  • Check out this installation of the S&S complete Cam Kit specifically for the 1999 and 2000 Harleys. These are a bit different because they have a timing sensor in the cam cover itself. These 510 cams will give you all the grunt you need for your Harley 88" motor, and upgrade your tensioners from the old problematic spring loaded tensioners to the New Hydraulic types.     Well, your video got me in the dog house. My Honey asked me to go to the mailbox and get the mail. I was so engrossed watching this video I done forgot!...lol...That S&S does look look like a nice kit. Good video Ralph, Thanks!.......I will survive...:)

    Man, I love anything old school or horsepower related Ralph. I almost went with The S&S big bore kit on my M8 but settled for Screaming Eagle instead. Great video Ralphy my boy

    I own two TwinCams, both 2006, (one with 248,000km on the original motor , never been apart) so this is very relevant to me.

      It is a great kit to do the conversion and it pulls strong. A definate improvement and it will add to the longevity of your bike! 248,000 wow. I am sure it is due to be checked out and a great candidate for this kit. Thanks for commenting.

      @@itsmytimeletsgo I believe I get superior mileage due to using Penrite Full Mineral High Zinc High-Performance Diesel 20w-50 Engine oil , changed every 5000kms

    I just installed the S&S cam kit with 551c cams into my 2011 FLHX wasn’t hard to do just follow the instructions carefully and take your time. The only thing I may have missed in the video I didn’t see you checking the runout on the crank.
    The S&S 510’s & 551’s pull great especially for a bagger super happy with the kit, loved your video you’re very knowledgeable and present the subject matter in an easy to understand manner keep up the good work

      You would need a different kit than this one but S&S does supply what you need. Very nice to not have to be searching out all the parts all over the place and having everything in one kit is a god send. Thanks for commenting.

    great job ralph, i have 2000 flhtc and want to replace the tensioners. the wear at 22k miles really doesn't look bad but the fact they're 24 years old is what i don't like. this is not my daily rider, it was a buddy's who had it since 2003 and passed away so i know it's all original. as it only gets 3k miles on it a year, i'm sticking with spring tensioners and stock cam plate but figured i upgrade to S&S 509 cam and new inner bearings for just the price of the parts. do you see anything wrong with my thinking?

      Nothing wrong with you thought at all. It is always a matter of money. I would upgrade to the harley billet plate, or some other type, and new oil pump as they are the weak points but with such low mileage you will probably be fine just getting rid of the old bearings, inside and plate ones. Upgrading the cams, I have used them and they work great, but again I would think about an oil pump upgrade of some sort. They are the weak point on these early stock bikes. More power needs more oil flow. Good luck.Thanks for commenting.
