Like a real big one that can shoot miles - and you can get ones that shoot a lot, lot more bullets than you'd expect; and you can get small ones you can hide in your waistband - in some places this is totally legal. The weird thing about small guns is that they are actually designed to kill people - flame throwers are more dangerous because they're designed to make a small, relatively cold flame so you never know when it might suddenly kill someone.

And yeah, for autos in teh states you can have them you need a class 3 license which is an extensive process.
In the end, the way most people decide whether a gun is fine or not is whether it looks scary to them because they are completely uneducated on the topic.
