Innerspeaker is the first album Tame Impala (Kevin Parker) released. Very 60s nostalgic and psychedelic, I highly recommend you check it out, hardly any of the electronic beats and music he would later start making. ✌

Hey Mazzy, great list, well done! Thought I add a few things hopefully for your benefit along with your viewers.
Firstly, mentioning the late, great David Roback, the first Rain Parade album Emergency Third Rail Power trip and the Opal album Happy Nightmare Baby absolutely top psych records.
A couple of bands that appeared on the Elephant 6 label, Olivia Tremor Control 'Dusk At Cubist Castle' and 'Black Foliage' excellent psych records and their label mates Apples in Stereo with 'Tone Soul Evolution' and 'Her Wallpaper Reverie' which I'm sure you'll love.
On a more rock/ psych theme an album that I thought was simply amazing was Dead Heavens 'Whatever Witch You Are' from Walter Schreifels a guy who came out of the punk/ hardcore scene but has experimented with all kinds of music, I'm sure you'll love this one.

"I'm In Your Mind Fuzz" by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard is one of my favorite (psych) albums of all time. KGATLW also have an album coming out next week that is said to be melodic psych called "Butterfly 3000". Also, "Sun Structures" by Temples is amazing. Anything by The Babe Rainbow or The Murlocs. Australia is where the good psych is coming from - and Thee Oh Sees from California (by way of Rhode Island - my lil' state).

My favorite video you've done so far Mazzy.... Obviously hits my age (Gen X Born 1971) perfectly. Love that you kicked it off with Dukes into XTC. Early Echo is definitely Psych... Nice call on World Party too! Damn Karl Wallinger is a beast. I am a bit surprised I didn't see any bands from the Elephant 6 Collective (Apples in Stereo, Olivia Tremor Control, etc) get a mention. Another great vid Mazzy. I would also add Prince to the list of Karl Wallinger's (World Party) influences - saw them do a storming cover of Pop Life in concert. Terrific band, and KW sprinkled gold dust over The Waterboys finest 2 albums also. Would also probably add Camper Van Beethoven's third album to your list - seriously trippy in parts, as well as a lot of the stuff they recorded with Eugene Chadbourne. Take care.

Allah-Las, The Growlers - surf-y psychedelics. The Black Angels (oh man the drone is epic), Black Mountain especially the first album. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. From the mid to late 80s garage psychedelic from Pittsburgh I think - Plasticland were pretty groovy. - So many more I could list - would have to dredge the collection but I hope you either have already or will get a chance to check some of this stuffs from off the top of my head.

enjoyed the show thanks...from what i recall, a lot of the bands back in the day could be far more psychedelic in their live performances than their studio albums...ccr being one example...another thing...the psychedelic scene made it its way up into canada from california...it was everywhere on the west coast of north america in the 60's and early 70's...that vibe still persists today to some degree...black mountain from vancouver is a recent example...

Great list, and thanks for mentioning XTC and the Dukes right off the bat. Most of these I haven't heard, so there's lots of homework (the fun kind) here for me. Have you heard the Avalanches album "Wildflower?" I think they've described it as a psychedelic road-trip through Australia. Lots of samples, but very artfully reimagined.

  • @kathleenbridgestreet4092

Great video. A little surprised Robyn Hitchcock didn't make your list, especially given your take on psychedelia and perhaps something from the shoegazer types, like Ride's Nowhere, which I've always thought very psychedelic. Overall really good and informative though. I'm with some of the youngin's on here commenting that King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and The Oh Sees could be included, but they both put albums out so fast that it's near impossible to have the time to settle on a favorite. Just a thought on a segment, seventies psychedlia-prog would be cool. I find things like Larks Toungues in Aspic by King Crimson, 801 Live, Pink Floyd's Meddle amongst the most lysergic creations of any era... Just a thought.

