I think you should mix the 4x4 technique randomly throughout the snot technique, because the mix of both would give that patchy look of concrete that’s been patched and redone at different times, like a real airport. Too much of both would look too uniform, a mix of both would give it a satisfying and natural looking texture.
Usually in airports you will find the concrete slabs nearby the gates. This is due to the large amounts of ground contact by planes/ground equipment, making it 100x easier to replace a singular tile instead of setting new concrete in the damaged area. If your reading this BrickCrafts, you could also make one of the gates be under construction where some of the tiles would be getting replaced! Just some suggestions!
Thats a better idea than what i was thinking lol, i was just gonna say that since he can’t do the whole thing in the 4x4 plates and it would look weird to do it in just part, that he shouldn’t do it at all. But you’re right about it being more natural if it was just interspersed throughout, and that would probably fix the “cant do it on the yellow lines” problem.
I think that you should mainly avoid any taller-pointing grass pieces for the airfields. Use shorter clover/leaf pieces to imply small bushes or patches of vegetation, and the small clover-like green pieces you used to plant the grass by themselves adds a lot of texture already when used. I've been thinking for a while that you maybe over-use taller grass parts--which makes sense, since they're explicitly 'grass' pieces, after all. But for an airport, silhouette of the ground, as well as a neat and tidy appearance are key.
Definitely, you can add more patches like you did in 4:21 and it itself makes it look like a grass that is short but isn'a a golf course or perfect house grass. basic LEGO structure with this randomness of 1 flat level patches and round pieces with holes make it perfect for short grass in the airfield. If you want you can can use taller grass in the meadows further around the airfield. To be honest I think you could change the grass in historic village as well, as it doesn't make sense in my opinion. I mean, there could be some patches of taller grass behind not used houses or in some corners where residents dont care, but most of it in "used" areas should be somehow short-trimmed - and I dont mean that one guy mowing meadow grass that's half his height - it looks ridiculous :D Tall grass makes sense in forest, meadows, fields, forgotten or distant/unavailable places etc. In parks, squares, lawns or places where people walk there should be only short or middle lenght grass By the way, I love the idea of concrete slabs :D
It is because if the weeds start to get ground, they start to break concrete, and that is an expensive catastrophe in the airfield. So, the smaller is better
Hi, I think the building of the aeroporrt itself deserves to be enlarged, especially if you want to add a train line. In addition it will fill or fill the space. Bravo for your city ^^
It would make sense to let the train run (at least partially) underground. He could connect a wooden plate/box underneath the table in order to create that. Train could come above ground far away from the airport.
I suppose one solution would be to have the rail line go underground at the back of the table, meet up with the terminal building, then loop round to the front of the table before reconnecting with the rest of the rail system. Depending on how complex the train system is, you could split off cargo and freight trains from the passenger trains, and have the passenger trains go into an underground station visible from the front of the table while the other trains go behind the station in a hidden tunnel. Alternatively, if you're not splitting the trains by type, the front of the table could just be a cut-away tunnel section with interesting features and easter eggs.

Maybe switch around the direction of the airfield so that the airport terminal is closer to the visitors and the actual airplanes are further away? This would enable the signs to be facing the viewer, and enable the planes to appear larger than they are
Looks awesome! My suggestion for the grass is to leave it totally empty or maybe just add a few here and there (2 or 3 per area). My thoughts too, it's just far too long as it is. Maybe having a few extra studs, the small round studs, the small round connector studs (whatever these are called) would improve things and give a little dimension and a reason for a lawnmower to be in place
While it is more realistic to have the signs pointed away from visitors, it would look so much better if they were facing the other way. The added color and detail would help break up the otherwise huge runway area.
