I'm really loving these qouache sketchbook paintings! The sparkly water....!
I think I need to start traveling with Gouache! Beautiful sense of light Lena!
I have such a love / frustrated relationship with your painting videos Lena. So many times I'm thinking Lena STOP, that's perfect and then you paint over it. Then again it's at that point I think No Lena Stop now and you once again paint another layer of gouache lol its an emotional journey 😉 each layer and stage is lovely in its own right, because I can't see your intended destination / vision for the piece. Thanks for sharing ❤👍
:D Thanks for writing this, April! You are absolutely right. Watching my videos I often think "oh, it was all right, I should have left this area". Unfortunately gouache doesn't help finish paintings faster. It gets so much darker when it dries that I often have to repaint certain areas several times until I get the tones right (it never happens with oils). This is what happened with the sky in this painting. Even though it looked ok against the shining water I wanted it to be lighter (as it was that day) to create feeling of a bright day. Also, I always have to think on the whole impression. All the parts of the painting have to work together... Even when something looks nice I may alter it a few times in order to make it work in context of the whole...
Lena Rivo... I totally understand Lena... I said all of that in a tone of fun as I know all too well the chameleon foibles of gouache 😉
Wow Lena how gorgeous
Sparkles with bright light....beautiful!
i love the muted pastel tones in this painting :D

Typically I wont watch a speed video, I get dizzy, but the image you posted was so compelling I watched. Very nice.
Tony you can control the speed by hitting the gear symbol on the bottom right of a youtube video.Click off the "normal" and choose the speed you want.
Should've known, and asked my kids! Thanks Tom.
Well I'll be! That's slick - saved me from getting out the Dramamine again.
Wonderful!
Maravilloso!.

Very nice, but I would like to see your reference photo or thumbnail sketches.
Love it. You are so good with color! Thank you for sharing! xo
Just incredible color mixing and layering!! Gorgeous rendering of the light and atmosphere of that moment. Was that from a plein air study?
Thank you, Sherrie. Yes, it was from a plein air study. You have a sharp eye 😁 this condition is impossible to photograph well.
i love your videos
Hermosa !!pintura me encanta , hasta tuve la osadía de meterme al agua y disfrutar de ese esquisito mar , Felicitaciones excelente resultado 😉
Lovely. Thanks for sharing. What brushes do you use for gouache? I have been doing watercolor and have some gouache to try out but my good brushes are too soft for the heavier gouache I think.
Farmwife hi! With gouache I use all sorts of short handled brushes for acrylics. Watercolor brushes are really too soft for gouache.
Lena as ever your work is faultless, could you put up subtitles of your colour or show your palet so beginner's like myself can understand bet kindest regards mickT
Saludos maestra! ! !
Is there anything you can add to gouache to slow down drying time even by a couple of minutes while keeping it opaque? So not water but some oil or emulsion?
callmedeno No, there is nothing you can add to gouache to slow down its drying time. I spray my gouache with water every five minutes or so, both the paints in the paint box and my mixing tray. Also, with gouache you need to load your brush with paint. When you use little paint to mix colors they dries much faster on the mixing tray than when you grab enough paint with your brush, if it were oil or acrylics.
what do you use to make the gouache stay permanently on your paintings!?
Lena, always dig watching you paint. There's one thing I think that distracts and to me it's that blast of a red dot right at the corner of the house. I think you still would have had a focal point without that one bit of red. It's just a tad too much, at least to my eye. Everyone has an opinion, eh. Anyway, you know I'm a fan cuz I have a couple of your pieces. So thanks for the art.
gloobnord hi Will! Thanks for letting me know your opinion. I actually like that dot. It’s red color makes the turquoise greens of the water sing. While painting I do not think much on focal points trying to convey my impression from the whole scene. Because of this approach I sometimes miss something that other viewers may find distracting..
Yeah, me comprendo. Like I said, everybody has an opinion. Like my beloved president say's "Yeah, but I'm right. I'm always right. No ones ever been more... more... righter." Thanks for the art, Lena. Will.
God preserve us from loud mouthed yanks!
What's the song at 5:50 called? Absolutely beautiful pairing of music and artwork. I love the way you paint :)
Seattlempd Thank you! The music is “She Will Never Know” - Loving Caliber. I got it on Epidemic Sound.
Thank you :) You inspired me to do a set of four beach scene paintings today!
Seattlempd I am happy to hear that!!
What brushes are you using?
Cual es tipo de libro es ese es para watercolor o para charcoal lla que la pagina no se dobla
Gouache is something new for me. Is this cheaper than water color? What about the consistancy? Does it fade overtime? Does it flake off?
Watercolour and gouache are generally priced around the same. Like any other medium, there are high quality and low quality watercolours and gouache so it really just depends on the quality of paint you're buying. Consistency of gouache can be altered or controlled by the amount of water you mix into it, mixing more water into the paint makes it thinner and more translucent whereas less water will make it thicker/more opaque. It differs from watercolour in the sense that watercolour tends to be more transparent (but of course adding more pigment will make paint more vibrant). In my experience, I've never seen my gouache paintings fade or flake off
Здорово это пишется на бумаге?Масляными красками?
Это дизайнерская гуашь на бумаге :)
What sketchbook?
Why do you change the colour of the sky so many times? Is it that it gets too dark or whatever in comparison to the sea?
Kalina Spasova Yes, I needed the sky to be dark enough to make the sparkling water glow, but I also didn’t want it to be too dark because it was supposed to suggest a noon time and not an evening.
@@LenaRivo Okay. Thank you! 💓
