Actually dogs can have either 4 or 5 toes on their back legs depending on breed. The 5th is called a dew claw, and is much higher up the leg so it doesn't appear in the pawprint. Front paws always have the dew claw, but sometimes it is surgically removed because they are weakly attached, and often will get ripped off.
