  • Trump actually has a philosophy on foreign policy, and its terrifying.

    Donald Trump’s coziness with Vladimir Putin, casual talk of taking Iraq’s oil and abandoning NATO, and muddled messaging on whether he'd deploy American troops to battle ISIS makes it easy to assume that the GOP nominee's foreign policy is a jumbled mishmash of ideas lacking any coherent philosophy.
    That couldn't be more wrong. In fact, a close look at Trump’s public comments leads to a very different conclusion: Trump has a distinct worldview that knits together many of his specific proposals. We can sum it up in a word: transactional.

      Pretty decent, actually. A ton of people around me are brittle right now. At some point I remembered how little anything is as it seems with national elections. In fact, my concern has become less about what Trump will do as president, and more about whether or not people in general can calm down about it. I know bad things could happen, but a lot of times the presidency isn't the exciting thing we think it'll be, for good or for ill.

Not just about Donald (im not saying everything about Donald is wrong or right, both of them have issues), but about some things she assures us she would do. Bernie on the other hand is clean and respected but doesn't have anything too impactful for the American people, and needless to say he looks like he'd die any day now.

I don't know what issues you're looking at, but Bernie changed the conversation this year in a big way.
      Also, I'm just wondering, but don't Republicans like to block any change 'cuz America's the best country in the world or whatever?

    1. You've called Trump an imperialist without justifying why he should be considered one.
    2. Even supposing he is, who is this "We" you speak of? We here at Vox? We who made this video and you the viewer? Or we as Americans? Because a significant number of Americans support Trump's foreign policy.

      That is LITERALLY the definition of Imperialism.

    • @WillyTheComposerOfficial
      @WillyTheComposerOfficial Před 7 lety +5

      Firstly, Merriam Webster defines imperialism as: the policy, practice, or advocacy of extending the power and dominion of a nation especially by direct territorial acquisitions or by gaining indirect control over the political or economic life of other areas; broadly : the extension or imposition of power, authority, or influence.
      Now we as Americans may say we don't like imperialism, but how we behave is quite different. What is manifest destiny? Or the cession of Florida, the Louisiana Purchase, or the annexation of California? What about our occupation of West Germany? What about the proxy wars we fought against Communists, sending our troops to fight and die in foreign civil wars in support of our own economic ideology? Why do we intercede in Middle Eastern wars and don't leave until they establish democracy, our chosen system? Why do we spend more on the military than the next 8 nations combined? Why do we have military bases in dozens of foreign countries, and on every inhabitable continent? Why do we own territories so far away that it's a different time of day there? Hell, why have we even made territorial claims on Antarctica? Because WE ARE IMPERIALISTS, AS WE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN. We left the British Empire as a rejection of the crown, and as show of support for democracy, not to reject imperialism, but to start our own empire. In that vein we took after mother quite well. Donald Trump may be an imperialist, but do you really think Hillary Clinton, someone who spent decades in the American political machine, who as Secretary of State visited more foreign leaders than any previous secretary, doesn't want to impose American power, authority, and influence? Give me a break.

    many complaints about his ideas come from a position of ignorance about alternative constructs of international affairs. The man has the eloquence of an eight year old but some fundamental concepts of his approach to policy are pretty viable. The american defense budget is grossly bloated. Our military regularly commits acts of state funded terrorism throughout the world, manipulating world markets with strongarm politics veiled in soft power. All he is really proposing is to be less hypocritical and more pragmatic about our role in the world. Its an oversimplified understanding of our position as world leader (a position we will break ourselves maintaining) but not necessarily an erroneous one.
    The bulk of our current world policy is based on a double standard under which the US is a force for good worldwide, a liberator, which justifies our frequent employment of violence or the threat of it, while simultaneously deploring any similar behavior in other sovereign states, for example when they make attempts to arm themselves for defense
