  • Inspired by the books of Armistead Maupin, the new Netflix limited series, "Tales of the City," begins a new chapter in the beloved story. Mary Ann (Laura Linney) returns to present-day San Francisco and is reunited with her daughter Shawna (Ellen Page) and ex-husband Brian (Paul Gross), twenty years after leaving them behind to pursue her career. Fleeing the midlife crisis that her picture-perfect Connecticut life created, Mary Ann is quickly drawn back into the orbit of Anna Madrigal (Olympia Dukakis), her chosen family and a new generation of queer young residents living at 28 Barbary Lane. Linney, Page, Alan Poul, Zosia Mamet, Charlie Barnett and showrunner Lauren Morelli Joined BUILD.

I embarrassed for the interviewer not really know about the story. The original series were so groundbreaking and really lay the foundation on the new series. So many little things reminded us how it all started like Mary Ann dragging her blue suitcase around the city or Mouse’s 30 list and so many others. It’s a shame this interview just fell flat but luckily the cast and crew gave him slight shade in between. ;)

I was an avid fan of the original writings of Armistead in the SF newspaper and honored to be a character role in the 1993 production.
I was able to have a great side conversation with Laura a few times during and afterwards at other functions.
I lived in SF Bay Area all my life and lost so many friends and lovers over the years from that horrible disease HIV/AIDS.
I worked for 1 of many book stores as the Assistant Manager in the Castro in the late 1980s and have a complete set of Tales of the City books that are all signed by Mr. Maupin.
I am happy to see the next phase of Armistead's story coming to the 2019 San Francisco that has changed so much.
I cried many times in this newer series and Laughed at the similarities of the original characters coming back to show how people grow from their experiences.
As an alum of the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus, we had added Michael Toliver in our programs as an active singing member for a few concerts in honor of Armistead adding that to his character in the original story.
Well done to Director Alan Poul and Lauren Morelli along with the writing team that kept the story fresh and alive.

Thank God for Laura Linney who is really the anchor of this franchise given it centers around Mary Ann Singleton's arrival in San Francisco, from Cleveland, Ohio. She endured a scheduling nightmare to do the series in the 1990s as her career started to explode with other opportunities. It was jarring when other actors stepped in to play Michael, Brian ... so thankfully, the definitive Mary Ann stuck with it. And was this interviewer really clueless about the first three installments from the 90s?

Mary Ann, Anna and Dee Dee I think are the only characters to have been consistently cast for the whole set of four series. Brian has been played by two actors, Mouse by three. Of the characters now deceased, Connie was always played by Parker Posey, Jon Fielding was played by Bill Campbell, Mother Mucca was played by Jackie Burroughs, Beauchamp Day was played by Thomas Gibson, and Mona and Frannie have been played by two women each.

  • @garyr1949

I loved the original 90's tales of the city. After seeing it I went to the library to read every book I could find by Armistead. I discovered Parker Posey in the original playing the Connie Bradshaw, I love her. I remember wanting to be a tenant at Barberry Lane. I was coming out myself when I first saw the original Tales of the City. However, I've already finished the Netflix series and it was amazing to watch as well. I felt like I was hanging out with old friends all over again. I laughed, cried, and mourned with every one all over again. I highly recommend both the old and new Tales of the City. It's not truly necessary to have seen the original Tales of the City however, it's a great way of being introduced to some very interesting and important fictional literary characters created by Mr. Maupin. Truly amazing and unforgettable.

The fact that the interviewer was not even aware of the 1993 series is beyond embarrassing.
The original series which was an international phenomenon back in 1993 was not only groundbreaking at the time but also had a massive cultural impact riding and colliding with the 70s culture revival which was infusing the world at the time
It also had an emotional impact on many people including myself and brought a sense of wonder about being Gay which hitherto I had not experienced.

I'm glad I wasn't alone in being totally confounded by an interviewer who was apparently given four notes on the show 45 seconds before going on the air. It was truly embarrassing how little effort was made, and how completely devoid of pop culture the producers must be to not have had some inkling that this was a HUGE LGBTQ thing in 1993 and a big part of what made us less invisible to the world and helped accelerate LGBTQ rights, notwithstanding that we're now dealing with homophobes and white supremacists in the White House today. Tales of the City is seminal to the gay experience in America and elsewhere, whether you are aware of it or not because the earlier books encapsulated the experience well and was reflected well in the prior series and so very expertly expanded on the growth of the LGBTQ community in this new iteration. I hope once the interviewer actually watches THIS series, that he will either get hold of the books and/or see the earlier series to see what he was missing all this time.

Tales of the City didn't need to overlap any story. BBC only did the first 3 books of 8 books. All the studio's had to do was pick up where they left off. The later books were years later as the characters had already matured. They could have used the same amazing actors to complete the tales of the city story. But they didn't they dropped that amazing story and substituted it with something you have to pay Netlix for and it is an imposter. Armistead Maupins is a brilliant writer and his work is timeless which means it didn't need to be altered. Read all the books if you want a real story where you fall in love with every character. This original story didn't need a conclusion, it needed to be told in it's original form.

I was okay with the writers creating an alternate universe of sorts. It's a different medium and the writing was extremely faithful to the spirit of Maupin, his love and respect for his characters, and the interweaving stories and happy coincidences that permeate his novels. Most importantly the writers beautifully explored Maupin's core themes of community, "logical" (as opposed to biological) family, and the importance of the truth.

Do you know the history of it? The first one was AMAZING but because of the backlash from the religious right, the second installment was delayed. When it finally got made there wasn’t much money, and some of the cast original cast members weren’t available (Mouse, Mona, etc), and it was filmed in Montreal, but it was STILL amazing!

It’s rare for women to age themselves down (like Ellen Page does in this). Aging yourself up is common for women. They constantly have 20 somethings play mothers and a 40 year old play grandmothers. It’s only now starting to change. Though I still feel there are few women over 35 breaking out as a star with talent playing main characters and with age appropriate partners opposite them.

You cannot rewrite Amestead Maupins work. Ben in the original books was not a POC. And what happened to Moana in England..? This is like rewriting history of these characters. Mouse never said anything negative about Anna being called a woman, and to portray Michael as a person who would look negatively on the trans group is false. Stop fabricating story lines and just read the original 8 books that Amistead wrote. You will see that this could have been done far better.

I read the vanity fair article where Alan Poul said that Olympia Dukakis has paid her dues to play a transgender woman.
