    I was 10 years old that time and I cried after this match. Everybody here in Poland was completely surprised by so high defeat. We knew Brazil had a very good team then and we could lose but not by four goals! Paradoxically, the Poles played their best match in the tournament and lost 0:4. Football can be such a cruel game...
    To be honest, Brazil had a brilliant squad. Josimar, Socrates, Careca, Zico, Branco, Alemao... I'm a faithful supporter of Brazilians just since Mexican WC. They should have been the champions in 1986, they had everything what they needed to be the champions. But football can be such a cruel game...

      Yes, it was one of the unluckiest 4 nils I've ever seen. Two penalties correctly given, but Socrates one was almost identical to his one against France that was saved. The keeper almost saved the other penalty, a wonder goal from Josimar and a goal caught on the break. The Brazil side had some great players, but most of them were quite old in '86 and their defence couldn't deal with pace very well.

I watched almost all the games and Poland played a tough match during the first minutes and deserved to open the scoring, but the Brazilian team was very good. @@swkenny It is only with a bit of time and space when the donkeys reveal themselves at the pro level. That's why the likes of Bellerin can get by fine pinging the ball about a slick pitch using the same single technique as training, but with a bit of time and space to make a decision or improvise something, his technique breaks down. Modern players have their "A" technique down, more solidly than the past, but give them a pitch that isn't synthetic snooker table, and they often go to pieces because they only have one technique. And their creative ball striking is far worse in general. Its just an Americanized court sport now, is all - overblown 5-a-side.

      @@shakes.dontknowwhatyergettin I agree with some of what you're saying but let's put it this way... The current top teams of world football let's say a Liverpool, Man City etc, etc would have this great old Brazilian side beaten by the 20 min mark or half time by the latest.
      It's just evolution & it's the same for any sport but I still love watching these old games & appreciate that at their time they were top notch & great to watch, still are actually.

    • @juanestadian8471
      @juanestadian8471 Před 3 lety +8

      I dont think they are more technical. Fitter certainly. But fitness only affects the pace of the game. Even if Brazil had more space to move and pass, you would also have to assume they would be as fit as the opposition. What has changed is the consistency with fouls. For example, Claudio Gentile's performance versus Maradona and Zico would never be tolerated today. He would have been sent off before the end of the half. But back then, as thuggish a performance as it was, it was considered a defensive masterclass. Players now have a lot more protection from the referees

    6:08 Edinho's goal was magnificent. The clearance/outside-of-the-foot pass, Careca's reverse pass, then Edinho's one turn (which takes out two players) and finish. I think this Brazil team was a bit underrated. Maybe not as spectacular as the 1982 team but capable of scoring some great goals and they had a good defence and a great striker.

      I could only snatch glimpses of this match on a stranger's TV set that Monday evening,and the bits I saw looked more one-sided than it was. So I didn't quibble with newspaper reports I read that rightly heaped praise on the Brazilians but were unduly harsh on the Polish side in some of their write-ups. Lato was no longer in the side but Boniek and Smolarek were among five players still there from the 1982 team that went all the way to the semi-finals.
      I was trying to watch every match I could but my dad and stepmum had taken me with them (and my sister may have been there too even though she'd moved out to share digs with a friend the previous summer) to collect a kitten or two from that nice little family house,with its nice tree-happy garden and leafy location,to replace a cat of ours that had died.
      After a few days they named the kitten Clough,after guess who,because they thought his personality had similarities! He had a habit of sitting waiting in front of his food bowls,and sometimes putting his paw on top of your foot in some kind of optimistic attempt to trap it,while fixing you with the eyes. My stepmum's maiden name is Wilkins,and one day before she got home from work my dad spotted one of those transfer speculation (that turned out to go no further than speculation) article headlines in the sports pages of that day's newspaper,cut it out and put it in front of the cats' food bowls. It read "Clough plays waiting game for Wilkins",after a certain ball-throwing England player (at a referee) from Mexico 86.

    • @pbd2849

      I think psychically we broke down afer the first goal. Żmuda and Careca got into the penalty area and colided with eachother but the referee dictated penalty for Brazil and your team felt stronger. It was a key moment of this match. The second goal was a start of the execution of Polish team - so, it was a magnificent Josimar's performance. It's very sad that Poles didn't score any goal in the first half.
      There are three importnant matches against Brazil in our history. The first was our debut match in the World Cup - it was in 1938, we lost 5:6 and our striker Wilimowski scored 4 goals. The second we played in 1974, it was a third place match and we won 1:0. And the third took place in Guadalajara in 1986...

    Poland had been semi finalists in 82 and Boniek was a class striker. I think people forget how good their team was but the opening sequence of this game showed they had the quality, they just lost their steam when Brazil scored. It shows how well England did to beat Poland 3-0 too.
    As for Brazil, I am in two minds as to whether this side is better than the 82 team. It is a tough call. Either way, I actually think that, judging by a performance like this, they were probably better than even the Argentine team who won but perhaps they lacked the consistency Argentina had, and the willingness to use their hands.

    Вот, что любопытно, когда, ещё в юности, смотрел этот матч в рамках ЧМ - 1986, тогда казалось, что бразильцы с лёгкостью, без особых проблем, одолели польскую Сборную. Сейчас, уже почти 35 лет спустя, пересмотрев эту "нарезку" опасных моментов, видится, что поляки играли очень неплохо. А в начале встречи легко могли повести в счёте. И ещё непонятно, тогда, как бы развивались события в этой встрече....
