      went to goodwill yesterday and bought a macro lens. not the best but not bad either. Needed a macro to shoot wedding rings and now I don’t have to go out and pay $$. I got mine for $3 and a great camera bad for $5 🤗 Just make it a routine to go to the thrift stores or pawn shops every week. You bound to find something once in a while. I also found a working twin lens camera a few years back.

    Willem, the Canon A-1 was originally a semi professional camera when it was released. Definitely not a budget option. The AE-1 was the cheaper amateur enthusiast option. The AE-1 commands higher prices now simply because it has been over hyped and is frequently recommended as a beginners camera.

    • @hahaahah7214
      @hahaahah7214 Před 2 lety +1

      Unfortunately nowadays the AE 1 has some flex issues (the crammed circuit board that’s at the top) while the A1 doesn’t have that problem to my knowledge. Plus the AE 1 uses a finicky plastic piece for both the ISO and the shutter speed selector which you either change the film ISO with or break

      @@hahaahah7214 Not me with an AE-1 that's existed and used since the 80s. My father used it and handed it down to me.. Maybe you just need to take better care of things?The only problem it has is dirt in the creases. Pretty sure some of that dirt is older than me.

    • @hahaahah7214
      @hahaahah7214 Před rokem

      @@theren8311 the flex breaking is an issue no matter how good you take care of it, just will it happen is left to rng. Mine was actually affecting the shutter speed because the mirror wouldn't move in the right speed.

Years ago, when a friend wanted to get into photography, I bought him an A-1 because it gave him the option for use from fully manual to fully automatic. Also, I didn't want him borrowing my Nikon lenses.

      Yeah mine was pretty easy to resolve. I found it more effective going in under the lens mount (I have fixed three AE-1, an AE-1 Program and an A-1 with this issue), however you can also go in through the bottom. Either way you will need an oiling syringe.

  • @NewMacFan
    @NewMacFan Před 4 lety

    The cuffing noise comes from the mirror dampening mechanism that releases the mirror back down. I fixed that on my A-1 by applying a small drop of oil into the gear box. This happens when after all these years the original lubricants used for the plastic gears gets a little sticky or even hardens.

  • @genghis2510
    @genghis2510 Před 4 lety +3

    Canon A-1 is battery dependent (like DSLRs now) meaning you can't take a photo without it's 6 volt battery that's very hard or impossible to come by. If you want to try film photography chose a hybrid SLR - meaning it can take photos without battery from bulb setting, flash synch up to its fastest mechanical shutter speed (1/2000) and with battery the shutter speeds can go below flash synch speed up to 30 seconds. Look for Nikon F3 or F2 photomic or Canon F1 new or its older F1 (80's top of the line SLRs) that are on give away prices. Film cameras have no in-body photo enhancements like current DSLRs. Film camera photos color science are 100% dependent on the lens quality.

    also the shutter noise is from the gears being dry, you have to undo these tiny screws pull the face plate off and jam a needle with a bend in it blindly into a corner and hope you dont drown the thing with oil, after that you put it back together and it's good to go (unless you drown it in oil and then it's prolly bad) i dunno anything about cameras, i have the A-1 but i dunno where to get a lens for it or how to find one that fits on it, or what kind to get theres a million lenseseses that show up when i do a search

      Really !!! Mine is already mothballed with accessories such as data back and winder. A-1 is the first SLR camera to be fully automatic with Auto, Program, Shutter Priority, Aperture Priority, stopped-down, etc. settings all in one SLR camera body. Then, when you buy a film interchangeable lens SLR camera, you're asked whether you want an aperture priority (user sets aperture, camera body sets shutter speed) camera or a shutter priority (user sets shutter speed, camera body sets aperture) camera. By the way, can you please tell me where can we buy a 6 volt battery?

    • @Gabez82
      @Gabez82 Před 4 lety +1

      genghis2510 In 1977, the first multi-mode SLR was the Minolta XD11, which is also a wonderful quality camera, it too was technically capable of Program mode in a sense that the XD11 would automatically change the shutter speed if exposure was not correctly set by the user. I was also lucky to find a seller on ebay that had a XD11 in new in box too!... But then Canon one-upped Minolta, and released the awesome A1, which had more modes, just as you mentioned, Aperture and Shutter, plus it had a dedicated Program mode, Flash and Stop Down modes, which was more advanced than the Minolta XD11. I order my 6v batteries from Ebay. Don’t forget to replace your light seals on any old camera if you haven’t done so, nothing worse than light leaks ruining photos. Happy Shootin! 📸📸📸

    See a few comments about it running on a battery. Not much of an issue. If anything, the first A-1 I owned had an issue with the sprocket reel which cracked and the pin fell out, leaving it useless. But I purchased a second A-1 because of it's pretty versatile, love it

    with the little shutter cough, its caused by dry lubricants in the mirror box, it's not too much of a problem and is an easy one to fix, if you leave it too long it makes the mirror not flick up early enough and you start getting underexposure and dark strips on your images so can be a pain

    Cool. I learned on an AE1p. Sold the whole lot to a student photographer to make way for a Canon 60D lol. Wouldn’t mind trying it again. I find my old 60d with the pancake 40mm is great for a walk around.

    to fix that noise: just grab a needle and some gun oil, remove the bottom cover and feed the needles through. There's a spot you gotta feel for but all it takes is like 2-3 drops of oil and it'll be silent and healthy. There's a video on youtube that shows you better than i can explain lol

    Hey guys/Willem a few questions,
    I'm really at a beginners stage, so maybe my questions sound a bit stupid.
    - Why should you shoot 400 before 800? 5:48
    - Why is it called 35 mm? Because it is 3.5 cm's wide film?
    - What is the f4, f5/6 you are talking about Willem? -> Why does it get so soft? 7:50
    Hope you can help me out, I just dived into film photography and bought this camera.
    Your videos are a massive help for beginners! Thanks for that!
    Have a nice day,
    Greetings from Belgium

    I find myself super lucky to have gotten an a1, a 28-80 lens, a strap, and a sunpak flash for $40. All works perfectly. Just keep your eyes open guys, good deals are out there!
    Also your A1 in the video has the squeal. Its easy to fix, just oil the gear behind the top left mount screw. Mine did it and I fixed it for less than $1

    Awesome work Willem. My favorite thing to do with my A-1 is put some Takumar primes on with an m42-FD adapter. Still lets you shoot in aperture priority and you get the legendary optics of takumar glass with the great metering and utilitarian feel of the A-1.
