- Today we show what to sow in August in the UK. Allotment gardening in the UK in 2021 has been an unusual year but we are planning to sow seeds now in August that we can harvest up to Christmas and Winter.
We often get asked, what can I sow in August? We have often run out of space by now but by harvesting the potatoes early to avoid blight we have created space to sow seeds now for Autumn and Winter crops. If you have seen our vegetable garden tour then you will have seen that we have plenty of crops growing and our self sufficiency skills are improving.
Today we are planting lettuce, carrots, spinach beet/ chard, spring onions, mixed salad leaves, radish, beetroot and turnips. We have found that in August many shops are reducing the price of the seeds plus this is a way to use up seeds that are left in packets from earlier in the year. We are excited to be more self sufficient this year by growing crops late into the summer and autumn.
Having an allotment garden gives us space to try new vegetables and growing methods. Allotment gardening is very rewarding and we would like to encourage more people to try and become more self sufficient.

Thanks for what to sow in August. Simple question.Where do you get your blue bendy tube for the netting?
Thank you. The blue piping is water pipe. We have been given some, inherited some and found a roll by the roadside once. It’s probably available to buy or befriend someone who fits it for a job as you only want off cuts.
Great tips / really informative
Thank you

All my beetroot says to plant out in July, are there later planting varieties?
No you just plant these that say July / it’s not the ideal time August but the ground is warm so you’ll get quick germination and if the weather stays mild you’ll still get a good crop / I may keep mine covered as it will keep them warmer if it does turn cold / I will just keep an eye on how they are doing and the weather
I have lost my turnip seeds but will do a beet sowing and see what happens. I prefer them small anyway.
Good luck, let us know how you get on.
