I have no doubt that the lock manufacturer (certainly, the engineers who designed the thing) know full well that this lock can be opened in seconds with a mallet or shim. They don't care. What they care about is selling the lock.

My current game is "guess what embarrassing method LPL will use to get into this padlock." I guessed shimming. I failed to guess "hit it with a hammer". My second guess was going to be the padlock bypass tool. This is a fun game.
@@freman it's not a question of room. When you have spring loaded pins engaging the shackle, what happens when you shim is you push the spring back. If you had a super tight shackle path, the lock would actually need extra protection since the smallest grain of sand or a little mud or ice will make it completely inoperable. Trying to protect a lock against shimming by making the shackle path tighter is not a workable idea. A correctly designed lock has ball bearings that lock into the shackle cutouts and are prevented by a turning element from falling back, there is no spring, so you can insert a shim all you want, the gap can be as generous as you want, nothing is gonna happen.
One thing I've learned from this channel about smart locks is that the fancier they try to make the smart technology in the locks, the more corners they cut with the most important aspect of a lock: the mechanical locking mechanisms.
With the polarity of the magnets being different (he shows that on the key) a strong magnet will push some of the pins into a locked position rather than retracting them all.
When I clicked on this video, I was expecting an easy open with a magnet or something, so seeing you just pull out a hammer and *whack* it was just wonderful.

It was the best moment in the film, and was not written in the screenplay-it was supposed to be a fancy axe fight, but Harrison Ford was not doing well learning how to act his part of the fight/had no skill with the axe, and I think after a few bad takes, he suggested to the director he just shoot the guy, and they all loved the idea…
I have recently used the knowledge I have gained here, by removing a lock on my tow bar that had corroded to the point of not taking the key any more. If I had not watched, I may have gone to a lock specialist or mechanic, but, since I do watch, I tried a couple of your brute force ideas, and that got my lock off! THANK YOU!!
I am really glad that LPL tests smart locks without downloading the app. Sure, it is possible that there is a “smart” lock out there that has an app-related feature that is the weakest link, but so far every one he has tested has fallen to basic low-skill attacks, so there is no reason to even look that far.
The Lock Picking Lawyer has to be the largest CZcams channel that only makes 3 minute videos and sometimes he's being kind to make the video 2 minutes.
It should be noted that lock companies aren't exactly designing locks with folk like LPL in mind. His enormous knowledge of locks in general, luxury of time and resources to be able to inspect the workings of individual locks, and the ability to buy/make specialty tools to bypass mechanisms aren't things the average thief is going to possess. The goal of most lock/safe companies is to increase the amount of time it takes to get at whatever's being protected (thus raising the risk of discovery) and/or make difficult to get inside without damaging the contents. To be fair, LPL does feature a lot of locks/safes that fail even at that basic level.... but he also shows solutions that just aren't going to be possible for crimes of opportunity quite a bit.

The person I was responding to was talking about lock companies in general and so was I. Quite simply, it's not possible to create a lock or safe that cannot be opened and/or bypassed without the key. Of course it's inexcusable to sell a privacy lock as a security lock, but it's insane to think anyone's going to design a lock that cannot be picked or hacked.

I’m not particularly “into” locks etc. but I’ve watched enough of these videos to have them occasionally appear in my feed. That said, it is interesting and surprising to see how easily so many locks are defeated. I guess that in many situations it’s down to just making defeating a lock and gaining non-permitted access enough of a hassle and enough of a spectacle to discourage such efforts. It’s good to know how easy it is to defeat so many locks so that adequate measures can be taken when security is paramount. 👍🏻
The rubber boot is so close to defeating the second attack. If there were metal boots as part of the shackle, there wouldn't have been any way to insert the shim.
The rubber is normally intended to prevent water from entering the lock in case it is used outdoors. As they didn't have locking on both sides of the shackle you instantly know they have cut a lot of corners to keep cost down.
It is fun to watch him humiliate bad lock companies, but I have to say that I wish for more great locks and recommendations on this channel. I liked for example the video on the Bowley lock.
well, you can lose your RFID tags, misplace the magnetic key, have your smartphone battery die, and forget the numeric code - and still be able to open this lock! isn’t it smart?
What might be fascinating is for you to show us how you approach a new lock. What low skill attack to you try first? What's next? All the way down the list to a successful entry even if it ends with the key. ( I doubt a lock would make it that far )
First try: can you shim it with one shim. If not try two. If you can shim it, see if you can also whack it. I have no idea what order of steps he uses after that, but I'm fairly confident those are the first steps for any padlock that uses a push pull hasp (but probably not for warded key/skeleton key type padlocks with hinged hasps).
He always seems to start by determining what he can about the lock's construction based on his extensive knowledge of lock engineering before he ever decides on an attack to use, so there are a lot of attacks he doesn't try before he gets to success most of the time.
Legal to sell I can see, but the manufacturers should be held liable for loss of property if it was due to a design flaw they knew about, but didn't tell the customers.
Most of these locks certainly fall under false advertising, and sometimes, they would even qualify as fraud. Many of them assert being pick-proof despite that bring demonstrably false or lie about having a [insert metallic alloy] core to the shackle or body. Generally, outright lying about a product's qualities is a great way to get sued.
I often get a chuckle from these simple to open with ordinary tools fancy locks, thanks. Makes me wonder how often, if ever, the manufacturers contact you?
@lockpickinglawyer I definitely understand not wanting to download apps on your personal device, but have you considered getting a cheap burner and setting it up with a burner account? A lot of these smart locks are doing the app thing and it might be interesting to see if there are additional weaknesses going that route. Probably not worth it when all you need is a shim or a mallet, but maybe worth looking at on deadbolts and similar...

