I did this study to practice color mixing for skin tones. Usually, I am much more intentional with brushstroke making, but here I allowed myself to be sloppier and just focused on color mixing. In nature, you can rarely see pure colors. Most of the colors in the surrounding world are muted because every object is affected by multiple light sources, shadows, and the ambient light. I appreciate the detailed explanation presented in this video, but would never consider this technique because it's very complicated and obliterates what I like most about gouache - its' matte finish. I don't like that it darkens the painting, and as a cynic, I sincerely doubt that the painting will not yellow and crack over time. I don't see the logic in applying the varnish, then applying an isolation coat before applying another top coat while rationalizing that the isolation coat will allow curators to remove the damage done to the painting from the varnish, isolation coat and top coat. Personally, I'll stick with sealing my watercolor and gouache paintings with Dorland's Wax Medium. One coat and you're done. It doesn't shift the color, and paintings remain matte instead of being shifted to look like plastic as acrylic products do.

    I’m Im thinking this method would also work to varnish watercolor paintings?

    • @LenaRivo
      @LenaRivo Před 5 dny

      Theoretically, yes, but because watercolor is applied in washes and is not as opaque as gouache, varnish can make a watercolor painting darker because it makes all paintings look wet. It is good for gouache because it makes colors more intense, but it may not work as well for watercolor. Tests are necessary.

    Lena, one thing I struggle with using gouache or oil paint is mixing every little color I see. Like I see you do in your paintings. Take for instance her leg... you have at least half a dozen colors used to make up that leg. I would tend to paint the leg one color and try to layer other colors on top of that. Besides practice and intent, how might someone get better results like yours? Same with oil paints... many artists mix up a bunch of colors before starting a portrait painting... I just haven't figured that out yet... Thanks for your wonderful videos...

    • @LenaRivo
      @LenaRivo Před 15 dny

      With gouache, it was helpful to use a wet palette this time because it kept my color mixes wet, so I could apply the same colors on different figures. But I do constantly adjust my colors as I paint, making the colors on my mixing palette warmer, cooler, lighter, darker, greener, bluer, more purple. I know that a wide variety of hues and temperatures adds a lot to the painting, so I am very patient when I paint. I pay a lot of attention to subtle transitions of color and try to capture those. I never premix colors, even when I work with oils. I try to make each of my paintings unique, without using “formulas”. Patience is my super-power :) I just do whatever it takes to achieve the best possible results.

    Hi Lena! I'm so glad I found your channel. It's not easy to find artworks in oil pastel that are as beautiful as yours - I love how your oil pastel artworks are both realistic to the subject but with some abstractions. The color harmonies are incredible. I am completely new to oil pastels and bought the expensive Caran d'Ache set for plein air sketching/painting as there are times when I simply don't want to work with a wet medium (which requires a pochade box). I was wondering if you have already tried to do oil patels in plein air? I had thought to remove all the wrapping from the pastels (as you suggest) and dump them in a fanny pack with some paper filler/tissue to protect them - and like that it should be possible to stand with a sketch pad and draw. I suppose the only way to know for sure is to try this myself -but I was hoping you'd have some thoughts around this, or if you have tried it yourself? Thanks for your brilliant guides and the wonderful story of the swan at the end.

    • @LenaRivo
      @LenaRivo Před 29 dny

      Hi Isa! Thank you for your kind words. I am glad to hear that my art resonates with you :) From your words, I understand that you think that plein air painting is more simple and easier than it really is :) If you tried to take your pastels outdoors and paint something with them you would quickly realized that you didn’t have any of the colors that you needed. Even the full set of Neopastels is not enough to make a plein air painting look true to life because it doesn’t have enough light and muted colors. I have made a few sketches from my studio window and it worked well, but I was using my full palette of oil pastels that includes the full sets of Neopastel, Mungyo, Hwawon and Holbein Artist oil pastels. You can imagine that taking all my three boxes to paint outdoors is not that convenient. I would need to sit with them somewhere on a grass. I wouldn’t be able to sketch something standing. For this reason, I don’t find oil pastels a good medium for plein air painting. Gouache is much more efficient. With pastels I need to layer colors to achieve the color I need, while with gouache I can mix the right color in a few seconds. Therefore, oil pastel is a studio medium for me. I hope this helps. Regardless of what I have just said, I think it’s worth trying. Maybe oil pastel will work for you as a plein air medium 😉

      @@LenaRivo Haha oh dear! I was too optimistic! Maybe I'll have to try and find creative ways around the limitations and be a bit imaginative with the color choices and concede that I may only be able to do warm/cool tonal studies plein air. Not sure, I'll have to try and see. Thank you so much for your insights, it's good to know the limitations and will prevent frustration on my part when I do go out and realise I can't get the colours I want.

    I love your work and it's amazing how you're as masterful at acrylics as you are w/ gouache and other mediums! Do you have any tips for how to get the color accurate with acrylics, which always dry darker?

    • @LenaRivo
      @LenaRivo Před měsícem

      Thank you :) I don’t have any valuable tips on that topic because I have never noticed that. I use Golden Heavy Body and Open acrylics and they seem not to change their values at all as they dry. Maybe it depends on the brand and some acrylic paints do become darker after drying. Also, it may depend on the support - on absorbent grounds even oil paint can change value. If I experienced this issue with acrylics , I would use them like gouache, which means I would test a color before covering a large area with it. Just like gouache, ordinary acrylics dry fast and after applying a bit of color to the canvas, in a minute, you can already see if the value is right or not.

    • @kath2142
      @kath2142 Před měsícem

      @@LenaRivo Thank you! I use Golden acrylic also. I guess I will need to spend more time testing to see how it dries before putting it on my canvas. :)
