When a lot of people around me lost it crying it was a dark time when they took place in 86. I was at GSU in Atlanta when it happened. During my lunch break between classes, I heard a report on my Walkman radio and went into the student centre to watch it on TV. The next day, we had a memorial service in the chapel. Together, many students of various faiths were together and even prayed and sang without any rancor that I could see. It was different on 9/11, but I had already graduated and working by then. Still, we should remember: "Never forget" (for both).

      The only reason Star Trek was having the Dominion war was because Babylon 5 was having the shadow war that was getting more views. I guess Babylon 5 showed Star Trek how to get more viewers to tune in. Anyway thanks Babylon Five for turning Star Trek from space sissies to almost badass. The UFP space hippies still have some ways to go from being bully magnets but they are starting grow a sit.

    • @time391
      @time391 Před rokem +4

      @@neganrex5693 To be fair, DS9 wasn't like any of the other Star Trek shows before or ever since, due to the unrelenting realpolitik of Captain Sisko. He was a religiou leader, a military commander, and one of the few Starfleet officers willing to do what was needed to secure peace in the midst of a rising Dominion aggression and plots against the Federation. TNG was an era of peace that only got shattered by the Borg, but it was still mostly peaceful with a few flare-ups. DS9 was unstable era of conflict with huge stakes.
      Beyond that, DS9 introduced elements other star trek shows have tried and failed to incorporate properly like Section 31, a spy agency that was secret that acted as judge, jury, and executioner. All the other shows after tried to copy it, tried to conceive stories around this mysterious secret police/intelligence agency, but failed miserably. To me, Star Trek revealed the reality and social commentary about the costs of civilization and nationhood, whether it's Romulan Tal Shiar or Cardassian Obsidian Order being akin to Russian FSB and Chinese MIS agencies versus Federation's Section 31 akin to US own NSA agency, no nation-state democratic or totalitarian can maintain itself without such means. Something most Trekkies back then and now fail to accept or want to accept is that such tools are necessary to preserve paradise in whatever form the civilization behind them wants. Kind of kills that notion of individuality and freedom being ultimate goals.
      Then, there was Sisko's false flag operation against the Romulans in order to win the War against the Dominion. No other Star Trek or Sci-Fi show to that point had ever done something like In the Pale Moonlight, because no one dared to challenge the notion that the ends justify the means. He willingly allowed another nation to send an army to fight for his in order to stave off defeat. Were his goals noble? Depends on the eye of the beholder, humanity would agree it was, but Romulans and Dominion Citizens who died due to his actions would call him a war criminal. However, they won the war and ultimately that is what mattered, survival of the Federation first rather than morality or ethics. Even Babylon 5 didn't go down that route, Sheridan and Delenn most controversial actions like using telepaths as suicide bombers was a pale shadow to the billions of lives Sisko and Garak eventually killed through their actions.
      That kind of social commentary is far more controversial than talking about gender, race, or ethnic identity because at its core, it challenges the very notion of liberty and free will. DS9 was beyond Woke, it was fully awake and dealt with reality rather than pretending little issues define it. Victory is life, indeed.

    This is a event in trek history I wish they would have explored in Enterprise. This was great and I loved the ending. "The future does not belong to the faint hearted" Challenger making the sacrifice play here was great story telling. Keep it coming and thanks for your efforts.

      @@paulus121212 I wouldn't describe ENT S4 as "they didn't care anymore". It was more a desperation thing - they were willing to experiment, they wanted to impress, they wanted to answer a lot of loose canon questions, they wanted to give Star Trek a graceful and majestic sendoff, they were hoping that wide appeal to fans might keep the show on air for another season.
      They might have even succeeded if not for pompous old Riker's uninvited and unwanted appearance in the final episode.

      @@paulus121212 The only reason I can think for ENT to have flopped, at least among diehard Trekkies, is the focus they had on the 'Temporal Cold War' arc in the first 3 seasons. It certainly jarred me a bit, but when I saw what they were moving towards in Season 4, I got very excited and thought ENT finally found its footing... At least until it was cancelled. Damn shame too, but apparently there's been a growing movement to bring Enterprise back and continue where it left off. I just hope they don't taint it with any of Discovery's nu-Trek garbage if they do.

    It's interesting to note that some of the Romulan warships bore a stark resemblance to _KLINGON_ battlecruisers; the only known-albeit, brief-alliance between those two powers was in the late 2260s (ST: TOS 'The Enterprise Incident'). As to nukes being used by BOTH sides, anti-matter warheads were not cheap; anti-matter was primarily used for warp propulsion.

    • @eddieschwab864
      @eddieschwab864 Před 2 lety

      Well a civilization devoted to warfare against their neighbors inevitably will have certain types of vessels devoted to certain types of duty. And by virtue of that their layout would almost certainly be similar. But in this case the Klingons would have copied the design for the D7 from that dreadnought design... but if you watch any of the stuff related to Axanar, several classes of their ships follow that layout design. But it certainly makes sense because having the bulk of the armaments and the PowerPlant separate from much of the crew complement is essentially a sensible design. Plus the idea of being able to separate in the event of a disaster it's one thing to die in honorable combat but to die senselessly due to a core breach that would need to be a method of Starship separation. Plus you would have any weapons that could be potentially unstable in the section with the engine core.
