  • One of the first questions people have when considering moving off-grid is, how am I going to go to the bathroom? The answer of course, is a off grid composting toilet. You have many options for a bathroom when moving off-grid. Everything from simple lids that go on top of a 5 gallon bucket, all the way up to $1000+ commercial composting toilets. In this video, I'm going to go over my off grid composting toilet system I've been using for the last 4 1/2 years living off-grid. Composting toilets are such a simple and easy thing to implement when living off-grid. They don't have to be complex, in fact, simply composting toilet systems are much more practical and effective in my opinion. As usual, if you have any questions regarding off-grid composting toilets, leave them in the comment section below.
Here are some of the off-grid composting toilet videos I found useful when I started living off-grid.

I lived off grid for a little over 2 years. Composting with saw dust and the litter used for hamster cages is what I used. Both did good. Another great video full of great information. Lovin that puppy 😊 God bless & take care.

Thank you! I appreciate the kind words. I'm always looking for good composting material. Now that you told me about the litter, I'm going to have my daughter save her litter from her Guinea Pigs and try that!

Another great video. You have helped me better understand how to maintain a composting toilet, once I get off grid. It's really interesting how Nature provides us just about everything we need; it's just a matter of knowing and understanding how to make use of what Nature provides. By the way, there is no way I would pay $1000+ for any toilet.

Thanks Old Hillbilly. I appreciate the comment. And you're right. I'm constantly amazed at how nature will supply and work for us if we just let it!

I've had a Natures Head CT for a few years now - didn't like the price tag but the best choice for me @ the time & my mobility issues. I've only used cocoa coir as medium and 3 /4 weeks to change (totally remove cocoa coir / solids) dump on compost pile. The urine bottle gets emptied every 2 to 3 days. Urine diluted 10 to 1 ratio can be put directly around 🌳 🌲good fertilizer..
I use white vinegar diluted in a spray bottle to spritz after each # one use. Odor control. The wheel tumbler (on NH /CT) is used after each use for solids. That mixes the cocoa coir and Stuff (😅) so No odor no flushing no mess.
For most people a 5 gal bucket, urine deverter seat, medium of choice - all available online - total cost under $100. Oh yes, a few used pallets (free) to make compost bin. However when your solo senior and need total hip replacement as I did that was not an option. Really do like the NH - works great for me.
The bottom line for NO Odor is Do Not Mix solids and liquid. Doing so will give you a "Pit Toilet" aromatherapy.. 😉

Thank you for your insight on the Natures Head composting toilet, I appreciate it. I just have never had that odor problem when mixing liquids and solids. I wonder if it could be because of the different media used?

I'm surprised alot of you Home Steaders don't ( top dress ) your composting toilet or out house with cold ashes from a fire place, wood stove or burn pit.
I learned that trick from grandad 65 years ago.
Just keep a bucket of ashes beside your toilet and when your done....top dress with ashes.
    No smell , no bugs.
Try it, works like a charm.

Good to know about the peatmoss. I had considered trying that out. We actually use wood stove pellets that have been wetted down a little bit to fluff up. Works great and isn't any more expensive than bagged shavings! If there is an odor, it's because a person isn't using enough of the mulch layer.

Thank you for the tip about the wood stove pellets. I had never thought to try them. I see them go on sale after the season quite often. Next time I see them on sale, I'm going to get a bag or two and give them a shot!

@@1acrehomesteader43 they are the same as pellets for horse stalls, but cheaper. So I figured, why not try them. Also, if the bags get wet at the store, they can't be sold as stove pellets, so we watch for them at our local hardware store in the free bin.

In North Carolina it’s illegal to dump a human waste so unless they’re just not bothering you yet I’ve watched lots of your videos and everything seems way easier than North Carolina

Curious what counties and states you have found this allowed. I have been looking in FL and having no luck finding places that don’t require septic. Thank you for the good info 👍.
