- Hello Everyone,
In this video we talk about Heros efasciatus, or more commonly know as the Severum or Banded Cichlid. This is a large South American Cichlid that is relatively mild and makes a great addition to a larger sized tank (75 gallon or greater). Check them out!

Jason, I throughly enjoy your channel. The content and quality in my opinion is on par with the top channels. Continue the great work!
Thank you for saying that! Appreciate it!
All 8 of my Severums found this video amazing. They can look at the TV and were definitely interested more then anything else on TV. Good vid on the species information anyhow
Glad they liked it. :-)
I think Severums are under rated and deserve far more attention in the hobby. Super video :)
Thank you!
There it is, was really waiting for someone to highlight this fish, a very underrated one. Good video Jason, love seeing your videos and ur fish tanks. Please do one on Giant Gourami as well, if you can.
Thank you!
Always loved severums and think they are under rated!!! Thanks for showing yours , they are beautiful and the red shoulder is the most beautiful I’ve seen!!! 👍💯😃
Thank you! They are really cool fish!
Amazing fish. Videos like this that explain how big they get are so important. Thank you
Prime Time Aquatics! You guys are the best! Your videos are very even-keeled and informative. Well done!
Thank you!
I love Severums so much! I haven't had a tank for years, but when did, my gold and green severums were the stars of my 125 gallon! At the time I had that, I also had a 65 gal, 75 gal, and a 29 gal quarantine tank. I miss the hobby so much.
Sounds like a great tank! : -)
@@PrimeTimeAquatics the republican southern holloween severum cichlid is a bully I had it but not this time this time I have a plan 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆
Get it going.
Awww man! Now I need some red shoulder Severums in my life. They are stunning!
LadyKej They may be my favorite variety of severum.
Nice video!
I really think of getting a few Severum and Geophagus in my new 170 gal.
Your video really helped, thanks!
That would look cool!
Hey Jason, thanks for all the information on severums. Great looking fish. I enjoyed the video. Cheers.
Lumpydog Thank you! Appreciate you watching.
I dunno how I missed this one lmao. My favourite fish channel and my favourite fish lol. Such gentle giants. I keep cardinals with mine and have never lost one!
Very cool!
Great video and on time. Don't forget the blue hero tapajos and the hero notatus.
Idk why?But I've seen this video like 10 times already.Fav fish and the video is very informative. 👌
Thank you :-)
Beautiful fish. That Geophagus is stunning!
Thank you!
These are a great fish. Thanks for sharing
I've watched dozens of your videos, commented, and even talked to you in the comments. This whole time I thought I was subscribed but, apparently I wasn't..... Well I just fixed that little problem lol. I appreciate all the info and direct replies to my questions
Appreciate you being here. :-)
I have 4 of these fish and I love their colors. There isn’t too many videos of these fish out there so thanks for making this one. I found that mine really like the sinking pellets over the floating ones but they do eat a variety of foods.
Thanks for sharing Mike - I love these guys too!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics nope the severum is a bully I had it that's why I haven't got one in a while but now I'm getting one cause I have a fish well equipped I have a male jewel cichlid his wife will be a beautiful female salvini cichlid. Wow, I never heard of this type of severum, what a beauty
First time I saw them was at the Aquatic Experience maybe a few years ago and knew I needed them in my life. : -)
Beautiful fish . I used to keep them in the past. They are beautiful fish and a joy to keep . Good video an information. Thumbs up
Thank you! Appreciate you watching.
Hi Jason, a great video on a underrated fish, l think you have a particularly fine specimen of the red shoulder sevrum, l really hope my five tiny one's turn out half as well as yours. I have moved over to SA cichlids, Uaru, sevrum & geophagus after realizing that no matter how hard l tried my African cichlid tank was always going to be a battlefield.
Sounds like a great selection of fish! Very cool!
Absolutely beautiful gentle giants. If I only had the money and a place for a large body of water. thank you for this species spotlight.
Deb O'Haver If you ever get the space, they are certainly worth trying. 😃
I've never seen a red shoulder severum before - gorgeous!
Thanks! We love him too!
I like them. They are hardy, majestic, less troublesome, beautiful, and like any other cichlids out there they have interesting personalities and often change colors depending on their moods .
That is so true. Substrate color has a big impact on their color as well.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics what affects does substate color have on them? I have two red shouldered and one fire red with red gravel..
