And yeah, that's exactly what happened here. Game development isn't an easy job, that's why triple A studios can burn through millions of dollars and staff hundreds of people. @133hardrock Před 3 lety +5

I doubt they ever release it. That will take the only defense the fanatics have for it - it not being finished that's why it's not perfect yet. Star Citizen is Eve Online + No Man's Sky + Elite Dangerous + something like Mass Effect and I highly doubt it can ever be achieved with how many features and desires the devs and players have for it. I think the devs were always afraid to release it because of the hype and fear that disappointed players will not buy ships. If they released it and it ended up being a worse Eve Online but with planet interaction, I doubt players would have stayed for long. Eve barely retains new players and lives because of its long history and player-shaped space during its 18 years. Star Citizen lacks all that and will require ton of commitment from players - that is, if it was ever planned to be released. It could have been a scam from the start.

Like, I'm genuinely curious at what point devs changed their attitude. Was it the money? Or was it the realization that the game in their heads is an impossible dream? The thing a lot of people don't understand, is that Star Citizen isn't supposed to be just like any other game. They want to make a full, extremely real and vast simulator. From what they have said, they are relatively close to finishing their first system and have begun production on the next one. And there will be 100. And after they finish this one, and get some of the backend technology they want, such as their server meshing and iCache system, then they say it will be relatively easy for them to produce system with pretty high detail.

When you make a mistake - be it being found out in a lie or otherwise being found out doing something wrong - there's a right way and a wrong way to proceed. The instinctive reaction is try and cover it up or to get defensive. But those responses almost always make things worse. Instead, if you own up to your mistake and make a genuine effort to fix it as well as taking steps to ensure it won't be repeated, well people really appreciate it.

Ok. Chicago Reacts... there is seriously something wrong with you. When I first saw this video by myself, it was immediately obvious that Sean was NOT a liar (at least not beyond what is expected of normal people). YOU...YOU kept insisting Sean was a liar. Multiple multiple times it was explained in explicit detail how the truth of "No Man's Sky" was far more complicated than some random developer lying for a quick buck.
Internet Historian told you outright that at the time, Hello Games thought they could pull everything off, but the Sony deal, plus lack of time, plus interview talk, plus realities of journalism, plus $60 price tag, PLUS the fact that Sean was literally forbidden from telling the truth (reeling back expectations) meant he was a victim of circumstance.
Throughout this reaction you weren't listening to a thing being said. What was actually covered in the first half was the insane hype followed by painful reality, expectations followed by result; but you interpreted it all as lying initially and you never stopped to confirm and you never allowed yourself the time to gather more information. You were so busy being angry that you lost multiple opportunities to learn anything new. Hell! You were so hellbent on being angry that you (in a moment of arrogance) declared how rubbish it was that the video was called "The Engoodening of No Man's Sky." You hadn't finished watching the video and yet you ran your mouth as if you knew any better. Ate your words pretty hard didn't ya?
I am deathly serious when I say this: Chicago Reacts...you are mentally ill. I am not trying to be a dick. I have extensive experience with human psychology and I'm telling you the hard truth. You get angry way too easy. You don't focus or listen to anything, especially when you get angry or fearful. You lack self-control, you lack focus, you lack self-awareness, you virtue signal like crazy, and you talk as if you're a God damned superhero of moral virtue who has more answers than he really does. If someone wanted to, they could manipulate you like a puppet on strings, and you'd be none the wiser.
I say all this in the hopes that you see this and seriously confront whatever hidden pain has you knotted up so much. You talk as if you're a good man but you're not; no one is; and that's the whole point. You are selling yourself short, and you don't even realize it.

Fun fact: "Lying" is how all video game PR is done, you tell the audience what will be in the game, despite the fact that the game doesn't even exist yet and is still in prototyping stages, so unless you have a studio that's able to tell whether or not something is possible within 2 years of development, which is impossible for an indie studio to do, then you're kind of just screwed because you have to say what you want to put in the game and just gamble on whether or not it's actually possible and when you have AAA investors, then even by the time you find out that it's impossible, you're not allowed to tell anyone. This means that, in actuality, Sean wasn't lying on purpose, he was just putting forth all of the plans without being able to tell if they were too ambitious or not.