This is incredibly backwards. Pretty sure that most engineers are well aware of the faults intentionally included into products as a result of limitations imposed by suits.
It boils down to the good ol' green stuff, locks are designed by engineers but ok'ed by cost accountants so every cent shaved off the unit prize is a win for the company regardless of the fact that the changes they insist on will make the product worse in most cases
I found hitting most with a hard object worked for almost all cheap padlocks. I remember in high school bashing locks for people with a stick / club I made in wood shop.
Great video as always LPL. The magnetic key has reminded me of something, and I wonder if it could change lockmaking in a revolutionary way. Smarter Every Day # 153 featured polymagnets, printed magnets where they could completely customize the magnetic fields so that it's just not repel or attract of varying strengths, but could do both and create a kind of cushion. Could that be used in keys to magnetically move lock pins to certain heights just like a key would, but not allow direct physical access? You'd have to have a key with the specific printed polymagnets to get the right combination of magnetic fields.
Maybe you're overthinking it. The cushion thing is a curiosity applicable when you need to have the levitating effect. Inside lock body we don't care much if counterbalancing is done by levitate-y magnetic forces both ways (repel and attract) or by physical springs from inside and magnetic forces from keyside.
The right combination of magnetic fields can also be decoded by Hall effect and other sensors. (Mobile phone cases have magnets in them that phones sense, to tell "original" and cheap imitations apart.) I highly doubt the lock in this video used moving parts to be attracted or repelled from the key. Edit: well the product description says "Mechanical Keys as backup" so maybe it used moving magnets indeed.
@@u1zha, I don't think you've actually addressed my question. Please watch the Smarter Every Day video I referenced about polymagnets. Polymagnets are not moving magnets, they're printed. This is an emerging technology. The sensors may indeed be able to decode the magnetic field, but actually having the ability to print the correct polymanget key is something different.
How the hell do they build a lock that opens with a hammer? I am a mechnical enginner with +20 years of designing stuff of all kind, I would have to take a deep think of how to do it. + optimaze the spring load needed so it opens with a light hit, but not to light. Seems to have gone in some serious design work to tune this function.
Easy, just do as the did. Use only a locking lug on one side of the shackle. Any lock costing more than $5 has locking on both sides of the shackle to prevent this easy hammer tap. It also requires that you shim both sides to get it open. A lock costing $10 or more should have so tight holes to the shackle that shimming is impossible. On electronic locks you could also have problems with a strong magnet affecting the solenoid or in this case that the entire front looks like it is made of plastic. Destructive opening by applying brute force or lots of heat to the front of this lock....
The app should work on a phone that is just connected to Wi-Fi, without a SIM, so get a cheap aneroid phone and set up a separate email address that you only use for such tests and then you have to give out zero personal info. You could even set up a VPN network so the phone has no access to you personal network. Even if it requires a working phone number, that is also something that could be set up and only used for such projects without having to give the app you personal number. You have used this reason before and I thought back then that is is something that would be VERY easy to work around.
While possible to work around, what value does "here is the mechanism rendered meaningless by this hammer working as intended" add? Like he absolutely *could* do all these things, but would this video have been any better if he had punched in a code before hitting it with the mallet? No use spending time and money on things you're going to promptly ignore regardless!

Last time I was this early to an LPL video he was still the Lock Picking Law Student.

He's already done them in older videos. There isn't really any new lock designs coming out that are honest and hard to open.

The rubber boot is so close to defeating the second attack. If there were metal boots as part of the shackle, there wouldn't have been any way to insert the shim.
Okay, but that would increase the production costs slightly and would cut into the company's PROFIT!!!!!
The rubber is normally intended to prevent water from entering the lock in case it is used outdoors. As they didn't have locking on both sides of the shackle you instantly know they have cut a lot of corners to keep cost down.
The rubber is there to make sure rust or dirt can't make it difficult to insert the shim. 😁

well, you can lose your RFID tags, misplace the magnetic key, have your smartphone battery die, and forget the numeric code - and still be able to open this lock! isn’t it smart?

