This movie is so unique and a lot of that comes from the budgetary limitations. I love the way that almost all of the backgrounds at night are totally black and empty - it wasn't a stylistic choice for the most part, they simply couldn't afford to light the entire area... But it creates this effect like they're surrounded by a murky abyss from which anything could emerge without warning. It keeps the tension high but gives the characters a chance to get some nice facetime because there's nothing to distract from their performances.

It's only 3 seasons with 30 episodes I believe, so it wouldn't take them too long to get through it and it would be awesome to see someone else react to this amazing gem of a show. I've only seen one channel do the whole series on CZcams (Sithfurion). Cinema Rules did just the first season and stopped. Can you imagine that? Just when it starts getting good. I was pissed. I don't think this should negate the fact that Ash made gunpowder with his high school science text book, built a functioning gauntlet hand, transformed his car into a steam powered death coaster and orchestrated a successful military campaign against the dead. Thank you for doing it the proper way and starting with the first movie.
This is one of my fav horror movies ever and up to this very day I remember seeing the tv ad for it (well, the announcement that it'll be on tv is what I mean) which didn't really show much... it did show the swing, the car approaching the cabin (with the camera behind) and one of the pov shots and something about the basement... and the announcement that it'll be on tv at 1AM in the morning. I couldn't have been older than 14 at the time so I didn't get to stay up late but... a friend recorded in on vhs so I got to see it a month later :D
Needless to say, it hit really really hard :D
It's amazing that the special effects still hold up to this very day. Not in a "oh this is totally believable way" but more of a "I know this is fake but it still hits heavy" which is the charm of practical effects.
Anyway, sequel is good (and a bit more of a comedy at times), Army of Darkness is also good, so is the 2013 remake and... the tv show which had 3 seasons.

Hello Schmitts!! That was probably the most fun I've had yet watching one of your reactions. Absolutely hilarious. As other people have said, after this it gets more comedic although still with plenty of blood lol. Raimi and company's background when they made films together in high school was always comedies but when they went to make their first feature they chose horror because it horror was cheap to make and was very much rising in popularity at the time. Highly recommend you guys continue with the series including the tv show and the 2013 remake which is very worthwhile. Fun fact about this movie and its grossness, Lucy Lawless (star of Xena) said she saw this when it came out and she thought "the people who made this movie must be the sickest people on the planet" and years later she ended up married to one of them (producer Rob Tapert) and working with them a lot (Tapert and Raimi produced Xena, Spartacus and Ash vs the Evil Dead all of which Lawless is in). And yes, the opening of Evil Dead 2 is a pseudo-remake of the original and the do a similar thing on the 3rd one as well so the continuity with these movies never *quite* lines up exactly but it's ok they're just for fun!

Really, this movie owes so much to Stephen King, who saw it at the Cannes film market and then wrote a review of it. Having a Stephen King quote ("THE MOST FEROCIOUSLY ORIGINAL HORROR FILM OF THE YEAR") on the poster for your low budget indie horror, well... Ka-ching!

Milk and oatmeal ... if you didn't like them before, well, all hope is lost after seeing this movie. Have to say, this low budget film showed so much promise and talent from Sam Raimi, it's actually kind of phenomenal. So many things in Evil Dead are wonderfully clever and unique and cool.
My favorite of the trilogy is 2 because it is so cartoony and fun. But a warning to newbies to these flicks: Evil Dead 2 kind of starts with a recap of the 1981 film but they had to film it new because they didn't have access to the original movie for some reason. So, some viewers thought that it was part of the second movie and not a "previously" sequence. It's hard to explain.
Raimi did some interesting things: Darkman, Oz the Great and Powerful, and more.
I first saw this movie in college in the mid 80s on VHS. I was revolted, LOL. But I saw signs of a director and writer with promise. I enjoy certain things in Evil Dead: Cheryl's demon voice in the cellar is delightfully spooky and unsettling (mimicking Scott: "You're not gonna leave me, _are_ you, Ash?") The musical score is really effective, and kind of poignant at times and scary at others. There are artsy touches peppered in there, like that exterior of the cabin at night with the full moon which becomes obscured with a dark liquid that blossoms over the sphere.
Super reaction here, loads of fun to watch you two flinching and laughing and jumping. 😄