I really enjoy your channel, Mazzy, and this is a spiffing edition.
Going to pick you up on a few things, but please take this in the spirit of music lovers sharing info.
First off, thanks for The Sadies. They remind me of Beachwood Sparks on speed. (Not a bad thing)
They were the only band I was not familiar with.
    So …
You picked up a Tame Impala record (Currents) when you were talking about Caribou.
And staying with Caribou, Our Love was mid-career, not the beginning.
Their early stuff, and Manitoba before them, were also neo-psychedelia - probably more so.
Primal Scream became increasingly psychedelic. The jangle pop of Sonic Flower Groove (and its eponymous follow up) was dwarfed by Screamadelica.
And Vanishing Point (the clue is in both the album names) went as far as was inhumanly possible.
Julian Cope’s Peggy Suicide was the first in a trilogy of psychedelic krautrock albums. Peggy Suicide, as you pointed out, is a masterpiece, but the follow up, Jehovahkill is more psychedelic, and the track listing is arranged to follow the psychedelic experience.
On that note, Fried (the clue’s in the name) is a better example of Cope’s early solo explorations than Saint Julian (also a great album). Only an opinion, granted - but the post refers specifically to neo-psychedelia, so I sense my comment is justified.
You may have left the UK before the Stone Roses swansong, Second Coming was re-appraised as a stone-cold classic.
Second Coming is now viewed as a worthy follow up. I personally (personally) think it’s better.
If you like Ripley Johnson, his band Moon Duo make lovely psychedelia.
Great call on Stereolab. For me, though, Sound Dust is probably their most psychedelic. Certainly more so than Cobra and Dots and Loops.
Nitpicking - Mazzy Star/Hope Sandoval is narcotic, not psychedelic. Fantastic, sure, but not necessarily psychedelic.
Anyway, I really like your channel.

There was quite a strong psych influence on the eighties underground scene in OZ, bands like the Church had a strong psych element, also the Hoodoo Gurus, though they were more swampy rock ,the Lime Spiders, the Moffs, Tyrnaround, the Bo Weevils ,the Gas babies, the Inner sleeves, even bands like Shower scene from Psycho , and the Olympic sideburns had a bit of psych, a great era for live music here in OZ

Great list Mazzy. Has sent me back to Mutations for the first time in too long. Some acts I was half expecting you to include were The Soft Boys - so out of place in its Syd Barrett psych at the start of the 80s, Spacemen 3 - hugely influential on all that came since in this genre, and current, ridiculously prolific & varied acts like Thee Oh Sees/OSees/etc & Ty Segall. Interestingly, I believe Super Furry Animals’ quadrophonic system had previously belonged to Pink Floyd - at least that’s what they claimed at the time!

Enjoyed your list Massy. First Psychedelic Furs album! Lyrically, musically, atmospheric, intense. It outdoes quite a few psych albums from the 60s, in my view.I Never got further than Julian Cope's "World Shut Your Mouth" and "Fried" albums, both of which I love. But I'll have to check out the one's you recommend. Since you mention Green on Red, I wonder if you like, Tim Presley's band Darker My Love, the album I have in mind is "Alive As You Are" And finally my favorite post-90s psych band by far is Broadcast! Frequently United States of America (band) inspired. More psychedelic as they went, entering into the realm of "hauntology" toward the end. Recommended!

This is a tough one, we all have our own ideas and by god ours are right. Nice to see Caribou, really liked that album. Red House Painters, I always found them kind of slow and depressing and not psych but we all hear something different. World Party of course is a personal favorite. I think Galaxie 500, maybe Luna, Spacemen 3, Fuzztones, my god such a list. Green On Red is another personal favorite group. I did a 80s Left of The Dial last year countdown which covered so many of these great bands. I really never got into 60s psych but man I love the 80s version. Sadies, great. _La Femme - Cool Colorado_ is fun.
_La Femme - Vagues_ is deep and dreamy
Australian geniuses _The Avalanches Saturday Night Inside Out_ sounds like an old Timothy Leary spoken word record.
_Phaeleh - Afterglow feat Soundmouse_ from around 2010 is more electronica, but this cut is amazing. And the lyrics remind me of the inner game while on psychedelics.
_The Graham Situation - Sun's Coming Up_ a Tame Impala cut . . . very reverbie.

