The Future of Earth: 1000 Years From Now

  • In the last 250 years, humans have drastically and irreversibly transformed the Earth. Greenhouse gases emitted by human industries have changed the planet’s climate, presenting the single greatest threat humanity has ever faced. If humans can cause such incredible damage to the Earth in 250 years, what will our planet look like in 1000 years time?

You did nuclear power a real disservice. It is safely disposed of otherwise we wouldn't be using it. While I get the "nuclear waste barrel" is instantly recognizable, it doesn't look like that at all and conjures images of unsafe disposal which isn't true. It would probably have been better to say "use nano-materials to more efficiently dispose of radioactive waste."
Edit: For those wondering or interested, I'm referring to a video by Kyle Hill titled "We solved nuclear waste decades ago." Give it a watch. It's very informative. And while you're at it, watch his other videos about nuclear power.

Hey, I do not agree 😅:)
Yes it's true the nuclear waste is no threat right now, but.. You probably know about the half time of nuclear waste (?), I think it's impotent to take a clear view on this topic and see the pro and cons.
Yes it's a really big catastrophy when something goes wrong AND the waste will stay for CENTURIES.
And we can not really know what's happening in 50, 100, 200, 800 or even 1000 years.. (hope you don't forget the struggle a few weeks ago when russians were next to the chernobly power plant, and there was shooting...)
      I let that sink 😅
But, Nuclear Power is relatively clean and can be used for long times on missions were you cant get more fuel when you're on the mission (space, mars, deap sea, ect.)
So yeah, I think in the last view month, many people talked about 'the great nuclear power' and I'm like.... Meh, they gonna blow us up, cause safety ranked second, right behind profit 😅🙃👌

For the issue of radioactive waste, the easiest way to solve this would be to switch to a new fuel source such as Thorium. Thoriums waste only stays around for 100 years at most and is far less radioactive, and most of all could be reused again to provide even more power. The thing is this tech already exists but governments refuse to invest the billions or trillions of dollars needed to upgrade and refit their reactors. Instead they are doing the opposite shutting them down and permanently.

Nuclear waste isnt nearly the issue people believe it to be. Most of it is the garments of the workers or the like and is safe to be disposed of regularly after a handful of months. Almost all nuclear waste is inert within a decade and the little bit that isn't is able to be stored so many miles below the surface even the worse earthquakes we have on record wouldn't even be close to a risk to the waste itself.
3 mile island was had no explosion and was completely contained, practically just a pr incident. Even Fukishima has officially claimed 0 lives due to radiation. Only Chernobyl was a true nuclear disaster and it was run by a government that both didnt care and doenst exist any longer, so many safety precisions are in place it is nearly impossible for another disaster to occur and certainly not to the same scale.

    • @zsoltsz2323

The issue with deep-below-storage are not earthquakes but 1) on the short term, underground water. It could carry contamination into sears, rivers, and reservoirs. 2) On the long term, tectonics. In a couple hundred thousand years, "2 miles below" might well turn into an exposed mountaintop.

I firmly believe that looking at what we can become, who we can be, and the better we can do is the right way forward. I think being proud to be human and wanting the best for it's future is the best thing we can do for the planet.
For example, if you see you and everyone around you as filth, then cleaning up trash on the side of the road becomes "just another day". However, if you decide to see yourself as a human who is capable of great things that can do your part, then you see the trash and pick it up. Which makes you feel better about humanity.

It can also be much more efficient than other methods provided you develop the right technologies (1000 years ago we had vikings and now we have people in space and nuclear reactors so I'm sure future scientists will find a way to make really good fusion.)

No. Even if all pollution problems are solved (though a nuclear fusion accident is very hard to prevent) the problem is that the heat energy radiated is just too colossal to be dispersed through space. Pollution through CO2 is actually limited in comparison : burning most carbon would bring back carboniferous conditions as a ceiling though it would be very uncomfortable for humans. But infinite heat being radiated would meet no ceiling.

No - planet Earth will not be a fireball in 1000 years time. That objectively will not happen. Climate change is a real phenomenon. But there is climate change and then there is climate hysteria. This is more an example of the latter. Humans don't impact the environment quite as much as certain people think. Our Earth is highly resilient and has survived protoplanetary collision, the late heavy bombardment, impact with a giant meteorite and multiple ice ages yet life still continues and thrives. Hysteria detracts from solving real issues by making the subject sound nonsensical. It is always best and most important to present facts to avoid spreading harmful disinformation.

People often forget, thermal energy, just dig a hole really deep, stick a metal rod in it, it can heat your house & also water to make it vapor that can turn thurbines & make electricity 24/7

Actually we have about 500 Mill to 1billion years left before the sun runs out of hydrogen and starts to swell up to a red giant and will boil our oceans and burn the planet to a crisp. Earth was born by fire and will die by fire.

I wish people wouldn’t spread anti nuclear propaganda like this, nuclear power plants are very very safe and nuclear waste is not the issue behind nuclear power. The issue is the cost and time limitations of building a plant

    • @epsilon1670
      @epsilon1670 Před rokem

Mainly due to policies in place due to governments afraid of nuclear energy due to the bad rep it has gotten for literally no reason.
If people stopped hiding away from nuclear and we actually developed and rapidly iterated on it we would be so much further ahead than we are now.
It's sad really yet in their infinite delusion they still believe electric cars to be "greener" yet the energy is mainly still coming from coal power plants that charge them. The materials that go into the batteries are not green, the waste due to the batteries not being easily recycled as well as the shipping of all these materials literally back and forth across the world at each stage of the products manufacturing.

Only issue is around 6:30 - nuclear fission uses netrons to split atoms apart, therefore those white particles should either be red or blue and the same size as the other nucleons. But this is just a minor issue, the video was still extremely well animated and incredibly thought provoking
