I'm an Anglican Priest in the Diocese of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island and I get to serve in the Parish of St Margaret of Scotland, in the beautiful city of Halifax, NS, that sits on the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq people.
My pronouns are he/him/his. My theology is primarily Christo-centric - Jesus is at the centre and it is against Him that all values are bounced off. I believe all people are created in the image of God and are children of God and are heirs to the throne of God - no conditions - therefore every single person we meet deserves our love, and respect.

    • @johncronin9540
      @johncronin9540 Před rokem +14

@@PoppaCYS A few points regarding Carter’s Administration. First, he inherited a really tough economic situation, of stagnant growth and inflation. It was called “stagflation” because unlike previous recessions, it was accompanied by inflation, instead of deflation. The causes were complex, but were chiefly due to the Vietnam War (after every US war, historically speaking, the U.S. economy has always undergone a period of inflation), and to two oil shortage crises: 1) in 1973, during the October 1973 War between Israel, and Egypt & Syria; Arab state oil producers enacted an oil embargo against the U.S., and any other nation which offered aid (predominantly military aid) to Israel. 2) in 1978-1979, when the Iranian Revolution took place, and Ayatollah Khomeini came to power.
Now Nixon, Ford and Carter ALL had to face the economic difficulties, and both Nixon and Ford were unable to solve those problems. And while the oil shortage caused by the upheaval in Iran happened after they had left office, they, along with Carter had to face a problematic economy due to inflation and oil shortages. Many people seem to forget the 1973 oil crisis, which led to the rise of OPEC, and its desire to maximize profits by limiting oil exportation from OPEC nations. So it wasn’t just Carter who had to struggle to deal with this.
It also wasn’t Carter’s fault that the Iranian Revolution occurred. The seeds of that revolution actually date back to 1953, when the Eisenhower Administration, somewhat at the behest of the British government, engineered a coup which overthrew the Iranian democratic government under Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh, and installed the Shah not as a constitutional monarch, with limited power, but as an autocratic despotic monarchy, which was deeply unpopular with the Iranian people. That coup was the primary cause of the Iranian Revolution in 1978-79, and US involvement in the coup was WHY the U.S. was labeled “the great Satan” by the Mullahs (who weren’t interested in a Mossadegh type democratic, secular led, government).
Obviously, Carter played no role in that 1953 coup. But it was one of the reasons why the U.S. Embassy was overrun by young revolutionaries, and why the personnel there were taken hostage. The 1953 coup was planned in the U.S. Embassy. The Iranians were very much aware of that fact, though I doubt that most Americans were. This doesn’t justify the taking of hostages, but it does help us understand WHY it happened.
While Carter struggled with domestic policy, he did have two major accomplishments. First, he personally negotiated a lasting peace agreement between Israel and Egypt, which had always been Israel’s biggest military threat, because of the sheer size of its military. That brought some stability, however limited, to the region. Even with subsequent conflicts that Israel was involved with, that peace agreement has lasted to this day.
Second, Carter successfully negotiated the release of every single hostage taken by Iran, albeit too late to win him a second term. Indeed, Carter was still negotiating on the last day of his presidency, up all night on the eve of the Inauguration of Ronald Reagan. But it was Carter, not Reagan, who got those hostages home.
In terms of domestic policy, a lot of the problems stemmed from Carter’s inexperience, especially in dealing with Congress, even though Congress was controlled by the Democratic Party. Carter was very much an outsider, and filled his Administration with outsiders, and thus had no officials who were skilled and experienced in how to get legislation passed through Congress. Carter was also more conservative (especially fiscally conservative) than many members of Congress, and this was the end of the New Deal Coalition which controlled Congress - a coalition between two branches of the Democratic Party- northern liberals and southern conservatives. Carter was somewhere in the middle; he wasn’t a segregationist, but he wasn’t as liberal as the northern wing of his party. This is what caused Senator Edward Kennedy to challenge Carter for the 1980 Democratic Nomination for president, and sitting presidents who face a strong primary challenge are usually weakened as a result.
As a matter of fact, the same thing occurred to Republican President George HW Bush in 1992, when he faced a strong challenge in the primaries by Pat Buchanan, and Bush, like Carter, went on to lose the general election.
So Carter had his flaws, like all men do, but he was also unfortunate in the circumstances he inherited. Had he won re-election in 1980, he would be remembered far differently than he was, for the policies of Paul Volcker, whom Carter appointed to Chair the Federal Reserve, did finally tame inflation, albeit at the cost of a severe recession in the early 1980s. But the economy was finally recovering strongly by 1984, for which Reagan, somewhat unjustly, received all the credit.
One other factor that I’d like to mention is that one other reason for the decade long slump in the US economy in the 1970s was because by that time, Western Europe and Japan had finally recovered from the devastation to their economies and infrastructure caused by World War Two. The US didn’t endure that kind of devastation, and thus had a huge lead in the post-war era, but by the 1970’s other nations were catching up. That might have caused trouble in the US economy, but was actually good for the overall economy of key U.S. allies in Europe and East Asia (Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, especially).