While it would look better, i think that the realism is more important. Once the airport is finished, some planes around the runway, and lighting effects, people likely won’t think twice about the signs because they will be focused on other things

Why dont you consider turning the airport around? Later on when its all filed, the actual runway part will most likely be the least interesting part of an airport (maybe only 1 plane on there, and a lot of empty space.). It could be very interesting if that lies in the back, so in the front you could see the airport terminals with a crossectioned interior, and the parked airplanes next to it. In the back you would still see the runway, but could easily be seen over the top of the terminal.
Mixing the techniques for concrete looks super nice. Unpopular opinion: you should not add vegetation to what would be super short cut grass on the airport. If you add a fire department to the airport, you should add one of those super ugly blue or green training fuselages you always see in airports.
You could consider maintenance pathways. Also, at our airport, YYZ, they have a falconer and bee keeping. So they need ways to travel around the field. Complicates things, but might help add points of interest. Also, there are usually hangars for maintenance if you didn't want a fire brigade or a did a multiple purpose building.
You should keep the pavement as it was before the 4x4s. And in my opinion lose the grass by the "A" and "B" signs. Where I live the grass is always mowed flat by those signs so to prevent obstruction and I think it's a little too busy by the signs with all the vegetation.
If possible you should have a plane mid take off using some clear line like fishing wire. Also a hot air balloon would be really cool if you are able to hang anything over the city.
For the grass I wonder if there's a trick using different shades of green to simulate the "plaid" patterns left by lawnmowers on a lot of lawns. I think the spikey look could be swapped out for this "plaid" pattern using flat tiles and it would communicate the idea of mowed grass. Right now I'd say it's definitely too bushy. One option I like is using 1x1x1 flat green tiles in the snot technique, one row tilted 45 degrees like a diamond, the next row regular snot method, then just repeat. This causes little triangles to stick up every other row. You can also randomize them to some degree, though they don't stay in very well. Amazing video!! I think you know best and your creative techniques are incredible!
every episode this guy revolutionizes the look you can get with plastic bricks. My opinion is that the 5X5 bricks are much less pleasant to look at than the "SNOT" building technique.🔥
The patches at a real airport are for repairs for things like electrical or plumbing and upgrades to navigation equipment, so they arent random, as Im sure you know. They would be in places you would expect, like near lights, or radar equipment. Something to consider. Also, for realism, dont forget the VOR, marker beacon, and radar equipment that would exist at an airport with a control tower. Maybe a compass rose and wind socks too. I love the whole build so far. It is my favorite lego town/world build.
I liked the way the inset green flower 1x1s looked as grass around the signs around 4:21. I think they would be a good solution to the empty spaces you were worried about with the patchy grass option. They add texture while keeping the signs visible.
I think the 4 x 4 technique looks good. I used to work at an airport until 2 months ago and the older concrete slabs can get pretty uneven. I think that really sells the look of it.
i vote against swapping to the slabs, even though they add a bit more realism, I think keeping the runway consistent in it's building technique looks better
This is looking amazing! Can't wait to see how the trains and roads all connect with the airport. This will look amazing once there are actual planes on it !
As a Lego and Aviation enthusiast, this looks great! However, the simple gate name of ‘1, 2 and 3’ is unrealistic and you can split it between the cargo and passenger terminal as in most remote airports. The patches of grass, however, can be fixed if you raise the hinged sign mechanism by two struts or so, and it’ll give the impression of slightly overgrown when compared to a scaled plane model. Other than that, it looks fantastic!
I think you need an airport hangar. That would really add a lot to the flat landscape space! I feel like no concrete slabs would be best. The lines are really good how they are! The lawnmower story is also perfect!
For the grass use the little green pieces like around 4:20 only to make the textures. Otherwise the grass looks too overgrown. Amazing job making the boring look so cool btw.
I've followed your progress since the third city update and i am so happy to see the city expend so much, with a all the details... like the airport is soooo cool, with all the taxi marking and snot techniques. big 👍 from France
To our Netherland friends: release the Lego bricks to this guy and prioritize delivery so we get more Lego stories! Meanwhile, for the grid, I personally like the original design. You can see the lines in the Lego bricks which create its own grid structure and I feel like it’s a bit cleaner For the grass, why not maybe use a single stud topped with a smooth single stud or use single smooth studs (both options with different colors). You can mix that with the grasses further away from the sign Also for areas people can’t see, why not install strategically placed adjustable mirrors along different parts of the wall so people can see certain elements of the backside of the areas?
