    I'm a current junior in high school, any recommendations regarding furthering my interest in the Haas school? I've visited the campus before but that was a few years back when I wasn't thinking about college seriously, also I'm out of state (Texas) and I hear it's harder for those who don't live in California to get admitted to state schools like UCB? (Also if you don't mind me asking what were the top 3 stats (including any essays/connections) that you believe caused you to be admitted?) I also have a few questions regarding how the UCB system works with applying and going in undeclared... my dad is a Berkeley alumni where going in undeclared was commonplace, but obviously things have changed over the decades, and I'm unfamiliar with the concept of declaring majors in sophomore/junior year.

      Hi Monica I read your comment I’m currently a transfer student deciding between Uc Merced & Berkeley. If Merced because it's smaller school more research opportunities. Vs Berkeley. I’m worried if I choose UCB my GPA will drop & I won't get research opportunities which I need for grad school . What did you choose?

      Money is a valid issue when choosing a school. I'm sad I won't get to study with you at Cal, but wherever you've chosen to attend, that's the college you were meant to be at, so take full advantage!

      Cal is my dream school. I can't stop thinking about it day and night. It sometimes break my heart because I had two tough years and my grades are not ivy league-like. Plus, I'm very much out of our of State. I literally am not even an American and yet, I love this school. The money might be the issue but I guess I'll sort it out. I really need financial aid because this is getting hectic.
      I'm still hoping that you are able to live a life if abundance 💜

    I got in but the main thing that’s really stopping me from accepting is the environment (snakey vibes) and the cost. I’m an English major and after college I’m worried I won’t get a job that will pay for it. I was struggling, everyone is just telling me go for the cheapest option. UCD is cheaper so

      @milinakamura4350  Před 4 lety +2

      As long as you surround yourself with the right people, you won't have to deal with any snakes vibes! Especially an for English majors, there's no cap on the major (as far as I know), so there's no reason to be competitive. I'd say the most competitive environment you'll encounter is getting into clubs. As for cost, "brand name" isn't what will carry you; what you invlove yourself in outside of classes and networking will carry you :)

      @@cutegrizzlybear again, as a pre-business major, which is supposed to be the MOST toxic and cutthroat, I haven't experienced any toxic people. and if I saw any- I just made sure not to interact with them. It's a HUGE school so you'll be able to find and surround yourself with supportive people. ngl tho, clubs are competitive to get into.

      I'm an incoming freshman at Cal, planning to major in computer science. Now that the UC's are considering to drop SAT/AC test requirements, extracurriculars are very important. You should strive to show the person reading your application what you are passionate about, how committed you are to your community whether that be your city a group of friends, or an organization you love collaborating with. Lastly, authenticity is very important. Anyone can tell a lie or a brag when reading an application. Be yourself! Show your interest in Cal. A good essay-writing tip is to list a few clubs/student organizations you'd like to be involved in or even courses you'd like to take at Cal, and this tip can work for any school you choose to apply to.

      @@sofiagilmore9176 Hyrule's advice about referencing specific Cal clubs and classes is excellent advice for private schools, but don't do this for UC, since you apply to all UCs with the same application. On the UC, honestly I think you can exaggerate a little. They have so many applications they just skim the essays. Embellish, don't lie. They will almost surely not audit you. But you should be a good person and be honest. And make sure you are very clear and direct. Reflect on your growth without talking about the super obvious consequences/being really flowy and circuitous.
      Also, now that SAT/ACT is almost certainly out the window, the next "easy metric" is GPA, so make sure that is solid. You'd want your AP GPA to be 4.2 maybe. Especially for impacted (highly competitive) majors like engineering or CS. For less competitive majors, you can get away with less. Don't stress too much if this is difficult, as a 4.2+ makes your application all the stronger, but is by no means a requirement. UCLA is a stickler for GPA though.

      George Brantley I am really interested in environmental science and psychology. What would you say is better for UC schools ap or college classes. I’m planning on taking ap Spanish and ap history sophomore year but I was wondering what classes I should do junior year. I take weighted classes so my gpa last year was a 4.17. Any other tips you have on getting into Berkeley or any other top university would be fantastic.

    • @georgebrantley776
      @georgebrantley776 Před 4 lety +1

      @@sofiagilmore9176 All the AP STEM you'd want to make sure you take and get 5. Bio, Psych, and APES being the obvious ones. Chem and calc bc highly highly encouraged. APCSA and AP Physics 1/2/CM/CEM less necessary. I'd recommend CSA and Phy1 still though, and if you feel confident in Phy1 then might as well take PhyCM that same year as well, as it will be quite easy to self study the tiny bit of extra material.
      In terms of classes, I'd say community college classes would be better because they are transferable and can count for college credit (check assist . org for transfer agreements). Some community colleges accept high schoolers for free. CSULA is a cal state but they have a program too I think.
      But I would not recommend taking something like bio at community college unless you really cannot fit it into your schedule, because it will probably be easier at your school and you can get better letters of rec (not relevant for UC, but for privates somewhat important). But if you can manage it, go for stem classes at community college instead of unnecessary APs that do not contribute to a-g requirements such as both Euro AND World. In high school, take every AP you can possibly fit, but do not give up a stem for a non-stem is what I'm saying. And definitely give up a non-stem for a college class. A community college class with a lab portion demonstrates rigor that high schools cannot match.
      As far as GPA goes, UC only looks at 10~12 GPA, and since you apply in November of senior year it is actually only 10~11 grade that matter for UC. MIT will look at 10~12 as well, I think. Other privates will consider freshman year. Your 4.17 looks good, but as always, the higher the better. But that is not a problem for you I'm sure.
      So much depends on just how hard your local college is, just how hard your teachers are, your personal strengths and weakness, so it is hard to advise a specific course of action but I hope my general advice is helpful. I was probably kinda of confusing at times so feel free to ask me to clarify anything.

      There are a lot of rumors about how engineering at Berkeley is impossible to survive, and the only way to pass is to dedicate your life to studying. I’m a current freshman and Computer Science major there, and when I first heard these things about Berkeley, it did turn me off. However, in my experience here so far I have been able to keep a good work/life balance and do all the things I love while still keeping a good grip on classes and school work. It will definitely push you and teach you how to efficient study/manage your time, but once you adapt you’ll have a decent amount of free time to dedicate to other things.

      ok I am not in the college of engineering BUT I am in the college of chemistry under a chemical engineering major. At cal, all the classes are tough (nearly) but they are all totally doable. For some context, last semester I left the library every night like around midnight to 2am but it was all ok. My main study tip is to reserve a in one of the libraries(if they are open this year lol) with a chalk or whiteboard and review the material as if you are teaching to a class that does not understand even the simplest topics. Also if you are a stem major, I recommend joining a fraternity that is based around your own major. It really does make it so you are constantly surrounded by motivated people facing the same things you are and it also opens doors to opportunities that you would not have found anywhere else. You do not need to be a god amongst mortals to do well here, you just need to be willing to do your best.