Donald Trump has given them permission to finally live their truth openly and honestly, which didn't amount to even half of it during Reagan/Bush or Bush/Quayle of the 1980s and early 90s. Now with Trump, Evangelicals can be the extremists that they probably always wanted to be.

Thank you for making this video. As a person of color (American Indian), I had long struggled with the history of the church. However, my mom and I have always been devout, Bible studying and believing Christians. While we were sad that the church had never apologized for its past misdeeds, we thought that the modern church would never condone the racist actions of the past. Now that the church is voting for and promoting white supremacist, immigrant hating, anti-Semitic candidates, neither of us feel that there is a place for us in the church 😢 The Bible teaches us to love and care for all of humanity. Why is the church full of hate? Politicians like Marjorie Taylor-Greene are calling themselves Christian nationalists, which actually means Christian white supremacists. (Christian Nationalist is a term from the pro-segregation era!). It feels like the church has doubled down on the racist behavior of it’s past 😢 How are people of color supposed to feel welcome?

Hi Danielle. I was raised Lutheran but have deconstructed my reliance on supernatural beliefs. I’m white, but was fortunate to be able to teach in a public school with many American Indian kids. Thank you for posting your thoughts. The indigenous cultures of some of my ancestors echo in the days of the week in English …The Sun, the Moon, Tiw, Woden, Thor, Fria, Saturn. Whatever your particular heritage, I hope you have opportunities, or create opportunities, to hear their echo. I do hope you find fellowship meaningful to you among good people. I enjoy the CZcams creator “Patrick is A Navajo “ - it’s mostly just goofy stuff from Indian Country. He’s always smiling…you know that resilient smile right…but he has some very real commentary and he likes to feature “Natives doing Cool and Awesome Things” … check it out. Also, have you seen the film “Frozen River”? It’s set at Christmas and deals with some themes you might find especially genuine. It’s not a “feel good” film but it explores redemption between a white mother and an Indian mother …not your usual film. Then there’s “Sami Blood” which explores historical trauma, boarding schools, internal conflicts and cultural appropriation. The Sami, as you may know, are the Reindeer Herders of the Arctic, the indigenous Europeans. They aren’t Elves, but their culture was appropriated into that. Both have Serious adult themes (but not sexy or extreme violence). Anyway, thanks again for posting. What films or CZcams creators do you appreciate?

I agree with much of what was presented in the video. However, I do have a question about your comment. I am curious why is the word Christians in quotes. Is this to denote that they are Christians in name only and not real Christians?
If quotes are being used to denote that they are not real Christians I would caution against this sort of rhetoric. Coming from the agonistic/atheist community I have seen the exact same rhetoric to other those who leave the church, to dismiss legitimate reasons for doing so, and to cast anyone who might disagree as non-Christian. To call these people fake Christians causes one to not self reflect, to not look at their own church and try to see the structures and practices which allow people to fall prey to these ideas so easily. That and it also is a no true Scotsman fallacy ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_true_Scotsman )
Additionally, from what I have seen, everyone has a slightly different idea of what a Christian is, and who would qualify as one. I am willing to bet if you put 5 Christians in a room and asked for a definition, you would end up getting 6 different definitions, and perhaps a few people claiming at least one other is not a true Christian..

Oh, I tried to get into it, but the overwhelming hypocrisy throughout history has made me realize how firmly I can see that even from the beginning it may have all been just another big grift - a way to amass money and power over people by appealing to their better nature, and their worse as well.
When you search history for the roots of the New Testament, it's clear smoke and mirrors. All these people who like to "quote chapter and verse" need to step right back! Bingo on all counts. I was a Republican and an Evangelical in the 1970's through the early 1990's. I knew that the affiliation between the church and politics was going to end disastrously. I could not have imagined then, though, that it would be as bad as it became. I never believed that the church would completely abandon Scripture and Christ for idolatry, sacrilege, and complete ugliness. But it did. Now, when I run across any kind of minister for the first time, I wonder if s/he supported all of that and even supported the insurrection. I wonder if that person is a false prophet and how much cash that person has raked in catering to Trump and his supporters.
The Crusades - even the awfulness related to homes for children and the way in which First Nations were treated were bad enough - but they were long before my time. This far-reaching, encompassing church/political scandal... Well, it is today, right now, and we all - the entire civilized world - has heard the spoken vitriol, the anger, the rage, the hatred, and the chants of the so-called "religious" people. We have seen them, lined up in the Capitol, carrying Nazi flags and Confederate flags, even wearing shirts that read "Six Million (dead Jews) was not enough".
We have read posts online from many of these people - sometimes, posts that would make a sailor blush. We have watched as these same people in Megachurches professed to know the mind of God, who told the leaders that Trump was going to be re-elected. We all watched as some of these same pastors laid hands on Trump and lifted him up, to protect him from what?? Truth? We cannot unsee what we have seen, or unhear what we have heard, or unread what we have read, or unwitness what we have witnessed. So many pretenders. So many charlatans appeared and willingly gave up their Biblical beliefs rather than give up Trump and political power. There is no nadir lower than that.
The people who acceded to these perversities can not ever be believed again. They have destroyed their reputations, and their churches - and a very large part of the Church has been destroyed with it. Who knows what remnants remain? This has been a tragedy for the Church, one of the most significant pillars in our society. Can it be rebuilt within a couple of lifetimes? Who could trust it again? I don't believe that it can be rebuilt in what remains of my lifetime. Where will those without hope go for solace? This destruction almost seems concocted by the Adversary.
I'm so glad that my parents and grandparents were not here to see what has happened to the Church. They would have sat with me in disbelief as one "pastor" after another sold his soul on the political auction block. To call this a "tragedy" would be a deep understatement.