Typically the stand areas are look different to the taxiway/runway areas. This is because often bituminous bound materials are used for runways/taxiways (quick and straight forward to repair, although less hard wearing), and regular grid, concrete slabs are used for stands (harder wearing, but take longer to repair!) The disruption can usually be on stand areas, but loosing a runway to repairs for significant time is not ideal! Could also change shade of grey for the runway/taxiway? Many airports you'll notice the runway/taxiway is lighter colour than the stands because concrete typically lighter grey! So I would suggest snot technique for runways/taxiways and stand areas with the 4x4s. Could also break out an area of the 4x4s and have some workmen doing a concrete slab repair (or utility repair!)
Will you also add a big (underground) parking lot? Trainstation could also be underground, in a box/plank you screw to the table from underneath. Also: it is inspiring to watch this. I am far away from doing any of what you do. But it motivates me to try stuff sonce i started building my own street. It now has a busstop and a huge bikestall for the trainstation i will be building.
I think you should use a mix of both ways of laying bricks as well as a mix of light grey and dark grey bricks to add the idea of repair. If you look at San Juan airport I think that it would be a good model of a runway/airfield. For the terminal I think it would be really cool if you based it off of Raleigh/Durham international airport as it looks really cool. For the grass I think a mix of tall grass and short grass is a good idea. I think that your idea of people mowing the grass is awesome! Perhaps add some trash or debris as there is usually some amount of that in the grass. When you move on to the details on the airfield/runway maybe add some fire trucks and other baggage haulers on the ground.
Excellent! I suggest you add a windsock (helps the pilots take off into the wind. ) And also add an extension to the airport-a helicopter landing pad for emergency or touring helicopters!
It's interesting to see all of the details from real airports. Without looking into it, they seem like just big flat areas with lines painted. It's neat to see all the little details that make an airport function, built out of Lego.
One thing that always makes an airport an airport is when there is an area just outside the fence where people watch the planes fly in and out above them
I honestly think just the flat exposed studs look best for the grass, since it would likely all be mowed. Maybe there can be a few sparse patches of tall grass further away like in the corners of the outer fencer or behind the signs since those would be harder to reach
Maybe something that could be added later down the line in that big grass area could be a heli pad, it would be cool to see maybe another pad on top of a big building in the city as well, or maybe for a hospital! I really do think that the lowered grass is also the right decision, but maybe just use less tight groups so that way there is an evenness or uniformity to the grass so that way it looks like it is cut regularly. Maybe also you could add a building in the city that is the company that mows the grass around the moc overall.
the use of those Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with Light Attachment - Thick Ring at 5:16 gave me some inspiration for a train project im working on. its a breakthrough in the design that may allow me to adapt the model to more up to date themes THANKS!
Loving the airport!! Don't forget to put the VASI or PAPI lights, as well as approach lighting for at least one end of the runway. The 4x4 tiles look great.. just randomly add some more throughout. The red area for ground vehicles is usually at each gate, so you could easily make three smaller, rather than one large area. Can't wait to see the aerobridges!
For the field foliage, try using flower 1x1 (ID 6426463) and plant w/ plate 1x1 (ID 6420914). It'll still add detail but it shouldn't be tall enough to start obstructing the signs and lights.
First, the train could arrive one floor above ground level to the airport. That floor could have a lot of glass which allows you to show minifigures walking to the raised walkways onto the larger planes. Secondly, a small hanger for private planes at the end of the smaller runway could allow you to add a lot more details and character to the airport. Thirdly a number of planes flying overhead or in mid takeoff would look really cool!
