    Ahh the Ebay Tyco rabbit hole of Doom! It amazes me the garage sale folks by me who think because it's an old Tyco train it's worth thousands lol. I love fixing them up and reselling at a fair price to keep these vintage memories rolling, but let's be honest these are not worth what most Ebay twits are asking, especially in the condition they post them in lol. Great video as always!

      Seems $15-$30 for a decent, not banged up common Tyco diesel loco is fair. I don't care if it runs or not but I want it to not have broken gears or burned up commutator. I'll do $30-$50 for a common steamer. Some of the rare ones go for big bucks. Ive spent and fought hard for a few of them on the auction site.

    The Santa Fe GP20 shocked me the most due to the dirt on it. It was amazing to see it run.
    As far as the Athearn GP7, there are louver vents down around the battery box which distinguish it from the GP9. This feature is easily overlooked, and many people would not know much of the difference. Another feature which changed on the GP9 was the radiator fans on top. Later model GP9s had a large single fan in place of the two smaller fans. This is something to note.
    The last thing I wanted to talk about was the designation of the Tyco F9A. I believe that these engines are actually late model F7As. The real F9As had an extra louver in front of the port hole windows near the cab. The Bachmann F9A has this feature, but Tyco doesn't. To add to the confusion of the model F9As, the real F9As were sometimes built from wrecked F units. So, did Tyco use a rebuilt F9A as their model for their engine or was this just a marketing one up scheme to sell models? Who really knows?

      There were a few F-9 locomotives made with the 36" dynamic brake fan, but they figured out pretty quick to make them with a 48" fan. Tyco called that an F-9, but anybody who knows would call it an F-7. 💙 T.E.N.

    Been there. Got a lot of 33 engines. No dummies. Auction said 14 worked. So as I was going through the feelings similar probably to withdraw waiting for my package to get here. Well set up small circle on kitchen table and went to work. 14 did run but about 5 needed traction rings. Which np. Had few extra parts from other lot buys. Took the traction wheel off and upgraded them to full metal wheels. Man what a difference. Anyways. Went on had all the engines moving but not all on tracks. ended up with 28 ready for the tracks and 5 that needed parts. This set was how I got 3 atlas gps 1 was just chassis but worked on track other 2 were DCC (DT&I & N&W) . Plus a cpl other gems. Which is how I ended up buying 4 more of the athearns sd-45 emd GM engines . Gonna turn 1 DCC with a digitrax 126 . Love the looks of it. Had other gems to. Great deal for what I paid. Seemed almost unreal I won at what I paid. Someday when I have room I might get more into doing videos about them. As of now I fix them collect them and have smaller 2 track test setup. Just to get them out to play. Have around 300 as of last train show in Lansing Michigan. Got lost and forgot to do a cpl videos for CZcams. I was high on trains. Uhm so I guess I come to you. Great collection of 'classic model trains'! The Tyco General is indeed 'tender powered'. Those Tyco and Mantua 0-4-0 and 0-6-0 locos are built like tanks. It is rare that I can't get one working again with just wheel cleaning and/or commutator cleaning. Remember that those particular locos pick up power from one rail on the tender and the loco picks up the power from the other rail. Typically nice little open framed 5-pole motors. Thanks for the tip on HOseeker. I have some things to send his way..

    Good morning sir! The Athearn is a GP7: the difference between a GP7 and a GP9 is related to the number and the position of the louvers on the body. This, in fact, is a hybrid, because she has the louvers (number/position) of a GP7, but has a 48 inches dynamic brake fan, which was used on the GP9 (the 7 has a 36 inches one). All the F units are F7s phase I: 4 horizontal louvers between the portholes and a 36 inches fan cooling the dynamic brake. It’s good to watch a new video; keep posting! Greetings from the (now) cold south!

    • @suppylarue220
      @suppylarue220 Před 2 lety +1

      hi regis. a GP7 is 1500 hp. a GP9 is 1750 hp. the dynamic brake fan can be either 36 or 48 inch diameter on the GP7. they are 48" on the dynamics on all GP9s. late production GP9s use 48" fans instead of each pair of 36" fans.
      the Athearn model is strictly a GP7 with a winterization hatch over the rear most 36" fan. the short good also is equipt with a steam generator.
      it was all hashed out in the early 1970s publication extra 2200 South, the absolute authority on locomotives. I'll discuss the athearn rendition later, along with f unit variations.
