You probably already found one but I had the exact same concern as your husband did, and I found a pretty amazing solution. I ended up with a Ferragamo bi-fold money clip wallet. It removed 1 or 2 layers of leather in comparison to traditional bi-fold's so it is a lot less bulky, got that about 3 years ago and still using it daily.
If my husband shared 25% of your bag enthusiasm, he would understand me much better why I used his credit card that totaled to 3000 USD just for 3 bags this year lol

Just bought the black one today and I love it so far.
The card case wallet I can get 12 cards double stacked both sides plus 10 bills folded but I like this card case zipper thingy too. Sold!