I like the tiled look, and if you're going for realism, I suggest seeing what aircraft would typically fly in/out of a single entry/exit airfield, to avoid having Boeing 747's, 777's, and other similarly large aircraft on that tiny runway. Also, you should add your best attempt at a ww2 era fighter. Dealers choice, but I'm bias towards the P51 Mustang.
One thing I have had success with is actually buying used Lego pieces. There’s often color variations in the pieces that work really well for showing “organic” wear, and that might just work for the airfield without you having to mix building techniques like you are contemplating.
Awesome job, man! The 4x4 tiles definitely make the airfield look more beat up, but I don't think it's very aesthetically pleasing having it in only one section. Maybe, if you could incorporate them in other areas it wouldn't look so jarringly different. Then again, you're a master at blending the edges between areas!
i still say a clifftop cafe with roof greenery/potted trees and flowers/vines, and serving would add a nice tirered element to the area next to the bridge and square on the top section. a nice transistion from the row of houses to the cliff and stairs. and plazas usually have some form of food serving nearby, so that fits. large glass windows for the first floor with the planned lighting would look cozy i believe as you can see the patrons eating, or string lights hanging from poles for the rooftop serving area.
I found the german version of your channel, and i am a person who is learning german at school its nice for me to watch the german channel so i can learn the language better
I think adding small stop signs on the roadway in opposite directions parallel to the taxiway would be a nice touch especially because at a real airport ground service vehicles need to yield to oncoming aircraft, also a white and black checkered line where the edge of the roadway meets the taxiway would be a nice touch as well.
Hey, maybe you should add someone mowing their lawn, or groundskeeping in a region. It would give a slight little bit of story. I love the build and in general the commitment and time you've given to this. Thank you! It's very inspiring!
You have such nice greenery around your city. I think it is normal for an airport to be more like a golf course than a hay field. You might consider adding green 1x1 round plates with the four leaf parts scattered for a low to the ground texture. Just a few since, again, it is normal for an airport to have an artificial landscape. I like that you have sections with SNOT and sections of 4x4 tiles, it gives an appearance that the concrete has been repaired over time. Consider adding patches of the larger 8x8 tiles or the 8x16 tiles if they exist in light bluish gray. You could also add the older light gray in places for more contrast.
I work at an airport and we keep our grass height between 8-14 inches high. Around our signs is where we cut lower so as not to obscure the signage. I’d also recommend making an Operations vehicle. They have the responsibility of inspecting the airfield for FOD, checking lighting, and any other maintenance item. At some airports they also perform the maintenance. They work with Fire to respond to accidents. They issue NOTAMs on the conditions of the airfield. Also for the signage, you should add the RWY boundary marking to the backside of the Hold Short Sign to show that they are clearing the runway. For references, I’d recommend FAA Advisory Circulars in the 150 series. We have signs and markings and design. Just google AC 150 with the keyword. All kinds of technical info. For example, centerlines are 120’ long with an 80’ gap. Are you going to include Distance Remaining Signs on the RWY? Windsocks? What about an Airport Beacon? Awesome project! Looking forward to seeing this more. I’m sharing this with other airport Ops people as well!
In all that empty space next to the airport you could add a cargo railyard where merchandise gets trannsfered between airplanes and freight trains. When you open your museum, my kid and I will fly from Canada to visit!
One small detail I remember from a reality show about an airline was that they had to remove a fox or pick up some fox poop from the airfield because the foxes would come in at night to lie on the lightboxes because they were warm. So you could have a fox somewhere or a worker who scoops up some poop.
Broooo i love your builds continue your good work. I recommend adding a helipad, fire station(i hv seen then), a plane hanger for storage of planes, and i would really love if you made the terminal a little bigger to actually fill the empty grass, in future you could hang the plane of the celling
I definitely think that you should use the 4x4 tiles they really given authentic concrete look, as well it could be easy to show some cracks or broken concrete that way by using other sizes and shapes of tiles
Making like a large hangar could be cool as well. Perhaps with a private jet stored inside or something! Could go well near that spot you were mentioning the Oil tanks and stuff!
