  • Welcome to the Musanze City Bike Tour Series, where I invite you to embark on a journey through this captivating city.
My connection with Musanze began in 2014 during a high school trip focused on electricity production for my Physics class. As a science student at Saint Aloys Rwamagana, I had explored many districts in the Southern and Eastern Provinces, but Musanze, nestled in the Northern Province, offered a unique and enchanting experience. Its serene charm against the backdrop of the Rwanda volcano chain left a lasting impression.
What deepened my love for Musanze was its diverse and affordable culinary scene. My visit to the Ntaruka Hydropower plant in Burera District, now my home, sparked my passion for adventure as I learned about electricity generation from the Rugezi Marshland, Burera Lake, and the Ntaruka power plant. Today, I reside at the source of the water that powers Ntaruka Hydropower, and I continue downstream to the Mukungwa power plants. The view of the volcano chain from this vantage point is always exhilarating.
During this bicycle ride, I'm excited to introduce one of my favorite Rwandan cities to you. My dream is to make Musanze my permanent home, waking up to the majestic volcanoes, feeling the refreshing breeze, and savoring healthy, fresh cuisine. I've turned this dream into reality, having conquered all five volcanoes, from Bisoke in March 2022 to Karisimbi in November 2022, Sabyinyo in April 2023, Muhabura in May 2023, and most recently, Gahinga in October 2023. I hope you tell how I have been enjoying Musanze City!
Musanze has been designated as the second city after Kigali and earned the title of a Tourism City. It offers a rich array of attractions, including National Volcano hikes, gorilla trekking, golden monkey expeditions, the Diana Fossey Tombs, Musanze Caves, art galleries, and more. This beautiful city is rapidly evolving.
In the inaugural episode of the Musanze City Bike Tour Series, part of "Cycling in the 1000 Hills of Rwanda," we explore the city center, just minutes away from Gakenke District. The cityscape is changing rapidly, and what struck me first was Musanze's bicycle-friendly character. It's truly remarkable how bicycles are a major mode of transport here.
During my exploration, I pedaled past tall houses, Migano Hotel, the Rwanda Biomedical Center's northern office, Rwanda Police College, Musanze Stadium, the current construction site of Musanze fruits market, and concluded the ride at the beloved La Paillote resto-pizzeria. As you join me on this journey, I invite you to expect an enriching experience as we explore various places and neighborhoods in Musanze, all while testing the hypothesis that Musanze is indeed a bicycle-friendly and safe city for riders.
This promises to be an exciting adventure, and I can't wait to discover more of what Musanze has in store for us!