I feel Star Citizen is in a complicated state. Some hate it deeply some love it religiously. I do like the game for the way it looks and feels and how far it came but still can see many problems. There are many Bugs, Servers are small and missions (+ the reputation system) need to be improved to make the gameplay loops motivating in the long term perspective. But for a space simulator it is entertaining, for me and my friends at least. It can definitely be frustrating at times and it is far from a persistently pleasant experience. But it is in alpha still and it has its moments (sometimes it is just breathtakingly beautiful for example). We play the game every time a new update arrives to play around with. It just seems like the scope of this game is simply gigantic and that takes a long time taking small steps. My scepsis will be fully gone if the new persistent Server Cashing (ICash for those interested) comes this or next year. That would be something more of a more substantial step to a playable game than just new missions or a new ship. I have also played in the first Server wide collaborative event this year and I think I got small glimpse of the potential that the game has. Time will tell if the game will release to the promised extend. I feel, for what fun I got, my money was well spent.

There are Indie Devs who have an amazing relationship to their fans and community, took just as long or longer to make their game, also started from scratch, but never had to deal with any of this hype and Deadline crap, which only serves ONE purpose.
To make the investors of the Publisher happy. Noone gives a shit about the players, noone gives a shit about the product, the only thing anyone actually is concerned about is Investor money.
And that is how you ruin literally anything. Could be the best thing ever invented, you get Investors involved and it becomes a matter of "How many people can we screw over at the lowest effort"

There are quite a number of deep space exploration. Star citizen is definitely one of them but another popular one is Eve online. They are great games but what No Mans Sky does better than those titles is accessibility. Getting started in Eve online is a major challenge. It takes dozens even hundreds of hours for the game to truly open up and show its brilliance. A strong loyal fanbase but it can be very intimidating to new players. No Mans Sky is very beginner friendly and has enough complexity and nuance for the hardcore fans. Great reaction to an unbelievable story of redemption

That's insane that the guy REPORTING on the delay got death threats. Like sending death threats to the devs themselves is insane, but sending it to a guy who had literally nothing to do with the delay and was just telling you about it makes absolutely 0 sense

In Sean's defense, a lot of the promises made were initiated by the interviewers who were too hyped for the game and Sean couldnt really just flat out say No to them since they were already contracted by Sony which means he couldnt talk his game down.
Interviewer: I am so excited by this game. Will it allow me to become the god emperor of the universe, spawning trillions of overly buff soldiers in my visage who will willingly throw anyone named John into the lava pits?
Sean: (thats not really something in our planned development roadmap but I cant say no to it because it would make sony look bad)
    Sean: Y-y-yes?

Ah, Star Citizen... The game that calls itself 'unfinished', but has the gal to charge you 20k dollars in MACROtransactions.

IH videos are the only ones I don't skip through the ads lol and legitimately, this video is a 'feel-good' hit. It's constructed like a movie to show the rise, fall, and redemption of Hello Games, and you honestly get a great feeling by the end. I did, at least. I didn't play at launch, I jumped in just before Atlas Rises, and then compared to how the game is now (haven't played since the Expeditions update) it's been drastically overhauled and refined into a much better, albeit entirely different game from when I started.

Sean Murray is a lesson in why you should never ever make lead developer do PR.
"Is this feature that you yourself are currently working on with intention to put in in the game, going to be in the game?"
    "Yes."

My experience playing this game lasted 14 hours. 12 of which were in the second system because the game bugged out and the warp cell i crafted didn't complete the quest which gives you the crafting recipe for the warp cells (fuel needed to FTL jump between systems so you don't take literal years flying). I spent the next 12 hours looping around planets in that system looking for the elusive location that would sell/give me the warp cell recipe. Millions and millions of credits, and like 20 inventory expansions later I found the warp cell recipe, made one, warped to a new system and then quit the game and went and played Astroneer instead.
The planets were pretty, but 2 of the 5 in that system were literally indentical.
I've come back from time to time, but the performance still isn't where I'd like it to be.

The irony is that the game was fun at launch, but people severely overestimated what would be in it. Every time it gets a new update they add a ton of cool stuff that just makes it better.

i wouldnt out right call it "fun", but it was a focused experience for a particular audience. the problem was, sony 's deal made the game seem bigger than they were prepared to deliver.