You are a very talented builder. Your mind works in a 3D creative state to foresee how the modifieds will fit together and offer the design you are looking for.
I'd keep the grid studs, and it may be a pain, but you should add some darker grey bricks to areas in the airport to make it look like the asphalt has been patched overtime. It would help break up the vast amount of light grey bricks in the runway. Good job so far, I like the markings on the strip.
I think it's worth adding a helicopter landing pad to the free zone. I’m not sure that they are compatible with an airport in reality, but I think it would be quite appropriate to combine them in a legocity. I also wanted to suggest that maybe you should use a duplo for large-scale projects (for example, for the internal support of mountains and hills), it may be cheaper, but still lego.
Adding a fire station and fuel storage is the best idea since an airport does have those, but also it would be interesting to see how you integrate an ATC tower.
Don't forget to build an ILS for the main landing runway direction. That way you can add a glide slope and localiser antenna to your runway. These are quite prominent and add detail to the otherwise rather flat runway area. The glide slope antenna usually has a tiny red/white support building placed next to it.
Would love to have some kind of abandoned hanger in the big open field. Maybe with an old broken down plane. Would make another point of interest in the airfield and city!
Others suggest turning the airfield around, so that the landing strip is further from the viewers. I'll add that in that case, you could have the terminal sliced in half, so that people can see the whole inside and have an underground train station, as is common in airports.
Personally I like a cleaner more uniform look. Having it be the smaller 4x4 style may look more realistic in some ways, but this is all Lego life not real life. But you have done very well making your own choices, so do what makes you happy. Either way, it's still awesome. 😎😎👍👍
The slabs would be more fitting to its purpose. If one slab cracks, you can easily tear it up and refill it without affecting airport traffic too much 😊
The empty area near the airport should have some hotels, rental car places, maybe a bus station. Other kinds of travel infrastructure that you find near most airports
Civil engineer who works with numerous airports doing design here - love the detail and research you’ve put into the airfield. On the 4x4 versus SNOT - most airfields don’t want the slabs to be so obvious, but much of what you see on the slab lines is joint sealant. Having said that, I really like the 4x4 pattern, so my vote is for it. Also, for the fire building , that’s typically called ARFF (in the US anyways) - Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting. Small detail, but maybe the sign could show that instead of just fire.
I think you should mix the 4x4 technique randomly throughout the snot technique, because the mix of both would give that patchy look of concrete that’s been patched and redone at different times, like a real airport. Too much of both would look too uniform, a mix of both would give it a satisfying and natural looking texture.

Out of all the lego cities on CZcams, this is by far my favourite! Incredible details and building techniques 👏
You could make a helipad by continuing the far apron.
I prefer the snot technique and I am very impressed with all the building and time you put into this amazing city.
seeing this project growing from small to very large motivates me to improve myself
I love how you're teaching how an airport works with this build!
You can see the lines in the Lego bricks which create its own grid structure and I feel like it’s a bit cleaner
For the grass, why not maybe use a single stud topped with a smooth single stud or use single smooth studs (both options with different colors). You can mix that with the grasses further away from the sign
Also for areas people can’t see, why not install strategically placed adjustable mirrors along different parts of the wall so people can see certain elements of the backside of the areas?
Your Lego Technic tutorials are an invaluable resource for enthusiasts.
Maybe you can also add a Solar Power plant around the airport, filling up the empty grass area.
I love how much effort he puts into his lego city good job man❤❤❤
Never seen something this satisfying in my life
3:14 this is just some incredibly impressive lego math!! and the voiceover translating the sign was so perfectly timed too
You could add a viewing section for people to look at the planes arriving and departing
It would be quite cool
Excellent! I suggest you add a windsock (helps the pilots take off into the wind. )
And also add an extension to the airport-a helicopter landing pad for emergency or touring helicopters!
