    Jim, just to finish the story, I saw this boat as a mail order kit in the back of a yachting magazine when I was 14. I spent the next year saving the $100 needed to buy the kit and plans. I got $2 for mowing lawns and $2 for shoveling driveways and in 12 months saved 100 single dollar bills. I put all 100 singles in an envelop along with the application and mail ordered the kit. In a few weeks the kit showed up at my parents house. My Dad spotted me another $100 for the rest of the wood and parts. When school ended in the spring, I took over my parents garage and built this boat over the summer, again almost identical to the one that you built minus the natural veneer. Your video reminded me of that special time. Thanks again for posing.

    Hi Jim, I built a boat almost identical to this one when I was 15. Mine was painted, the natural finish is beautiful. I'm now 60 and really enjoyed your video!. Thanks for posting it, well done! Art

    Dave,I borrowed the vacuum pump from a friend, but you can build or buy one. The bagging material is just plastic sheet from the big box stores. It is sealed down with clear packing tape. I used System 3 Silver tip epoxy, which cures over night. Look up my build log on the Glen l website, search for "Michigan Squirt build".Glen l offers study plans for a reasonable price. The planes are copyrighted, and I don't think I can legally sell them.

    Hi,The hull is sheeted with 1/4" marine plywood, and then veneered with 1/42" mahogany. I used a vacuum bag technique to apply even pressure to the veneer while the epoxy cured. This is a small boat, so the veneer kept the weight down, and gave me the look I wanted. Larger boats use a different cold molding process, and the last layer can be thicker mahogany planks. My deck also uses thicker planks.

    Hi Jim, I've wanted to build a wooden boat for well over 15 years. I've always liked the look of the classc runabouts, and have finally purchased the plans for the Squirt. I wanted to thank for posting your build progress on the Glen L forum. I learned, or have gleaned a lot of information from you and those who posted questions or answers there. I still need to do a little more research before I start and was going to get the Building Plywood Boats book that Glen L offers. Do you think I should also purchase the Boatbuilders Notebook, or would that just be redundant?

    • @jimyoung5759
      @jimyoung5759  Před 4 měsíci +1

      There is a little more in the notebook on motors, but for the most part it covers the same stuff.

    Very nice indeed! What type of planking did you use, as it appears to be what you would see on wood floors (not the Pergo junk)? I like the ingenious idea that you came up with, using bags of sand, which I have a lot of where we reside - Clarin, Misamis Occidental, Mindanao, Philippines. I would very much like to try and build something as beautiful as you have. At age 68, all I have is time on my hands.

    I'm currently in the process now of getting all the material together to build the Glen L Squirt myself. I'm debating on going with a jet drive but need to find a small jet drive assembly first. Can you elaborate on your vacuum technique a bit more? Materials used to vacuum, where to get them, how long did you have to apply vacuum for or maybe a link to the whole process?

    Hey Jim, 2 questions....what did you use to glue down the laminate, and what did you use to create the striping between the planks? Thanks....Jack

    We just bought the plans for this boat and all the mahogany. The initial frame I think we can build but the directions say nothing about how to apply the vaneer or the planking you placed on the deck. I’m very excited but a little nervous about getting started

    • @jimyoung5759
      @jimyoung5759  Před 5 lety +1

      Make sure to get a copy of "boat building with plywood ", this covers the basic construction of the Glen L designs. This book and the plans just cover building the basic hull. All the veneer and planking is up to the builder. I documented my build on the Glen L forums. Sign up for an account there and you will find lots of ways to finish off your boat. The people there are very helpful and will get you through to the end.

    • @jimyoung5759
      @jimyoung5759  Před 3 lety +1

      I temporarily bent the Chines in place and took that angle, and made the hook angle a little wider. It is a little smaller than the breasthook, it just needs to be long enough on each side to get a couple of screws into it.
