I think if an allergy or intolerance isn't severe, it may be overcome by eating the food.
I used to have mild lactose intolerance. I'd get pretty bad stomach pains anytime I ate dairy. I love milk, though, as well as liking other dairy, like ice cream, so I kept consuming dairy products and just dealing with the pain. Eventually, I stopped getting the pain. I'm in my 50s now, and It's been decades since dairy has caused me any problems. A big glass of cold milk is still one of my favorite things. So glad I suffered through and soldiered on.
A nephew, on the other hand, has a severe nut allergy. His throat closes up if he touches something that someone who touched peanuts has touched. Eating through his allergy ain't an option, sadly.

@@jomidiam I know you wrote this a year ago but Lactose intolerance and a allergy are distinct in quite a few ways. True lactose intolerance is actually caused by lacking or the enzyme being insufficient that our bodies use to digest milk protein and it is potentially more common than lactose tolerance in fact depending on where you are. But a lot of people eventually instead drink enough of it that they seem to have a level of tolerance but it is really simply being expelled often from their body

Lot of people don't understand that, but when the food you are allergic to is something you love it's worth it. Only so long you can go without your favorite food before a chance of death doesn't sound so bad. And of course what you can't have always holds more appeal than it otherwise would. I am not someone who ever “wanted” food allergies, and I spent the majority of my life eating whatever the heck I wanted. However as I progressed into my late 30s and early 40s, I would get increasingly bad menstrual migraines. I mean those suckers were miserable and debilitating. Finally one doctor I went to see suggested that I try an elimination diet to see if the headaches were caused by what I was eating. I tried it for 6 months and it turns out I’m sensitive to dairy, gluten, and red meat. 😫 Once I cut those foods out, the migraines vanished. Trust me, I did NOT want to give those delicious foods up, (cheese is my favorite food in the world) but I just couldn’t cope with those awful headaches anymore. I grew up playing outside and eating a wide variety of healthy food, so I don’t know why my body chose to do this to me, but believe me if I could change it I would.

Here one experience i had with someone faking a food allergy (it was me):
One day in our Spanish class in middle school we had a "fiesta", a food party where students brought food to eat and share with others
I myself brought cold drink to share
Once others started to devour the food a girl took out a cake she baked at home, it was a circular cake filled with blue food colouring frosting.
Just by looking at it I was disgusted to the core however others seems to like it. When the girl said to me why don't I try it, I didn't want to eat such a disgusting cake but i didn't want to hurt her feelings and tell her it looks disgusting, hence I said a lie- "I am sorry i can' try your lovely cake, im allergic to chocolate". The whole class stared at me, I silently sat down and at a slice of pizza in silence for the whole duration of the class.
Man were those some embarrassing times

I work at a coffee shop and this is soooo real! I try to be extremely aware of food allergies bc one of my best friends has a severe one, but even though we’re taught about allergies in training, sooo many people don’t even think about it. For instance, someone might order a breakfast sandwich with no cheese. Our sandwiches are pre-made, so we can take the cheese off, but it will still have touched the rest of it. I always warn people and make sure that’s okay, but every time a coworker has heard me warn someone about that, they’ve later told me something to effect of, “oh, I’ve never thought about telling anyone that.” Thing is, idk if someone asked for no cheese because they don’t like cheese on their breakfast sandwiches, like my wife, or if they don’t want it because they’re lactose intolerant or even have a milk allergy. Even if it WONT *kill* someone, we just established that not eating something for a long period of time can make you have a bad reaction to it. If someone doesn’t have an actual lactose intolerance, but hasn’t had lactose in years anyway, they will essentially have BECOME lactose intolerant now! So why would I take the risk of either seriously endangering someone OR making their day worse by giving them an upset stomach? Just take requests seriously and make the proper arrangements. It’s not that hard to just double check.

