  • The Art of Acting - Eden Sher in "The Middle" (Episode#1)
I decided to start this series of videos where I point out a single moment or an entire scene on which I think an actor absolutely excels. Be it in a film or television show. I think actors can make or break a good script sometimes and I’m a sucker for a good performance. Because I teach acting and work with actors professionally I tend to notice subtleties that can, sometimes, go unnoticed and my goal is to point those out and try and dissect a performance so people can start appreciating and understanding even more why a performance is good.

The Middle is not an average show. It has heart and doesn't deserve to be casually dismissed by you.

I do not think of this show as average at all. Every episode was a little exquisite pearl. every actor was fantastic.

Best line ever: When Frankie woke up at two in the morning, realizing they had forgotten Sue's birthday. She rounded up the rest of the family and broke into Sue's room to sing "Happy Birthday." As she blinked her eyes and started to smile, Sue said, "You mean I cried myself to sleep for nothing?"

She is very expressive with her scenes. A lot of young actors just don't show expression very well, which is IMO a very big part of acting. She does a good job of always letting us know how her character is feeling at any given moment, rather she says any words or not. She also does a good job of using her arms and body language without going overboard. I have seen almost every episode of the Middle, and I honestly can't remember one episode where her performance didn't outshine the rest of the cast(and there are some pretty talented and experienced actors on that show).
The only problem I can see her running into is that she is Sue Heck. By that I mean, she might get type casted a lot in the future to where almost every character she gets offered might be similar to Sue Heck. Which would be a shame, because I feel she has the ability and range to pull off a wide variety of roles.

+JDeppFan2272 You are absolutely right. She might face that problem in the future. Let's hope she doesn't. I agree with you 100%. She has the ability and range to do anything.

I'm not sure I can add too much to that, other than the fact that she does steal the show, in the same way Henry Winkler did on "Happy Days," Jaleel White did on "Family Matters," and Annelise van der Pol did on "That's So Raven."

Do not underestimate "The Middle". Any lower class family struggling to make ends meet and raise children will support the condition that this series hits the mark. So many small details show the level of understanding the script writers have of the common US family.

I also watch the show mainly because of Eden Sher! To say that her role in The Middle has changed my life is an understatement because thanks to her optimism, I am starting to look at life in a more positive manner, and I've tried EVERYTHING to do so like looking for positive quotes, go to a psychologist and psychiatrist, not to mention counselling sessions at school. But it turns out her character has made a much bigger impact on controlling my social anxiety. I wish I could meet her and thank her in person because she saved my life. People without anxiety disorders would think I'm exaggerating but I don't really care, I am not ashamed to express my feelings and I hope other people suffering from any kind of anxiety watch this series and Sue Heck and be amazed of her positivity! :)

It has been two years, but here I am again, Elise. And it is once more a long essay.
Its good to read that you have found a role-model in Sue, so has my daughter.
Despite not being the strongest person - both in physical and mental terms - she has grown so very very much in these past two years, mirroring herself on Sue Sue (as she likes to call the character).
In school, during parent/teacher meetings, I make it a point to "educate" others present in the educational goodness that is to be found in every episode of 'The Middle.'
And yes, I even advice teachers - who studied long and hard to be able to give both care and education to my kids and many (oh, so many) others that are considered 'below par' for our current society.
I'm starting to have a real problem with "in- DUH - viduals' who refuse to see that social anxiety and autism are a reality brought on by the current way of living. My daughter has decided that - albeit she will work and live in a state-funded protected modus - she will go out and try to talk to kids who have trouble communicating and making friends. And yes, that kind of optimism comes from her idol, Sue Heck.
This is much your situation too, as you say you don't really care what others think of you anymore (a great step in the right direction and proof of your mental strength), and are not ashamed to express your feelings.
As an aside: look up the 1969 Mama Cas Elliot song "Make your own music."
It featured in 'The Middle' after Sue's graduation and is the best song to describe people like yourself and my kids and me. I had some of her educators listen too it and they too are now searching the net for tidbits of "The Middle" and its educative values to use as examples.
Keep up the good work and show those ignoramusses what you're all about. Think of Sue when she was a wrestlerette: unashamed doing her own thing, despite the clear dismissive looks on the faces many of her peers.
I can only support your efforts too look at life in a more positive manner, and the fact that you try so hard (as you say EVERYTHING) to do so. Keep looking for positive quotes, keep talking to your psychologist and psychiatrist, not to mention the counselling sessions at school. Those underpayed people know what they are doing (at least if they are anything like the cargivers in the schools my kids went too). You go, girl.

