      just practice breath holding and free diving for a bit, and you will have no trouble with this. the hardest part in holding your breath is fighting breathing reflexes. with no physical conditioning, just practice, you can easily get to 60-90s of breath holding.
      working on how you control your buoyancy by emptying your lungs is also a nice workout, just empty your lungs slowly until the point where you sink naturally. practice this a few time, then fill and empty your lungs at that point to get into a nice position at the bottom of the pool (cliche lotus stance, laying on your belly, etc), and relax, learn to be at ease without breathing, enjoy those 30 seconds of silence and relaxation, and when you have to breath keep calm and swim up.
      the thing that help the most is to always act relaxed, even when your lungs are burning and you feel the pain from air deprivation. it will train you to keep your composure and breath holding will be a trigger for a relaxed state, in which your heart beat slow, the pain become numb and the small time you can hold your breath for become an eternity.

  • @maxcedergren4958
    @maxcedergren4958 Před 7 lety +525

    The pain isn't actually caused by the air in your ear being squeezed out. The pain comes from your eardrum getting bent and stretched because the water has a higher pressure than your eardrum and compresses the air inside of it, therefore you have to force new air into the middle ear to equalise the pressure.

      Tocinos because the drum is being pushed into your ear by the pressure difference. This leads to pain as an indication that its bad for you.

    Valsalva maneuver. Classic technique for anyone with diving or flight training. A key note here is that you should do it "gently" as mentioned in the video. Blow too hard and you have a good chance of hurting yourself.
    For some (like me), this technique simply doesn't work. Yawning, or just working your jaw around, is far more effective in my experience. There are various methods that people have worked out and if you have issues equalizing pressure in your ears, you should test each one until finding the right one for you.

      @rogue_spirit Před 5 lety +3

      You should start this technique the moment you start going down, don't wait until you feel pain in your eardrums. And never dive while having cold coz the eustachian tube would be blocked so you can't equalize your ears. If nothing works go see a Dr.

    Here is how to do it without closing your nose;
    1. Yawn, and then close/shut your mouth while you're at it.
    2. Instead of inhaling air, like how you would when you naturally yawn, you exhale air (firmly, like how you would breathe slowly).
    3. You will feel like some sort of wind is blowing through your ears. If you feel so, then congrats, you've just learnt how to make bubble come out of your ears when swimming.
    Part 2: Decreasing your ear pressure.
    After you're done swimming, or you're simply just surfacing up, you'll want to decrease the pressure. Here's how.
    1. Repeat the same method used for increasing pressure.
    2. In the middle of the process, suddenly suck all the air you can through your nose.
    3. You'll feel sudden silence. That means the method worked. This could also help you study in silence, since it removes background noises.

She refused to listen, told me to keep doing my diving drills. After the 3rd time diving, crying, I completely ignored her. I refused to swim the rest of the class. I loathed her so much for not caring about me possibly dying. I was 10 years old, an quit soon after. It was hard to learn that my fears were valid, many many years later(no available internet back then)

    As a pilot, this sort of thing applies during emergency descent. You can feel your ears almost "contract" in a way. Usually swallowing over and over for me equalizes the difference. Also, with diving, NEVER go on an aircraft after scuba diving. Wait at least a couple days. Otherwise the nitrogen in your blood will BOIL. Has to be one of the most painful things that anyone could unknowingly do to themselves. Once it starts happening, you are hopelessly trapped in the plane as it climbs higher and higher.