I've cut out a lot of my favorite foods, and aside from the occasional longing for some of them, life is a lot better. Sure it's not a problem for people that just claim to be "allergic" but I have celiac, so it's not "just bread" When I go to a restaurant that puts seasonings on their potatoes that do have gluten in it, and the waiter tells me "potatoes don't have gluten in them" I have to kindly explain how seasonings that they used to flavor the potatoes do and therefore I cannot eat it, or when I ask if they have gluten free French fries in a separate fryer and they say "french fries are gluten free" I have to explain to them that if anything battered is in the same oil as my French fries I will get sick. People that use gluten as a fad can be helpful and harmful to people who have a real disease like me. we get lots more products because more people buy gluten free things, but at the same time they don't take it as seriously as I have to and therefore people become miseducated

Thank you. I wish more people understood this kind of thing more often. Fakers make it super hard in life sometimes to get good, genuine service for people with certain mental disorders that are a real disability, but aren't always immediately evident if you don't spend a lot of time around the people with these disorders. A personal example, is being mentally ill. I've met SO many people who despise certain types of disabled people, because they think EVERY person with mental issues that isn't born noticably "slow", is just a faker with self control issues and bad parenting.
As a partially mentally disabled person (I have PTSD, Bi-Polar 1 disorder, chronic general severe anxiety, and a "shcizo-effective" disorder that I'm still trying to figure out with my doctors whether or not comes from being on the autism spectrum or not, on the "high-functioning" end), I can honestly say I have had so many conversations ending in people trying to shame me into feeling bad for faking my disability when I was homeless and begging on the street for food and rent money, because I "looked fine to them", I guess since I wasn't freaking out having an episode all ove the sidewalk and was just sitting quietly with my sign not even waving people down, I must not BE disabled at all. It honestly disgusts me, the amount of dignity and self-admiration with which SO many people will cuss a person out and try to falsely accuse them of being liars and thieves, because they aren't completely retarded or insane by either definition.
But the worse part is, I've known and met a few sorry people who WERE, without a doubt, fakers.
But I have also honestly known far more people who genuinely WERE disabled and couldn't get the help needed and deserve because of all the undeserved discrimination they've faced. But not every person with a mental disability is necessarily dumb, and at times, the case is even quite contrary.
    That's all I'm saying.
A little sympathy or even some empathy can go far, and save a life in more than one way. Like with the chefs and the customers, here in this video.

A few minutes later a "new" salad came out, that didn't have any mushrooms visible. She took a few bites, and came across a mushroom.
The staff had literally just picked the visible mushrooms out of the first salad and sent it back out, they didn't even dig in the salad to get the non-visible mushrooms out.
At that point my sister left, refusing to pay for the meal.

@@quotidianlight I was actually the one who called around to get a lawyer for her, and most of the lawyers I called (once I figured out the right type f lawyer to call) wouldn't even take the case because they all said it wouldn't get a settlement worth the time taken on the suit...
The lawyer I eventually found talked to my sister once, then 4 months later my sister heard back from him basically saying that the check was on the way.
Given that IIRC lawyers take about 1/3 of the winnings, and my sister received $2000, the actual settlement was probably closer to $3000.
My sister was actually lucky that her reaction was as mild as it was, she got treated at the hospital and was mostly fine an hour later, and home the same day (though I think she needed to take some very strong antihistamines for a few days until they were sure all of the allergen cleared out of her system). If she had eaten enough to have a more severe reaction, I'm sure she would have gotten more in the lawsuit.

I really don't feel like it's ANY restaurants responsibility to cater to ANY persons allergies. If you are allergic to a food that can kill you, it's your responsibility to avoid those foods. Which means, preparing your own food, in your own kitchen. Why would you trust a restaurant with your life? Why would a restaurant accept responsibility of completely avoiding your allergy when you could potentially die from the tiniest particle? I'd say you're extremely lucky if you're not asked to just leave when you ask for special treatment like that. I mean, I know people can't help being born with a legitimate allergy. But public places can't accommodate every single medical condition that might afflict a patron. It's mind boggling that people are so entitled these days.