This is a great topic Mazzy. I had been thinking about something similar and I would also start Modern Psych at 1980. Your opinions of course so I won't say you "missed" anything but ha...as Jon says...many corrections to be made here. Won't give you grief on the Caribou or Verve but those are worthy inclusions. Key bands for me...Spacemen 3 / Spiritualized, Flying Saucer Attack, Olivia Tremor Control (yes to Elephant 6), Moon Duo (another Ripley Johnson project), Oneida, Acid Mothers Temple, White Fence and most importantly Broadcast. A huge band for me. Tame Impala's first 2 albums are incredible, Lonerism the best. However I absolutely can't stand their albums after. Huge fall from grace to me. But I love this topic! Thanks for your strong endorsement of "Rings Around the World". An Irish co-worker turned me on to SFA about 8 years ago.
Did Rain Parade even come close to making your list? I saw them play at 7th Street Entry in Mpls and I loved "Explosions In The Glass Palace".
I hate to say it but, to me, Bittersweet Symphony always sounded like Sonny and Cher singing on an Enya track.

i heard most of the neo psychedelic albums recommended here and I especially like Brain Jonestown Massacre's two recommended albums and a few others too. This chaotic band is surprisingly one of the most prolific and innovative too- 60s psychedelia, Dylan like folk rock. Rickenbacker drenched jangle rock, paisley underground, 80s brit rock, shoegaze, space rock, euro rock and occasional blues . It is like listening to early PF, Late 60s Beatles, Byrds, Stones , Love, Hawkwind, Velvet Underground , Television , Can , Spacemen3 , Jesus& Mary Chain sometimes in the same album
During the Covid time Anton Newcombe of BJM composed ~ 30 songs in 2 months and presented to his fans on CZcams - each song is quite different from other songs and all songs are enveloped in psychedelia of past present and future

Absolutely, the Spaceman 3 albums that I have in my collection are dearly loved by me. Wonderful stuff. Spectrum’s early albums I have only recently discovered and they are fantastic. Great music for those who seek something a little otherworldly. I’ve seen Spiritualized twice, the second time was in Belfast during the “Pure Phase” tour in 1995. They were incredible - and my friends and I were having a psychedelic experience that evening - amazing gig.

I completely agree with most of your psychedelic choices, and I have many of the recordings, myself. I was utterly surprised, however, that you haven't mentioned "The Luck Of Eden Hall" for an absolutely amazing psychedelic pop band! Their mastermind, Greg Curvey, has been putting out albums by that band name since the mid-90's, but the six or so albums that were made between 2009 and 2016 are the most spot-on "neo psychedelic" pop stuff since the Dukes of Stratosphere- and maybe even more originally sincerely late-60's- sounding, since they lack the sense of tribute, parody, or direct quotation in much of that kind of material made by many others. It's as if they were put in suspended animation back in '67 and were woken up in 2009 to resume their psychedelic rock career as if they were just picking up where they left off (they even use actual mellotrons). I highly recommend their "Butterfly Revolutions" (vols. 1, and 2) as a place to start, or the 2016 "Acceleration Of Time" 2-record "concept album".
Mr. Curvey has since moved on, and formed a new, more "jangly", more acoustic-sounding band called "Custard Flux", which has three albums out by now and is pretty psychedelic, too.

