They kept talking about how the show hopefully brings LGBTQ+ people comfort and I must say it really did bring me that. I liked this series a lot!

I watched the whole series, the most dramatic part of this series for myself was the sit down dinner-with the only black man in the room..... The intense of that scene came with a historical topic, fight and struggle ..... I lived in S.F during that time and know the feelings of the rage and understand the newfound voices of speaking up of the younger generation- do I agree? I must admit I see bought sides. Unity and division of mainstream gay power is always a undercurrent problem in the LGBTQ community, we fight for equality but refuse to deliver it amongst our own people fairly, to Lesbians, Transgenders, Cisgender and People of color. The mainstream White Gay man want so much validation; “WE DID IT, WE STARTED IT” and they should be saluted and held in our hearts for stepping up and cementing historical change- BUT! you did not do it entirely alone, you were never entirely fair to other people who were not visions or mirrors of yourself. So to think its okay to voice negativity about transgenders and minorities privately at your dinner parties and expecting no rebuttals from a millennial with an equality, learned, fought, freedom of opinion; young black man-that you and myself should respect! Your Pride and feelings of fought freedom- unleashed anger and hate, because the black young man showed backbone and courage by using CORRECTION & Courtesy at your table. Instead of standing corrected by the young black millennial, this man instantly became offensive, and decided to give a history lesson on WHITE GAY HISTORY and in the process excluded, Transgenders, Men of Color, Heterosexual men & women, and others who contributed to the fight & Change of HIV& AIDS. White gay men were attacked hard when HIV/AIDS hit S.F, the spotlight was on them in a horrible negative way- and finally when education hit, minorities got hit, heterosexuals got hit, thats when funding on a national level begin to change. But before then, the Leather community and drag queens were the foundation of change, they were legendary people of grassroot help, and from there we all chipped in and helped. Celebrities, politicians, nurses, doctors, Pastors and almost every person indirectly or directly effected on any aspect of HIV/AIDS got involved and organized. Non- profit HIV & AIDS organizations flourished across the nation and major cities like S.F, NYC, D.C and ATL became havens for men & women seeking the best medical help to keep them alive..... to live. I just wish the writers could have shown more inclusion in that dinner table conversation. The race, sexism, gender bashing, white privilege, and other swept under the rug ugly issues in our communities are long overdue. No one wants to be overlooked for their work and contributions...... and they shouldn’t- but let’s get it right and show truth, that way respect can be delivered equally and fairly. I saw the issue coming before he sat down at the Republican Log Cabin party table, and fact that his boyfriend sat silent! not to speak up! that would be a wake up to a break up call ... I would’ve done a Real Housewives of New Jersey Teresa Giudice table move. I had been meaning to speak on this, excuse me for ranting..... it struck a nerve, and since I lived in San Francisco for 20+ years, I wanted share a first hand view- Mychaeltodd

Jeff Eric Oliver; MaleOrderBride, again using slurs like you put in your response is a problem. When you say my community created rap, you assume I live and partake in the rap world- I don’t, not financially or by listening. Rap music in 2019 is a multi- billion dollar industry that white people have sustained and participate in- it’s not just a sexist, or racist avenue that Africa Americans fund or make an income off. Rap music with insensitive language is horrible and if I could sue the system to censor the Fword and the Nword, I would, if any attorney wants to take on the case, contact me. I come from a Midwest family where the community looked like San Francisco people, my husband is White. The fact remains we are still divided and still lack unity, inclusion and diversity. It’s not three id’s to enter a club or no drag queens allowed anymore, but the atmosphere can still be chilly when service is needed.

@@Mychaeltoddmtr Thank you for your input...but that is an absolute cop-out.
If a white person said: "White people created Rap Music and the Rap Industry" you would have every Black Academic and Music Historian saying: "That is racist! White people are lying and saying they created our music. White people stole every idea. It was created by poor black artists who never got the credit".
You only ever wanna take credit for the GOOD things the black community creates (like jazz or peanut butter) but you never want to own the BAD parts your same community created (slizzurp AND rap music). That is hypocritical. I am white...and I fully admit that the white community has alot of problems and contributed to alot of suffering for ethnic minorities...while I can also admit White People have done alot of good for the world (inventing vaccines, the internet, etc) So, why can't black people like yourself ever admit that the Black Community had done alot of good...but also alot of questionable things that need addressing...like an investigation into the rampant homophobia/sexism in black created Rap Music?

@@MaleOrderBride The idea that you are lecturing to a black man that he needs to stand up is part of the issue. They do stand up but many don't listen. I think about two black trans women murdered within a block of each other less than a month apart in the DC area. The trans community and especially trans women of color did stand up and got about 2 minutes on local news, maybe a paragraph in the local papers. Now if we think that we have the right to lecture them when we don't listen in the first place, then how are we different than some racist using rapper's use of the n-word to explain how blacks are morally inferior?

I wonder if those of us that comment here how disappointed they were are experiencing the similar dynamics that the show tries to explore - 2019 sensitivity must feel very foreign to people who became adult in the 80s or early 90s even. To me, having lived in the Bay my whole adult life as an young adult and having very deep relationships with those who lived through the AIDS crisis, this show was very spot on...

the only great satisfying scene is "the dinner scene" at harrison's house. everything else...., well, at least we have the original to watch. sad!

Books 4, 5, and 6 were pretty dark actually, taking place in the 80s, Mary Ann going yuppy and leaving Brian, Mona dying... I felt the story diverged from the new trilogy of books Armistead wrote and yet the essence of love, diversity, chosen (logical) family and community were still front and centre.

@@graphiquejack Books 4, 5 and 6 is where I began to utterly despise May Ann. That said, the books at that point were doing a great job of depicting the time period and even Mary Ann's transformation into a pretty unlikable creature was in harmony with the times.

Yes!! Thank you for this comment! I am tired of Black People acting like they have a monopoly on "What it feels like to dislike your skin color".
The multi-million dollar Tanning Industry exploits White People only! It creates advertizing shaming White People who have pale skin. Telling them they only look sexy and healthy if they have a tan or buy tanning products. We also experience discrimination and self-hate based on the color of our skin...but Black People refuse to acknowledge this..
