  • This video accompanies an article in RAILWAY MODELLER magazine in the August 2023 edition. It is about what to do with your model railway layout when you can no longer keep it.
My OO gauge layout the Edge Hey and Strines Railway (model railway) was built for and with my grandchildren and also during lockdown. Due to knee problems I was finding it difficult to get up to the attic, so my family helped me move my workshop down a floor and I started a narrow gauge oo9 project The Harland Light Railway.
I made the sad and difficult decision to take down The EH&SR and RAILWAY MODELLER MAGAZINE asked me to write an article about the options available to me for what I wanted to do with the layout (the August 2023 edition). This short video accompanies the article.

What great model railway! Glad you got to keep part. A lot of great points on what to do with a layout when you can’t keep anymore. Thanks for sharing.

Pleased you found it potentially useful. It is now clear that a lot of people face making the decision about what to do with their model railway, so I thought it might be useful to share my experience.

That was really nice and I have done something similar to that with slow cars and with other big items that we had after all the children this time I totally understand. It’s nice that you were able to part with some of it and I hope your knee as well very well.

Thank you. And yes it isn’t easy, but sometimes you just have to decide to let things go. Space can be important and the knee is healing well thank you.

Thanks. Knee improving daily and new project on the go. It was ok once I made the decision to let some of the EH&SR go!

I have a friend who also had to clear a bedroom so that it could be used as that - instead of a model railway room.
Lack of space is also why I do not have a proper layout, although I am planning /slowly working on some small dioramas that can be stored in large plastic boxes.

That’s why I wrote the article for Railway Modeller Magazine and put together the video. It took me a long time and lots of discussions with model railway friends before I decided what to do. It is a difficult decision because you have put so much time and effort in making it in the first place! Good luck.