My green severum really changes colour depending on how p*ssed off he is, he's only small (about 4") but he can be really dark green almost black, then the next second he is really light with lots of stripes, very interesting.
my green sev (7in) changes color all the time. he can be a solid green, zebra striped, pale yellow, or almost black. he can also turn his fins orange. it's really bizarre!
Central American Cutteri have also worked great for tank mates with my severums.
They are awesome. Nice spotlight.
Chronicles of Chris' Fishroom. Thank you!
Great fish to have. Very mild mannered and fun to watch
For sure!
Just got some Severum juveniles, I am so excited
They are so much fun!
Geophagus frontosa and severum. Very cool combo!
Thank you! :-)
They are beautiful. I hope to eventually keep a few someday. Good video👍🏿
Thank you!
Hey I see a Frontosa in their too! Awesome 👍
I have 4 super red severums about 5-6 in. They are the coolest fish to own. I also keep a tank with 17 juvenile cichlids and I have to say I'd just rather stare at my sevrums. Cool video and great info on the fish.
They can be so relaxing to watch. : -)
Just went and got me one of these big Boys Yesterday Beautiful Fish Love Him🙂🙂🙂
Very cool!
I have a red spotted severum. He is such a great fish. He definitely has a personality and is good with the other fish
The Red Spots are awesome too!
I always loved this fish.
I keep a variety of these guys, most recently added two Turquoise Red Spot. I put my large excess Water Wisteria in their tanks to float. It takes them a few days but they eat it all. Great species vid. Thanks!
Caylor's Aquatics They did the same to my wisteria! 😀
I have to throw so much away, I let them dispose of it for me lol @@PrimeTimeAquatics
Most beautiful tank...
Thank you!
I like the close footage, Severum is swimming in my room, cool. Its weird comparison but Severum fish seems to me to be more than such unaware fish.
Speaking of the “poor mans discus”. The Uaru is a great tank mate for Severus.
Uara is like a big brother 🤙
These are the real men discus. They don't die over water temperature.
Amazing fish!
Green Severums, Clown Loaches, and a Black Shark (Labeo Chrysophekadion). These are my favorites and make a very interesting tank.
Very cool fish!
Beautiful, beautiful, and beautiful.......
Beautiful red shoulder awesome color 👏🏾👍🏾
CICHLID OG Thank you!
Nice video...beautiful fish room.
Thanks!
Beautiful fish, wish they were a little smaller to have one in my 40 breeder now that I lost my electric blue acara
Red striped one is a beauty
wow that geo is absolutely beautiful also.
steven deno thank you!
I think it depends on their personalality if they are aggressive or not. I have a 8 in Gold Severum and he or she is the King or Queen of the “Castle”
Wow I never saw the red one .very nice.
a fantastic aquarium fish, pretty, hearty and will breed regularly. I had one missing an eye and lived almost 10 years, she was a big girl!
My first ever fish (a goldfish) was missing an eye when I got it, but I thought it was awesome!
Prefect species video on some beauties. Only bad part is now I want a couple.. Oh well, what's one more tank..and one more..and one more..
That's usually how it works. : -) Haha
Great video as always! I have a handful of severums as well. I really like your plastic plants...where did you get them from?
david ramsaur thank you! I got them from a local petstore. I believe most are Aquatop?
Good info! I have a pair of bala's and a hold Severum, and a very very tiny bichir they're juvenile and in a 55 gallon tank so I gotta go much bigger soon.
That will be fun!
My tds stays between 175-225. They seem fine. All other care, agree 💯
Gotta get me a red shoulder 🤩
I'm at around 170ppm for both GH and KH with no issues.
One of my favorites!!
The Fish Nerd Me too! I just wish they wouldn't eat all my plants. 😃
Ditto :)
Interesting video, very nice.
Thank you!
I keep my severums in the 150 tall as well they seem to enjoy it great video
Jake Mitchell very cool!
Will you be selling your shirts at the Ohio cichlid extravaganza? I would be interested in purchasing
I will bring some with me. : -)
Thank you!
Северумы обалденные)))
:) I just ordered two Red Shoulders and a Gold for my 75g.
Severum are Beautiful fish with some amazing colours love them. Beautiful mix of fish in there
Your tank very neat n clean bro

@@PrimeTimeAquatics welcome
Great job Jason 💪And so dog gone tempting! What is a bird watcher to do?
Buy fish of course. Haha
They are beautiful fish
Nikhiel Harrilal Thank you!
The first thing to congratulate you on the video and the spectacular fish you have.
