  • One of the top questions I get asked is 'can I use flowers in epoxy resin' and the answer is yes - as long as they're dried. In this video I show you how to use a selection of pressed dried flowers and leaves to create a variety of different objects including: pendants, earrings, a bookmark, a coaster or window hanging and a wooden tray.
    The one thing to remember when using dried flowers in resin is that they will tend to try and float, so consideration should be given to this when planning your designs.
    Update: I now know the bookmark flowers are called Ammi Majus and can be purchased from various sellers online such as this one at Ali Express www.aliexpress.com/item/32958...

    I have a couple of questions. 1. When you say let the resin firm before making a dome...how long would that be roughly? 2. I always thought you put your items in upside down in the molds (like the coaster mold), but you do it the opposite. Is there really no need to do it backwards? Thanks. I love watching your channel

    • @resinAce
      @resinAce  Před 4 lety

      Hi, it really depends on the resin, but with my art resin I don't have too wait too long - 10 minutes maybe. There is more than one way to achieve your end result. If you use the mold upside down you get a nice flat surface on the top but you still have to deal with that sharp raised edge that will then be on the bottom. I just find it easier to arrange the composition the right way up in the mold.

  • @Mery15ify
    @Mery15ify Před 4 lety

    Hey Ace! Love your channel :) I have a question - is it possible to put flowers into resin if they have first been dried in silica gel? Will that still keep them looking fresh rather than dried and pressed?
    I'm guessing it's not a good idea to put fresh flowers in resin?
    Cheers!

    • @resinAce
      @resinAce  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi, thank you 😊 The main issue is to get rid of all the moisture in the flowers, so never use fresh flowers. Moisture will cause numerous problems: it can affect the cure of the resin, causing a white bloom on the surface. The moisture can vaporise as the resin heats up while it cures and cause it to crack. Fresh flowers can yellow pretty quickly in resin, and will eventually turn brown as they rot. It doesn't matter how you dry the flowers, just as long as you get that moisture out. ♠

    Ack, so confused... it's not Friday! 😂 I love all of them, but the cabochon and the bookmark were my favourites, I think. The coaster was gorgeous, especially the ladybird and having it in multiple layers for some depth... but yeah, that bookmark. 😍 I wonder what was in the flower and resin that caused the colour change... maybe it's a pH thing? Curious! Love them all, though, as always. Thanks for sharing (though I kind of miss the screaming bubbles now LOL).

      The one thing I've always wanted to get was a UV lamp and resin kit with the cabochon moulds, and dried flowers with a little glitter, bi would experiment using black pigment, with silver glitter, in the resin and a center flower, SPACE FLOWER!!! Ive often wondered how it would work out,, I would love to see you do something like that, buy using color pigments and glitter with dried flowers , and anything else that would work with it, I never got round to buying a resin kit ,but might be able to at a later time if poss, take care stay safe, stay cool stay awesome 🐯🐢👍🌹🍁🌷🐞

    beautiful. I have bookmark mould. will artificial flowers work - small ones ?
    pls where is the link to dried pressed flower on aliexpress ?

    • @resinAce
      @resinAce  Před 4 lety +2

      Hi, here is the Ali link www.aliexpress.com/item/33005262830.html if the artificial flowers are made from paper then they are difficult to use in resin. If you search out my butterfly cube video I used a paper daisy, which I painted in acrylic paint first as the paper petals otherwise turned clear in the resin. If the flowers are foam they can be used as long as you can hold them in place, as they will float. They can also release tiny bubbles.

      Some I dried myself, others were purchased in packs off ebay. To dry my own I just press them between sheets of paper under heavy books.

    ResinAce I need your help. I bought a two-part sphere mold and tried to make something. The problem I had was trying to get the bubbles out of the top part of the mold. The lighter would only get the bubbles out of the small hole on top and when I demolded it there were bubbles in the top half of the sphere. How do you do it?

    • @resinAce
      @resinAce  Před 4 lety

      I think the key there is to make sure your resin is as bubble-free as possible before you pour it into the mould. Another thing to try is to half fill the sphere, then put the end of the lighter over the hole and give it just one quick click. You don't need the flame to make contact with the resin, just burn up the oxygen inside the mould and that will break the surface tension of the resin and pop the bubbles. Then fill it a bit more and do it again, and so on. Don't let the bubbles defeat you! ♠

    Did you dry your own flowers. If so how do you keep the colour so well.

    • @resinAce
      @resinAce  Před 4 lety

      I dried my own leaves but the flowers were purchased. Some of the flowers appeared to have been dyed, others were natural. I believe they need to be kept dark and air-tight to help avoid colour loss.

    • @resinAce

      They will turn brown and rot. It can take weeks to fully dry leaves and flowers. Look up an article on flower pressing.

    Would you ever be interested in telling us some of the things that you use to make your pieces. For instants the white paper I know it can’t be paper because it would stick what did you use that you were able to peel it off?? Another one that I would love to know is where you get your plastic that you cut up and make molds with I have tried using plastic from things around my house and inevitably it does not come off of the resin once it’s cured?? What is the plastic that you cut and make boxes with?

To view the captions on a touch screen device, simply press the 3 dots in the corner of the video whilst it is playing, and you can switch them on from there.