Some great choices there man. Check out my album called Cats of Sherman for a recent take on psychedelic rock. I'm based in Seattle area also. You gave me some new bands to check out. Super Furry Animals are one of my favorite artists of the past 25 years or so. Love the XTC/Dukes of Stratosphear albums. Prairie Prince who played on Skylarking played on my album. I'm surprised you didn't include any of the bands from the Elephant 6 collective which fit very much in the psychedelic genre. This includes The Apples in Stereo, Beulah, The Minders, The Olivia Tremor Control, Of Montreal, and Neutral Milk Hotel among others. Well worth checking out. You mentioned The Chapel in San Francisco. My friend Chris von Sneidern was the live sound man there for a while and he is part of the current lineup of The Flamin Groovies. He mixed most of my album and collaborated on a few tracks as well. He's a great artist in his own right in more of a power pop style. Thanks for the video. Check out the book Kaleidoscope Eyes which is all about neo psychedelia. The book is well over 10 years old so it doesn't include the most recent artists, but still a very entertaining read.

Goth never goes away Mazzy. It's very strange. Also, every town in northern England has an ageing Teddy Boy, they were rock'n'roll fans in the 50s. Drainpipe trousers and bootlace ties. Some great choices here. I really like what you call psychedelia. Some I may disagree with, but that's ok. I think, for me, psychedelic music/art has to evoke a sense of another world, just out of focus but right next to our every day world. But then I'm an elderly acid casualty. Good video, cheers, J.

Mazzy you connecting dots on albums I sort of knew but had not really thought about. I will check out a couple of recommendations (i.e. Super Furry Animals) since you recommend stuff I tend too like better than those streaming algorithms achieve. I do love World Party's albums 'Private Revolution' and Goodbye Jumbo (and both albums' environmental theme as in the song you name check 'Ship of Fools'). The two other albums and artists I'd add to this general category are Sparklehorse's 'Dreamt for Light Years in the Belly of a Mountain', and The Amazing's 'Picture You'. Both are favourite albums from the 2000s and seem to me have the spacious melancholic feel of late 60s music.

Hi Mazzy, nice one, thanks... Glad to see you mentioned "Caribou", however the album you showed, Our Love, is not one of his first, it is in fact his penultimate album dating 2014...for the true pinnacle of the psychedelic Caribou experience I would suggest you'd give his first album a spin... The milk of human kindness
as well as the first two albums under his earlier moniker "Manitoba"...
    Start breaking my heart
    Up In Flames
And last but not least, try to grab a copy of "Marino, the videos" , a DVD/CD which includes 16 video clips made for the albums The milk of human kindness and Up in flames, plus four unreleased tracks on the bonus CD... just essential and stunning stuff (released by Leaf, with cat. nr BAY 55DVD)

There's several really excellent Caribou records working backwards from Our Love that you might enjoy. Swim, Andorra, and Milk Of Human Kindness are perhaps even more on the psychedelic pop (or even krautrock) end of the spectrum. Check out the non-album track Boreal Forest Opper for a sort of tranquil, pastoral, almost Tortoise-like experience. Our Love was my first Caribou album too. i picked it up off a clearance CD rack for 7 bucks... and proceeded to listen to it 12 times in a row while I drove around on a foggy peninsula in northern Michigan. It was an immersive, transformative experience.
Interestingly, you held up a Tame Impala record while discussing the "Coachella effect." I get what you're saying. I think Kevin Parker's work is okay but I'm not a fan of his compressed, crushed drum sound. However his work on the self-titled Melody's Echo Chamber record (2012) is quite good and I think you might dig that too - Broadcast and United States Of America vibes.

You missed to many gems: David Roback was in the Rain Parade who released several great early eighties albums (the best one was 'Emergency Third Rail Power Trip'). The Three O'Clock/Salvation Army released records around the same time, by comparison they were less guitar and more keyboard driven. Both bands, Dream Syndicate and The Bangles loaned their members to the Rainy Day "supergroup" album. And then there was The Damned, under the pseudonym Naz Nomad & The Nightmares, with their release "Give Daddy The Knife, Cindy".

Oh, reading the comments and further reccos, I have just thought of one: Kula Shaker's debut K from mid 90s. I enjoyed it at first, got lots of radio play in the UK...but I kinda went off it pretty quickly, the lyrics suddenly seemed kind of silly. Haven't listened to it since that time so dont know how it stands up now, but it definitly fits the psyche criteria. cheers
