  • Before you can drive, you need to correctly position your mirrors to give you the best possible view of your surroundings. In the video, we cover what you should see in each one of your mirrors.

    You don't need to see the car behind you in your side view mirror because you can see them in your rearview mirror. It makes no sense to see the same thing in both mirrors and create a blind spot when you can point the side view mirrors at your blind spot and see all around you. I have my mirrors adjusted the way AAA Auto club, The Society of Automotive Engineers, Car & Driver magazine, and other experts recommend, at what people call the blind spot. I know where everything is around my car at all times as I drive because I check my mirrors often in a forward, center mirror, forward, left side mirror, forward, and right side mirror pattern. With a couple glances directly to my left and right side for when someone is next to me. There is no time when a car, motorcycle, bicycle, pedestrian, etc. disappears completely from my sight. Of course, you check over your shoulder as a double check after checking your side mirrors as a double check, and/or someone is changing lanes to the lane you are trying to move to from 2 lanes away. Your opinion is based on the way you are used to adjusting your mirrors, not because it's safer.

      you are agreeing with the wrong method. You do NOT need to see the rear quarter panel of your vehicle. You need to adjust the mirror properly to eliminate all blind spots. You also do not take your eyes off of the direction of travel. You do not turn your head to the side or even rearward while traveling forward. That is why you have your mirrors adjusted properly and will not have the blind spots.
      The guy in this video is absolutely telling the wrong manner in which to have the mirrors adjusted.

  • @tahoejohnny3991
    @tahoejohnny3991 Před rokem +3

    There is no reason to use your side view mirrors to look at the backup your car. This still leaves a blind spot.

    • @ZulaDrivingSchool
      @ZulaDrivingSchool  Před rokem

      Yes there is. You need to be able to see the driver in the vehicle directly behind you. Your side mirror can tell you if you see their head shifting to one direction when they are planning on doing a lane change shortly.
      The idea of setting your side mirrors far out enough where you no longer see the side of your car to minimize your blind spot is no longer the correct ideology being taught. You can never really eliminate the blind spot around your vehicle and hence why you need to perform a shoulder check.

    • @tahoejohnny3991
      @tahoejohnny3991 Před rokem +3

      @@ZulaDrivingSchool With al respect, the REAR view mirror is to see the driver in the vehicle behind them. The SIDE view mirror is to see if there is a car in the blind spot.
      My students can absolutely see any car in any placement without having to look over the shoulder, BUT, I ALWAYS tell them to check look over their shoulder to DOUBLE CHECK.
      Shoulder check is simply a Double Check and positioning mirrors as I suggest requires only one look over the shoulder. Positioning side view mirrors to see a portion of the car, which serves little use, creates a blind spot and thus requires multiple shoulder check until it is clear.
      Please check with the The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), AAA, MotorTrend, Motor Biscuit, Car & Driver, and you will find there is no need to see the side of your car. I have also spoken with several current race car drivers, including one of the Andretti drivers and they confirmed this. Driver Edge out of Las Vegas also teaches the correct method.
      Again, I state with all respect, but it is important we keep our drivers safe.

    • @ZulaDrivingSchool
      @ZulaDrivingSchool  Před rokem

      @@tahoejohnny3991 A shoulder check serves a different purpose than a side mirror check. A shoulder check tells a driver about dangers that are immediately within their blind spot. The side mirror check will show a driver dangers that are further back and approaching from the sides of the vehicle. There is going to come a point when an approaching vehicle disappears out of the side mirror and directly into the blind spot. There is no amount of mirror adjustment that a driver can make to completely eliminate the need for a shoulder check, or to make it redundant. I am happy to make a video demonstrating this concept as there seems to be a lot of confusion and misinformation from different sources on this. This is not based on a personal opinion, but from official teaching guidelines within our jurisdiction.

      There is No Need to see the rear quarter panel of your vehicle. It is going go be there. The "reference point" is the area beside the car.
      You CAN SEE the driver behind you IN THE CENTER REAR VIEW MIRROR! That BULL S about "head shifting" is completely nonsense.
      You ABSOLUTELY CAN ELIMINATE ALL BLIND SPOTS with Properly Adjusted Mirrors, and the method you are using is WRONG, and anyone that says differently in this day and age, after it has been Proven thusly, is ignorant to the facts and Should NOT EVER be telling anyone how to adjust their mirrors, especially a Driving Instructor!

    Terrible advice.. side view mirrors are to see the side, not rear. Adjust them properly to minimize your blind spots. A vehicle leaving your rear view is when you should start seeing them on your driver side view mirror.

      You can adjust the side mirrors as you become more familiar with driving. Your side mirrors will not completely eliminate your blindspot regardless of how you set them, hence the need for shoulder checks.

    You are Absolutely WRONG. You do NOT NEED to have any of your vehicle showing in the side mirrors. You can see all of the area behind you in the center mirror. the side mirrors are Not designed to be looking behind you. you need the side mirrors to be focused on the area BESIDE the vehicle. This eliminates ALL Blind Spots. Your method CREATES BLIND SPOTS, and as a driving instructor, you are supposed to be teaching the proper methods.

    • @ZulaDrivingSchool
      @ZulaDrivingSchool  Před rokem

      Hi Jeremiah, while pushing the side mirrors until you cannot see the side of our vehicle can reduce blind spots, the question becomes then when would you ever need to see the side of your vehicle? Let's say you've stopped in traffic and a larger vehicle, like a van with tinted windows or a truck stops behind you. If you can't see through their vehicle from your review view mirror and another driver comes up behind them too quickly to stop in time, you won't be able to avoid the rear crash because you won't know you need to. If your side mirrors are angled away from your vehicle, you won't be able to use them either to gather this information. You'll end up as another statistic from another crash.
      This is not a personal opinion but rather what is actually taught in driver's education these days. Hope this helps.

       @ZulaDrivingSchool. You've got a point there. However, if you need to see the side of your car with the mirror adjusted to see the blind spot, just tilt your head toward the window. That allows you to see what you described in the video. Or tilt your head toward the center of your for the passenger side mirror. I prefer to see my blind spots not just for lane changing, but to know traffic around me all the time. Seeing the 2 blind spot at all time achieve just that.