My name is Alex, and I have a Spanish-speaking CZcams channel, next I will talk about the Heros fish and I would love to use your images as an example, but only if you want. I would put the name of your channel at the top of the video and there would also be a link to your channel in the description. I am waiting for your reply, a big hug partner
Severum
My favorite
Those gold Severums are the most beautiful fish I've ever seen
Thank you!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics what was that blue fish that swam by in the beginning with the red fins
I have a 120 gallon with 3 Red Spotted Severums and a Flowerhorn. They get along just fine...
For now
The flowerhorn will eventually kill your severuns
Nice looking tank Jason. I would like to set up a tank with Severums and Geophagus. My question is about substrate. I have read that Geophagus should be on sand. I like the look of the small pebbles in this tank. What’s your opinion?
When I am setting up a tank from scratch for geophagus I use sand. One thing you could consider is a mix when the center of the tank has gravel and it gradually moves into sand.
I have alot of severums split between my 11 aquariums. 2 of my red shoudlers are in a tank with midas, red devils, green terrors, jaguars, purple rose queen, pikes and some arowana knife fish lol 😆 they are all doing just fine
I'm getting a 300 gallon, 96X36X24, and wanted your expert opinion on how many severums and a couple tank mates would be a good amount. Really informative video. I'm now a subscriber
Appreciate you being here. At that size you could easily start with 6-8. If they start to breed things may get a little dicey, but manageable. I really like the geophagus as tank mates - rainbows might look nice as well.
I knew thought about rainbows. I have 2 Australian and a good size turquoise rainbow that are by far the biggest in my 100 gallon community tank. Thanks again for the great advice
My green severum was the best fish I've ever kept. Only downer is the plant incompatibility.
I'd love to keep severum fish as they're so pretty and docile. I need to save up to buy a massive tank first though!
If you ever get a larger tank they are so worth it!
@@PrimeTimeAquatics I wondered how many severum could I fit into a 75 gallon tank? Thanks
@@lepolhart3242 4
Great video and some beautiful fish. My LFS ordered me some red spot severums. I see a frontosa in there. Do the mix well? It's another fish I really like.
Red spots are very cool! I have had no issues with the mix.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics thank you!👍
Love the red shoulder sevs...wonder if they'd eat pothos? I have loads of pothos in my tanks.
SlickChick I don't think I have any pothos in my severum tanks. Not sure if they would eat the roots?
Beautiful! Maybe someday :) For now I'm limited to nano only :/
Sławek B. Nano is cool too!
Honestly you are all I watch anymore lol
Appreciate you being here!
My severums are in with motoro stingray and arowana perfect tank mates for them as the fill the space the others dont use and don't bother them at all
Interesting mix!
I just got a green severum that is about the size of a half dollar and red shoulder that is the size of a quarter. I got them in a 75 gallon aquarium. With three angel fish, a electric blue acare, three Bolivian rams and 5 Cory cats. I got another 75 with tetras in it that I may transfer some of my cichlids to later when they get bigger. Or upgrade to a larger tank.
Jason I got two hang on the back penguin 350s for my 75 gallon aquariums. Is this enough capacity for the bio load now? Later? Any suggestions?
I raised an @hole green severum 8" that pushed his luck for months before getting his head bitten by my big Oscar. He was a wreck after that and recently succumbed to his injuries and popeye infection. I would love to locate a red shoulder sev though! Stunning.
The Red Shoulders are awesome! I've found the green severums to be the most aggressive out of the color morphs.
Hi Jason, I got a Red Shoulder and a Red Spotted in 3/23/23. The Red is growing beautifully but the Spotted seems to have stayed at a little over an inch. The Red only chaces for a bit after eating. but he is a good inch larger than the Spotted. Should I worry or just give the Spotted more time?
The spotted may be a female and will be smaller than the male.
Have you found them to be slow growers? I got some 1" geo's and red shoulders a few months ago and the geo's seem to be growing almost two times faster than the severums.
I would say they are average growers for me. I've actually found most geos grow fairly slow. : -)
3:07 what is that fish that swam right in front of the severum? Absolutely incredible looking!
That was sold to me as Geophagus surinamensis but is probably altifrons. Probably my favorite fish in the fish room! : -)
I use to Keep severns in 135 gallon 6-ft tank and they did well and there I believe a 75 gallon would be fine for 2 severums in a small community 55 will probably work for a pair and that is so true these fish will eat live plants like crazy I could not even keep java fern in there with mines they even pick at my golden pothos roots!
wow u just answered a question I had...I've got submerged pothos. Do they eat the leaves?
my ph on tap is around 6.8 to 7, but in my 125 with large drift wood and pool filter sand, large severums and silver dollars, the ph is around 7.8
how can i safely lower it, or should i, i want them healthy, and want a couple more....