So far if it turns out there is milk in it I just order a different dish then OR I have lactase pills with me that works. I can't imagine that lactose intolerant people makes such a bother for the chefs in the back compared to those with severe allergies. And frying something with a bit of butter in the pan won't give me a reaction, unless they are the type of person that uses ALOT of butter when they cook. And my lactose intolerance is not officially diagnosed. And I don't want to go to a doctor either and chug a glass of milk and spend the next 3 hours in painfull diarrhea LMAO, like I don't even know if doctors even test for lactose intolerance. What are they gonna do? Scoop up my shit from the toilet and be like yeeeees I can see with my eyes that this is in fact diarrhea okay so you weren't lying about being intolerant. XD

As a chef I am not saying that allergies do not exist, my husband could be dead if he eats tomatoes or takes penicillin. There is a chemical in both that he is allergic to and I have seen him ending up in A&E because of it. But I have left the painting industry because the amount of people with fake allergies and trust me there is more than 3 people in this world who play that trick on you. A lot of people are not even aware of where flour is in their food. A common example is mustard, English mustard has wheat in it and yet I have caught customers who say that they are coeliac to the point of death if they even have a grain of flour, eat a cauliflower cheese with English mustard in it. There are also the people who do not tell you of an allergy or a potential allergy and then they b**** wine and complain when they get the food serve to them that they are apparently allergic to. So to reiterate it is not the people who are genuine allergies or intolerances it is the huge amount of people who use it so they can be the centre of attention and or wanting to feel special

In 1985 my allergist found I wasn't allergic to carrots, lemons, oats and plums. So, yeah, I get annoyed by people who say they are allergic to dairy or gluten. These aren't allergies, they are intolerances. The only thing that really makes me sick - corn - but the meats give me inflammations and hollow peppers make me constipated. Many other things do increase the inflammations, but none as badly as the meats in such a short time.

If a customer requests a gluten-free option we always let them know that we don't have the space or necessary tools to guarantee the food will be contaminate free. I guess for people who aren't celiac it's about knowing how much you can tolerate and accepting the consequences. If I have avoided eating glutinous foods for a long stretch I know I can get away with a slice of bread here and there but if I have been eating lots of those foods over the past week I know I could be in for serious pain, possibly ending in a bleeding from the back passage...

I know someone who was recently diagnosed with celiac and she has ordered things she shouldn't before. I asked her if she was going to be okay and she basically said she technically will not be okay, but she will live. But even going further, I got tested once because of digestive issues and I noticed on the results you can test as strongly positive but also as less strongly positive. In other words, as some others have said, not everyone with a genuine gluten intolerance needs to eat from a gluten free kitchen. It is ideal, but not 100% necessary for all sufferers. But your honesty is awesome for the people who have more severe intolerances. And of course, gluten free has become something of a fad because some people mistakenly believe gluten causes weight gain or is just all around harmful.

I am allergic to bees stings and I am constantly told 'everyone is allergic to bee stings' but no your not. I will swell up and need to go to the hospital if I'm stung and you will not. Allergies are serious things so read about it. I don't have a food allergy but my mum is allergic to cold and mayonnaise . She breaks out in hives, has migrains and is feverish in the cold. My brother is allergic to all suncream (we don't know what in it) and also soap.
My mum once went to nandos and ordered a burger but it had mayonnaise in it so she explained her allergy to the waitress so she took it back to the kitchen. She came back out about a minute later and put the plate on the table and walked off. My mum opened the bun and realised she had taken it back in the kitchen and scraped the mayonnaise off the bun and walked straight back out again with it. This was about 2 month ago and I am so glad she noticed because otherwise *she would have died*
safe to say we don't go to nandos anymore.

This is really hard for me as someone with a real food allergy. I'm allergic to peanuts and other tree nuts, and if i ask if i can have no nuts in my food or if my food can come in contact with something with nuts, I have to trust that the restaurant believes me and doesn't brush off my allergy as someone who "just doesn't like nuts." on the contrary, i LOVE peanut butter and spicy peanuts, but i just can't eat them. Those, like your dad, who fake an allergy just because they don't like a certain food put those with real allergies at risk, even if he's not trying to :(

We also organize foods and preparation around avoiding cross contamination.
It makes for a lot of extra work and training, and there is no sure fire way to avoid contamination with allergens, but it is worth it when the risk is so high for some people.