I love this man. He would be perfect in a post-apocalyptic setting as he could pick any lock with no trouble. If the lock is rusted then, hammer time.
What might be fascinating is for you to show us how you approach a new lock. What low skill attack to you try first? What's next? All the way down the list to a successful entry even if it ends with the key. ( I doubt a lock would make it that far )
The 2nd Stuff Made Here lock if it had the back plate added to it would come close.....
First try: can you shim it with one shim. If not try two. If you can shim it, see if you can also whack it. I have no idea what order of steps he uses after that, but I'm fairly confident those are the first steps for any padlock that uses a push pull hasp (but probably not for warded key/skeleton key type padlocks with hinged hasps).
He always seems to start by determining what he can about the lock's construction based on his extensive knowledge of lock engineering before he ever decides on an attack to use, so there are a lot of attacks he doesn't try before he gets to success most of the time.
How it is even legal to sell these useless locks is beyond everything....
Legal to sell I can see, but the manufacturers should be held liable for loss of property if it was due to a design flaw they knew about, but didn't tell the customers.
They may not be completely useless. Depends on your taste in paper weights.

Most of these locks certainly fall under false advertising, and sometimes, they would even qualify as fraud. Many of them assert being pick-proof despite that bring demonstrably false or lie about having a [insert metallic alloy] core to the shackle or body. Generally, outright lying about a product's qualities is a great way to get sued.

I often get a chuckle from these simple to open with ordinary tools fancy locks, thanks. Makes me wonder how often, if ever, the manufacturers contact you?
@lockpickinglawyer I definitely understand not wanting to download apps on your personal device, but have you considered getting a cheap burner and setting it up with a burner account? A lot of these smart locks are doing the app thing and it might be interesting to see if there are additional weaknesses going that route. Probably not worth it when all you need is a shim or a mallet, but maybe worth looking at on deadbolts and similar...

This is incredibly backwards. Pretty sure that most engineers are well aware of the faults intentionally included into products as a result of limitations imposed by suits.

Because then they'd have to build quality locks. That takes thought and engineering.
It boils down to the good ol' green stuff, locks are designed by engineers but ok'ed by cost accountants so every cent shaved off the unit prize is a win for the company regardless of the fact that the changes they insist on will make the product worse in most cases

I found hitting most with a hard object worked for almost all cheap padlocks. I remember in high school bashing locks for people with a stick / club I made in wood shop.

Great video as always LPL. The magnetic key has reminded me of something, and I wonder if it could change lockmaking in a revolutionary way. Smarter Every Day # 153 featured polymagnets, printed magnets where they could completely customize the magnetic fields so that it's just not repel or attract of varying strengths, but could do both and create a kind of cushion. Could that be used in keys to magnetically move lock pins to certain heights just like a key would, but not allow direct physical access? You'd have to have a key with the specific printed polymagnets to get the right combination of magnetic fields.
and you would ALSO have to close all the zero skill openings

Maybe you're overthinking it. The cushion thing is a curiosity applicable when you need to have the levitating effect. Inside lock body we don't care much if counterbalancing is done by levitate-y magnetic forces both ways (repel and attract) or by physical springs from inside and magnetic forces from keyside.
The right combination of magnetic fields can also be decoded by Hall effect and other sensors. (Mobile phone cases have magnets in them that phones sense, to tell "original" and cheap imitations apart.) I highly doubt the lock in this video used moving parts to be attracted or repelled from the key.
Edit: well the product description says "Mechanical Keys as backup" so maybe it used moving magnets indeed.
@@u1zha, I don't think you've actually addressed my question. Please watch the Smarter Every Day video I referenced about polymagnets. Polymagnets are not moving magnets, they're printed. This is an emerging technology. The sensors may indeed be able to decode the magnetic field, but actually having the ability to print the correct polymanget key is something different.
How the hell do they build a lock that opens with a hammer? I am a mechnical enginner with +20 years of designing stuff of all kind, I would have to take a deep think of how to do it. + optimaze the spring load needed so it opens with a light hit, but not to light. Seems to have gone in some serious design work to tune this function.
The only thing I can think of is it the better ways of securing the shackle are patented and the lock makers don’t want to pay the royalty fee.
I guess they just optimize it to the point that gravity alone without solenoid help wouldn't pull the spring loaded lip out... And then ship it
Easy, just do as the did. Use only a locking lug on one side of the shackle. Any lock costing more than $5 has locking on both sides of the shackle to prevent this easy hammer tap. It also requires that you shim both sides to get it open.
A lock costing $10 or more should have so tight holes to the shackle that shimming is impossible.
On electronic locks you could also have problems with a strong magnet affecting the solenoid or in this case that the entire front looks like it is made of plastic. Destructive opening by applying brute force or lots of heat to the front of this lock....

The app should work on a phone that is just connected to Wi-Fi, without a SIM, so get a cheap aneroid phone and set up a separate email address that you only use for such tests and then you have to give out zero personal info. You could even set up a VPN network so the phone has no access to you personal network. Even if it requires a working phone number, that is also something that could be set up and only used for such projects without having to give the app you personal number.
You have used this reason before and I thought back then that is is something that would be VERY easy to work around.
While possible to work around, what value does "here is the mechanism rendered meaningless by this hammer working as intended" add? Like he absolutely *could* do all these things, but would this video have been any better if he had punched in a code before hitting it with the mallet? No use spending time and money on things you're going to promptly ignore regardless!
@@mentosman8 Had the reason given, been it is so easy to open I will not bother with the app, that would have been a different matter, I was responding to the reason LPL gave, and as smart devices crop up from time to time such a isolated cheap smart phone may be a worth getting.