YEAH PROGRESS
Flip the taxiway signs towards the viewers, sure, it’s unrealistic, but they won’t care. It looks better with the signs. Trust me.
I think the plain grass looks fine without all of those stem pieces. Great update!
It's interesting to see all of the details from real airports. Without looking into it, they seem like just big flat areas with lines painted. It's neat to see all the little details that make an airport function, built out of Lego.
Bro when will u post 😶😶
One thing that always makes an airport an airport is when there is an area just outside the fence where people watch the planes fly in and out above them
I honestly think just the flat exposed studs look best for the grass, since it would likely all be mowed. Maybe there can be a few sparse patches of tall grass further away like in the corners of the outer fencer or behind the signs since those would be harder to reach
Next video?
Maybe something that could be added later down the line in that big grass area could be a heli pad, it would be cool to see maybe another pad on top of a big building in the city as well, or maybe for a hospital! I really do think that the lowered grass is also the right decision, but maybe just use less tight groups so that way there is an evenness or uniformity to the grass so that way it looks like it is cut regularly. Maybe also you could add a building in the city that is the company that mows the grass around the moc overall.
the use of those Plate, Modified 1 x 1 with Light Attachment - Thick Ring at 5:16 gave me some inspiration for a train project im working on. its a breakthrough in the design that may allow me to adapt the model to more up to date themes THANKS!
i'm always happy when Brickcrafts uploads 😊
Holy Moses, The airport area is looking really nice!
I'll be honest... I like the 4x4 gray, I'm astounded by how cool this all is. I wish I had a 10th of your level of creativity
i still say a clifftop cafe with roof greenery/potted trees and flowers/vines, and serving would add a nice tirered element to the area next to the bridge and square on the top section.
a nice transistion from the row of houses to the cliff and stairs. and plazas usually have some form of food serving nearby, so that fits.
large glass windows for the first floor with the planned lighting would look cozy i believe as you can see the patrons eating, or string lights hanging from poles for the rooftop serving area.
Airports are huge holy crap
Thank you! It's very inspiring!
amazing
just the space for airfield is just so epic
I really love your attentions to details in making the airport marking realistic
Broooo i love your builds continue your good work. I recommend adding a helipad, fire station(i hv seen then), a plane hanger for storage of planes, and i would really love if you made the terminal a little bigger to actually fill the empty grass, in future you could hang the plane of the celling
you need a aircaraft hanger, one with massive sliding doors!
This looks absolutely amazing!
Mix the 4x4 in randomly, and the grass should be patchier, not full. Airport looks so great!!
You are a very talented builder. Your mind works in a 3D creative state to foresee how the modifieds will fit together and offer the design you are looking for.
Guest experience is more important than how realistic something looks. I would just have the signs face the people.
Choppers are compatible with airports but they have to coordinate their T/O and Landings with ATC so that they don’t collide with fixed wings
You could always raise the sings/lights up just a little bit. I like the idea of a lawnmower person with a partly mowed area
I like the idea of extending it out. Also, this is extremely realistic and as a pilot, I approve!
Don't forget the massive control tower, and hangars, and technical /logistic zones. And airport is a fullfledged city.
Don't forget the PAPI lights and various antennae around the runway. Some security cameras and a place for plane catchers would be nice as well
The slabs would be more fitting to its purpose. If one slab cracks, you can easily tear it up and refill it without affecting airport traffic too much 😊
I started watching from making tram lines , Dealing with the illegal tecnique and now i got here!
The empty area near the airport should have some hotels, rental car places, maybe a bus station. Other kinds of travel infrastructure that you find near most airports
As a huge aviation lover, this looks goood
The 4x4 looks so accurate to an airport, just took a flight today and noticed that exact thing, so I would keep it!
A park with a roller coaster, ferris wheel, bumper car or others would be really cool.
Hugs from Brazil 🇧🇷, sorry if my english was bad 😐