I knew it over 40 decades ago with the advent of Jerry Falwell and Newt Gingrich, really from Ronald Reagan, not to mention the tele-evangelists who always were a con. It has been insidious, incremental, undermining, dismantling all for the sake of raw power. It's been since 1980 that the US has slowly gone downhill, stagnant wages, job losses, fewer opportunities, more hate, and more divisions. All because most humans have this odd need to "follow", you know, like sheep. Maybe that's the problem that needs addressing; if there are no sheep, there would be no religion. Think outside the box, people.

    Dear Rev. Ed:
Your last 5 minutes or so discussing the high price to be paid gave me chills. THANK YOU. Who Trump is was already glaringly evident from the beginning, his entire life's work is his showcase. It was AWESOMELY nightmarish to see all these leaders lay hands on him and claim that God needed a mobster to do His Will. What kind of wizened, twisted, warped god do they worship?: a god who can chose only a criminal to do his will? Jan 6th, the recent anti-constitutional remarks, etc., what other fruit could be expected from all the things that he already had done even before 2015? We already have a gallery packed full of 20th century authoritarian demigods to have learned from. Thank you for your impactful, simple statement.

My wife and I, both of whom have attended church for most of our lives, have stopped going. My wife is a public school teacher *GASP. She has come under a LOT of criticism from people in the church over her 20+ years of teaching. She has been told that "God isn't in schools," as if God leaves her heart every time she walks into the school building. She was told that she is going to hell for teaching in a public school rather than a private, "Christian" school. She was recently personally attacked because she has her PhD - mostly white "Christian" men who are uncomfortable with a woman being more educated and smarter than them. Despite the criticisms, she continues to do what God has called her to do - teach. She has many, many stories of how God has used her to minister to kids and their families. Will be interesting how God sorts this out when we all go to Heaven.

There was a far Right wing agenda intertwined in all if the subject matter. I rebeled by throwing out the stupid workbooks, and taught my kids creative thinking, storytelling, science, geography, math, and encouraged asking questions. My students tested way past their grade level, and I was fired for my efforts to create thinking students. I was told I was "a negative influence on our school." This was during the Reagan years. I had many opportunities to minister the love and compassion of Christ to hundreds of public school kids in the years following.

From the U.S. here and just came across your message. Thanks for your succinct and resounding, truly Christian message. A saying I came across recently by JM Smith, “If you dance with the devil, then you haven’t got a clue, you think you’ll change the devil but the devil changes you.” I know many of my fellow Catholics who voted for their “orange Jesus” and after all the hatred and violence that’s been unleashed, would vote for him again and others in their chosen party. I find it sad and disheartening they aren’t looking at the person. Just the political party and what they stand to gain from it. Your words will be shared with them. It’s how I’ve felt but couldn’t quite express as eloquently and succinctly as you. Many, many thanks. God bless you.

I was very religious until my late teens and I started to discover that the religious leaders around me did not really understand what was in the Bible and could not teach me and at that point I realized that most religious leaders around me were just using religion to get what they wanted. They were not teaching the morals of Jesus. It was then that I turn my back on religion forever and as this has progressed with evangelicals embracing whatever they can to gain power which they can wield over me so they can tell me what to do and what not to do the further they push me from religion and the more they drive me to pull other people out of religion. Some years back I had a very devout religious friend ask for support so she could spread the word of God and I told her she needed to clean up her own house before trying to convert people. She had no idea what I was talking about. This is what I was talking about. Until the vast majority of Christians in the US clean up their own house they are going to continue to see dwindling congregations and maybe even the death of their own religion.

What a beautiful, timely, and necessary message. How anyone who considers himself/herself a Christian could have supported that misogynistic, hate-spewing bully is beyond me. And each time I see pictures from a MAGA rally, I can't help but think of the Nuremburg rallies in Germany of the 1930's ... our priest gave a marvelous definition of "evangelism" a few weeks ago - he said evangelism is not making someone ELSE believe in God, but living in such a way that other can see that YOU believe in God and put your faith and trust in Him. Trump and his so-called evangelistic followers most certainly do not do that. Thank you, Father Trevors - please keep speaking the truth. God bless you and Merry Christmas!
