  • Taumarunui - Auckland Transports solution to getting rid of old Maxx passenger train carriages. Come check out the musky, rotting and graffiti covered abandoned AT trains and all their glory. They should be sold off and used as mini houses or similar, instead of sitting here for years on end with no use. Cheers for watching VS Media 💪

The SA coaches were British Rail Mark 2 coaches, a design first built in 1964 and production ended in 1975. This means the youngest coaches are now nearly 50 years old and the oldest ones are 60 years old already! The SA coaches specifically used some of the newer Mk2s so at least they're not 60 years old, but they're getting pretty close.

These Ex-BR Mark II coaches ex Auckland suburban trains should have been rebuilt as long-distance coaches to re-start provincial services across New Zealand, instead they have been left to rot! Typical KiwiRail! What a waste of a good resource.

I spoke to a mechanic who serviced the SA sets at westfield in their prime and said that they were sagging in the middle due to weight, they wouldn't of been able to last.

I'm pretty sure most of these were supposed to be sold to India as part of their plan when they got new ones but I guess the deal fell through.

They refit a bunch of these carriages for Te Huia and the Capital Connection, might not be a bad idea to refit these for other regional services. Could restore passenger rail to Napier or to the Waikato!

Some of the ones in better condition there got bought by Glenbrook Vintage Railway (Pukekohe) for use as future mainline charter rail trip carriages and will be moved north again. Others going to scrap cos they had worse quality bogies (suspension) so no use restoring them for future use as active railway stock. Even the refurbed Capital Connex carriages were only certified for 5 years more of running by NZTA-Waka Kotahi because they are almost life-expired. basically they're just being used as a filler until the new tri-mode trains come into service in 2028-29. Contrary to what the bro says in the video, they aren't new. Yes they were fully refurbed after arriving in NZ, but that was basically almost 20 years ago.

@@yasukiwi I spoke to a mechanic who serviced the SA sets at westfield in their prime and said that they were sagging in the middle due to weight, they wouldn't of been able to last. They are super old and heavily modified. Imagine a bus chassis from the 1950s with a 2020 body, wouldn't last.

It would be great to get all these AT trains restored, rebuilt, and brought back into public service.

We built these in Dunedin from wagons that used to run 160km/h on the east Anglia line in England. They rotted in Auckland for a decade or 2 first tho

I was wondering if there were any old diesel trains stored in Taumarunui as well, since they have the old AT electric trains transferred there