Having seen every episode of "The Middle" multiple times (they keep re-running the show here in Belgium, and I keep watching it), I can honestly say that Eden Sher's performance as Sue Sue Heck is the main reason for that. Now that girl got a real gift for acting and even outdoes the great and experienced cast members.
My 12-year old daughter started watching the show with Charlie Mc Dermott's Axl as her main interest but after a few episodes there where many cries of "she's just like me!" "See, Axl DOES like his sister" and especially "Poor Sue, how does she manage to stay so chipper in the face of so much bad luck." Season 1's final had her cheering aloud when Sue had to finish the distance on crutches to make the cross-country team. Season 6 final episode had her crying when Sue received her yearbook. Yes, the Middle has a great and very positive influence on my daughter with Eden Sher's performance shining tru it all.
Of course, this in no way diminishes the other cast members - we do love all of them. Mike, Frankie, Brick, Axl (in no particular order.) Even the supporting cast seems born for their part in this series.

    • @TheMusicPinkLover91
      @TheMusicPinkLover91 Před 8 lety

OMG when she made the cross-country team .... Don't even remind me!!! I was crying like a baby at that moment, and I still do every time I watch it ... and I'm double the age of your daughter *facepalm* LOL. I agree with everything you said about Eden Sher and Sue Sue Heck!

    • @rudolftrost3534
      @rudolftrost3534 Před 8 lety +2

      Elise MusicNerd
Thank you for agreeing with me that "The Middle" is a great show to watch and Eden Sher is the real star. Compared to other family shows, where everyone is such a perfect shining example and all the kids may be somewhat naughty but are always obedient to their parents (Cosby show a.o.) this one really beats them all. Now, I have to confess that personally, I'm like Mike, albeit much more social. The episodes where Sue Sue and her father are together are by far my favourites - especially as I mostly watch my daughter's face and see her understanding me tru Mike. A fantastic feeling...
Also, for once I've looked at your personal postings and discovered that you also like good music, congrats, for the most part I think good taste in music died in today's generation (which you obviously outgrew). As Reverend TIM TOM would say, "Have a good life Elise, and kudos to you and your parents for being what you are."

    • @TheMusicPinkLover91

Rudolf Trost Couldn't have said it better myself! :) I honestly think "The Middle" deserves much more credit than it actually has because it's a tv series which everyone should look up to because it's very realistic and life lessons are being learnt in every episode.
I don't think I can say I'm exactly like one of the characters. But I do imagine myself being a mum like Frankie and I look up to Sue very much in difficult situations. I can relate to Axl's intelligence because I admit on becoming a bit lazy at school and I suffer from social anxiety, which is somewhat related to Brick's way of dealing with social situations. So I have a mix and match of almost everyone except Mike lol :P
I thank you a lot for looking at my personal postings and congratulating me for my good taste in music! I try to appreciate every music genres but unfortunately, as a singer myself, I feel that good music is decreasing nowadays. I study classical voice but I mostly go for modern music, mostly songs which cross-overs singers do covers of. Sorry for the long essay but it's really great to talk to someone who gets it!

Thank you so much for recognizing what a gifted actor Eden is. I have been dumbfounded for years why she has not had more recognition by way of nominations and awards. While her performance as sue has the potential to be over the top, she always brings an unprecedented subtlety, nuance and humanity to each performance. I am so excited that they are spinning Sue off after the demise of The Middle.

I think the whole cast is amazing! One thing that tickles me is those times the parents slip into "Sue" or "Axyl" it's subtle but if watching the show enough you can seen Mike acting a bit like Axyl or Frankie acting Sue-ish! I LOVE THAT the show pays such close attention to details like that, after all when blood related you are going to tend to act like other family members from time to time. Eden Sher is absolutely amazing and I'm going to miss this show a great deal!

This feels very informative on understanding the perspective of the actor and the character they portray on camera. It's also good to know that even though Eden Sher started gaining recognition amongst TV fans with the ABC sitcom The Middle as Sue Heck, now she can add Star Butterfly of the Disney XD show Star VS the Forces of Evil onto that resume.

There's WAY too much talking before getting to the target scene. I hope you're not one of those self-indulgent acting teachers who talk talk talk instead of letting your students use as much class time as possible for practice. It's only through practice that people improve as actors, not by listening to the lectures of their teachers. Btw, based on its title, look & time slot, I wrongly assumed that this show was sub-par & didn't watch it for years. I was so wrong. The writing, acting, viewpoint & humor of "The Middle" are all very impressive. It has surprisingly become one of my favorite shows.

I lost interest in your video as soon as you said you only rate The Middle as average, I would like to know how you rate The Big Bang Theory, a show that started out well, but has become a tired and repetitive one trick pony with no character development, and is now sadly well below average. The last and final episode of The Middle was the best final episode of any comedy series I've watched, with no loose ends, whereas the last episode of the latest season of Big Bang was a damp squib relying on the same old tired jokes. I note however that your video is dated Jan. 2016, so do you still rate The Middle average in 2018.

I could do better. That wasn't even a challenging scene... If we don't count the crappy writing. None of these actors were talented. I see why someone would think they are good, but they actually are not. She empathizes ok but can't channel her emotions in a logical order. The facial expressions have a very little variability and she reacts before the other actor has finished his/her line. It's just not convincing. In other words: she's missing the very basic skills of even a beginner actor. I'm surprised this show hasn't been canceled yet. Guess that's all thanks to you eight people who liked this.
