- With this review, I dive into Justin Timberlake's first of two albums from 2013, The 20/20 Experience Pt. 1. The record sets lofty ambitions, but does it reach them? And what can we learn from it?
Do you agree? Do you disagree? Think I missed something? Let me know in the comments!

JT singing the 20/20 songs live with a live band is the best thing ever. That's why I keep coming back to his Tennessee Kids concert on Netflix.
RIGHT IT WAS AMAZING
@@sachamoses9233 Just iconic from beginning to end
The end credit scene = better then Batman v. Superman end credit lol This is an amazing breakdown!
Your analysis of this reminds me of a lot of problems with Oasis' album Be Here Now. It's an album that Noel Gallagher went in to with the mentality of wanting it to sound "fucking huge" and as a result it suffers from songs that are way too long and cluttered production that's weirdly mixed. A great example is the first song "D'You Know What I Mean" which features layers of a dozen+ guitars all mixed down so their quality is very low, yet they're mixed into the middle of the track, creating this strange dissonant feeling that they're simultaneously far away and right in your ear. The muffled guitar tracks also battle against things like the drums which are very clear and mixed to be right in your face, and the bass is super drowned out, creating a strange dissonant feeling when listening. Almost every song also suffers from the same issue as 20/20 with all of them being incredibly long, but not adding anything new, just stretching out the outros
i actually love the 20/20 album, albeit how difficult it is to listen to in one go. like you said, justin's vocals are most of the time the largest reason why i love it. but honestly, i know understand a little bit more why i found it difficult to listen to. HAHA. thank you!
This was really helpful/ educational to watch. In my own mix process, because I'm not trained classically, I communicate with my engineer based on what I feel/ hear in laymen's terms rather than the technical terms for what I'm hearing/ desire to hear. This helped me learn how to speak "the language of production" a little more and also gave me insight to why some albums (because I love listening to whole works straight through if I can) feel exhausting from either not being dynamic enough or just TOO dynamic. I would love it if you would do more close readings again (like with Carly Rae Jepsen) from an engineering/ production perspective, intermingling musical/ lyrical insight. They could be a whole album reading or just a song you're really intrigued by. Just a thought.
Th comedy is great but the video essay is where CZcams is thriving right now for me.
I know you have Examining but I think I mean more of a microscopic lens, in details like this, if you'd like that is.
High hopes you'd do it for Magdalene 🙏🏾
2020 is just like this album...Long and messy.
The 20/20 Experience more like The 2020 Experience
This album (and its sequel) definitely defined a lot of what drove a solid portion of what inspired me musically in college, and I think still does. I've never taken the opportunity to apply hindsight to this, so I deeply appreciate an analysis of the things I pick up on now but could never really articulate. So well said man! I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on Part 2, which maybe sonically and lyrically feels so different and at odds with Part 1. When Timberlake comes out with his next project (which maybe has Lizzo on it based on his Instagram post with them in studio together???) it would be cool to compare / contrast it all, especially since Man of the Woods didn't hit me or inspire me as hard as I thought it was going to musically and emotionally.
Your style is really slick, and you’re making a lot of good points. I think you’ve become one of my favorite music CZcams peeps as of late. I hope to have one of my albums be reviewed on your channel someday. Also, I quote 11:33 whenever I can.
I prefer the end part of mirrors so much
THIS. 100 percent. Justin’s albums (except Justified) are audibly oppressive. Timbaland shoves his foot in each track, and it’s not a good thing. Every sound IS vying for attention, which makes it very busy. I’ve always wondered why I just naturally reach for Justified as opposed to the other ones, and now I see why. It makes me tired. His albums are sonically ambitious and ridiculously layered, but it’s tough to truly enjoy. Thank you for putting this into words.
How do you not have more subscribers? Really enjoy your long form videos.
Great video! Love the amount of effort and research you put into your points here. You obviously really care about this stuff 👌
I've never experienced fatigues hearing it, though I always found it a bit weird how all the sounds were right there at your face. I still love this album anyway.
when you love the second half of every 20/20 song more than the first half 👁👄👁
seriously, the second half of mirror, and yes also the beatboxing ear abbrassive timbaland second half of tunnel vision, are two of my favorite moments on the album
Great job. Love the videos
Thanks!
this video got me to take a chance on Man of the Woods, despite Filthy being. what it is. and it's honestly a new favorite of mine, some of the album tracks bang. thank you, Mic of the Snare!
this video is so underrated + you explained this topic so well!!
This is so awesome
It’s been long enough and nobody’s said it: you should’ve called this video Timbral Ache.
If this album would have been better sequenced and Strawberry Bubblegum would have been cut, we would talk about a pop masterpiece.
Don't Hold The Wall has one of the most hypnotic beat switches ever.
I still love this album but it's hard to get it trough in one listen.
Filthy is a huge guilty pleasure for me, I got super excited when you briefly touched on it. If you happen to have other thoughts on it, I’d love to hear them!
honestly i love the same things you don’t like. i like being overwhelmed by music. just my taste.
Kenny Beats and Alex Tumay said do not side chain your 808s and kicks, this album is a perfect example why
I personally never experience fatigue with Future Sex/Love Sounds, it breezes by. But 1000% get fatigue with 20/20, especially if I listen to both parts back to back it’s EXHAUSTING
That Mic Drop of a last line
(ha, see what I did there? I just did XD )
I love everything about this album. Even the way it is mixed. I guess I’m used to music that’s in your face like that.
fetus mic the snare...
The 20/20 experience is my favourite album of all time. Due to low volume high frequencies I can listen to it all day…
New drinking game, drink everytime mic touches his ears
11:03 this didnt aged well and i can confirm already its the worst year in my life
you said rock your body instead of justified btw
The 20/20 Experience and its even more dreary second part are just the most overlong albums I have heard in the last decade. Pretty much every song overstays its welcome. Try listening to any of the 2 albums freshly clean shaven. By the time you're done, not only will you feel like have you aged twice as fast throughout the entire time, you'll also already have grown some enough stubble for a five o'clock shadow.

Yikes.