My green and gold made 8 inches in a 20 gal.but I had hard water.good or bad .I don't know
Hi, question.. would different species of severum mate? Like red shoulder x green, will they mate?
Yes - I currently have a red shoulder and gold that are paired up.
I would love a red shoulder severum but I cannot find one or appropriate size anywhere
Is that a young Frontosa in there with them? I did that for a while too.....mixing continents (and hemispheres, for that matter).....somehow I got away pretty well with it for a while.
I had a turquoise Severum for several years...my son named him King Pen....because he got pretty big. I got him at about an inch in diameter, and he was about 6" when he passed.....really cool fish and one of my favorites I've ever kept. He bit my son once...it was hilarious, haha!
kdm71291 sure is - they’ve been together since they were small. Has worked out well!
Did u just add frontosa to south American community tank.
Both these species have different parameters.. these are soft waters and the fronts are hard water with a min ph of 8.2.. is it really good to mix diff geographic species..
In their natural habitat that is true. However, they were all bred in the same Chicago water and grew up in the same environment (hard water, pH 8.0-8.2). While there are important exceptions, matching the water parameters of many of the common captive bred tropical fish we keep is often unnecessary. In fact, when you go to a local fish store, many make very little effort to adjust water parameters to match the fish's original habitat (imagine how hard that would be for a store with 100s of tanks). Most aren't bred, grown out or kept in water parameters that match their natural habitat. Consistency is often better than achieving water parameters that vary from the water that comes out of your tap.
Sorry for commenting on an old clip, but what sort of fish is it that swims in at 2:12, some sort of Geophagus? It's stunning.
Ya that is Geophagus altifrons
I used to keep Oscars together with Severums and had no problems. They were in a 190 gallon tank. That played a role I suppose.
I think that could be a good setup for both.
Can you recommend tank mates for severums, rainbow cichlids, blue acara, threadfin acara, geophagus tapajos? I have them in a 210 gallon.
Silver Dollars, Rainbow Fish, Roseline Sharks, Cory Cats, Bristlenose Plecos (maybe some super reds), Congo Tetras, Colombian Tetras, Emperor Tetras, Cryptoheros nanoluteus, Sajica, Angelfish, Silver Hatchet Fish, White Skirt Tetras, Phantom Tetras?
I was just looking for information on Red Shoulder Severum as I picked up 10 approximately 2 month olds yesterday! They are absolutely tiny! Any advice as to how to raise them? I really only want to keep two but I imagine it won't be hard to find good homes for the rest of them. Thanks.
It will be very easy to move the others when they start to color up. I got all of mine when they were about the size of a quarter, and even at that size they were easy to feed - love live baby brine, took to flakes without any issues and micro pellets from New Life Spectrum as well.
Hi! What was that purple fish that snuck past the camera around 4:17? I’m looking to buy one, it looks really pretty
Geophagus altifrons?
Do anubias and Java ferns also count under the plants they eat as they're the "less" nice plants (very bitter) to eat?
Oh ya - they love them all! :-)
Love the Severums and love your channel. Can you put rainbows in with them?
Thank you! Yes, I think that combo would work well.
Hey Jason could you do a species profile on the green terror. We had one given to us from a friend that wanted out of the hobby. Its still small and didnt get along with our dempseys. What would you suggest as a possible tank mate for it its in with just a pleco now that also came with it. And will be rehoused in a 75 gallon on its own.
It can be very difficult to add fish to a tank with a full grown Green Terror that starts out in its own tank alone. CIchlids are usually not an option. You could try large rainbow fish or congo tetras - something big that can't be eaten and hope he leaves them alone?
Fourtanaly its not full grown as of yet. Thanks for the advice. Stay safe and God bless
Awesome video. One question though, what fish is the long tailed one that kind of looks like a green and red Ram? I need to have that one. Thank you!
Its an eartheater. Geophagus. They're amazing
@@andrealosinger3866 Cool, I have one about 2 inches long. But it doesn't look like that. Does it mean it'll look like that as it matures?
@@wallygrim3406 there's so many different kinds of geophagus, but most of the bigger ones I've seen have beautiful colors
