapella group, no music, just them. they are (0:33) from left to right: kevin the beatboxer, hes classically trained and can do so many other things, scott who usually sings the lead and can take over for the beatboxer and bass when theyre singing, mitch most ppls fav who has an incredible range, kirstin the female vocalist whos people will confuse for mitch when hearing the background vocals lol, and matt the bass who is so incredible and can also sing very well, matt took over for the original bass avi, who was really really loved and people were so sad to see him go, but went on to produce amazing music. scott and mitch have a separate channel/group called superfruit, i recommend checking them out, they make medley videos, challenge videos, and have original songs as well, i could go on and on lol but im excited to see how you like them! they were on the sing off in 2011 and spoiler, they won, and theyve been together ever since. scott, mitch, and kirstie practically grew up together. they also have 3 grammys. scott created an acapella kids group called acapop! and a gropu called Citizen Queen and theyre incredible as well!

Avi left amicably. Matt Sallee took over (white coat).

Pentatonix isn't AN a cappella band; they're THE a cappella band. There are others that are very good - Home Free springs to mind - but they have limitations Pentatonix doesn't have. Keep your eyes on Acapop! Kids, though; they're the next generation of a cappella, and they're getting excellent training from Pentatonix. I expect some great bands to emerge from their community as they mature.

Great reaction. Love this video. I would like to recommend you watching The Wizard of Ahhhhs by Todrick Hall ft Pentatonix. If you've seen the Wizard of Oz, they give tribute to the movie and Judy Garland and the other characters. They don't sing the songs of the movie, however, the ones they sing are appropriate for the whole video. czcams.com/video/QkVeKb2igrg/video.html

You need a microphone because I can’t hear you unless I keep raising the volume and lowering it.
