‘I’m gobsmacked’: Pauline Hanson and Penny Wong face off over net zero targets

  • One Nation Senator Pauline Hanson and Foreign Minister Penny Wong have had a fiery exchange over the meaning and cost of net zero.
In Wednesday’s Senate Question Time, Ms Hanson grilled the Foreign Minister about what net zero meant in “layman’s terms”, and how much it would cost Australian taxpayers.
“I’m not sure how to explain it other than that it means net zero,” Ms Wong replied.
“I think we all understand what net emissions means.”
Ms Hanson said she was “gobsmacked” by Ms Wong’s lack of response to the question.

As an Australian citizen this is what I see watching this. Pauline Hanson asking simple and to the point questions then Penny Wong spewing absolute political nonsense as a means to avoid any meaningful answer. It’s disgusting how arrogant and smug our “representatives” have become.

Wong should explain how much is going to cost the taxpayers and it is really going to achieve the net zero emissions by shutting down the mining , coals power stations and gas pipelines. Do the Labor/greens and teal will achieve the net zero emissions where China, India and other countries are doing nothing.

They have bantered around acronyms and memes for so long without bothering to understand them that when questioned Penny Wong looked stunned and gabbled nonsense. With their faith in renewables (whatever they are) and ignorance of anything nuclear, our chances of ever developing small modular nuclear power plants will never get passed by the ALP. We need reliable 24/7 electricity generation along our national grid; and we need it to be planned now.

Hi Pauline, It means sending even more jobs overseas so our targets are reached while other countries emissions continue to grow at our expense. It also means far less money being available for public benefit, hospitals and schools and that is just for starters. The working poor will become the working homeless. Electricity will become a luxury few can afford. Food shortages are definitely going to be a constant problem. Life expectancy will go down. Birth deaths will rise, and the benefits to Australians will be a reduction in co2 of .00000000000012 per cent to the atmosphere. Which will be offset by other emerging nations. That should make all Australians feel good. That they have suffered and brought down an entire nation for the benefit of all mankind. Yeah right.

They are either simpletons and are afflicted with the Climate Delusion or they are duplicitous and are colluding with it. Either way, popular delusions are dangerous and can lead to economic ruin, war and genocide.

As a European, there's been a line fed about Pauline Hanson - down through the years - by the media - that she's a rabble-rouser and anti-migrant - but whether not I'd vote for her or her party (if I had the "vote down under") - Ms Hanson seems to be doing a pretty good job here with these relevant questions - I was going to say she's trying to "smoke out" the Foreign Minister on the issues concerned but - of course - that would mean Ms Hanson was responsible for "harmful emissions" - and we can't have those any more can we !!!

Net zero will be the bank account after buying so-called renewable energy providers (that don't provide enough, ask Europe) and not selling any coal.

Great answer. Net zero is the money we will have in our bank accounts after the politicians have messed up the national energy supply trying to go green.

I do not trust a single word coming out of Penny Wong's mouth. Appears to me to be a slimy politician of the highest order.

Here is a fact!! AUSTRALIA IS ALREADY AT NET ZERO!! In fact due to the size of our country and our relatively small population, our greenhouse gases are already offset by the plants and other natural things that absorb Carbon Dioxide and put out Oxygen!!
This is something that never seems to be taken into account!! Yes Australia emits a lot of greenhouse gases per person, but it's easily absorbed and converted by our plants!! We have no need to follow the policies of other more densely populated countries!!
